Preserve non-TRACK_ENDED statuses for listing entries
On drafts 18 and 19, a resumed listed subscription can end with SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED (0x3) when its filter completes. read_publish_done treats that status as a successful result, and this conversion consequently passes Ok(()) to entry_ended, silently removing a track that may still be live. Classify the original PUBLISH_DONE with listing_end here so only TRACK_ENDED removes the entry and other clean subscription endings fail/retry the listing.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Agreed, fixed in 6882b09: read_publish_done now returns the PUBLISH_DONE, and a resumed entry is classified with listing_end, so SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED (drafts 18-19) fails the listing instead of removing the track. Regression test: a_resumed_track_ending_otherwise_fails_the_listing (fails without the fix).

Preserve descending order for skipped-track subscriptions
When a peer answers SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS with PUBLISH_SKIPPED, this paused SUBSCRIBE commits to ascending delivery before any reader exists. GROUP_ORDER cannot be changed by the later REQUEST_UPDATE, so an ordinary reader whose model subscription defaults to descending is permanently served oldest-first. With retained backlog or congestion, stale groups can therefore occupy transmission ahead of the live edge, unlike both the normal SUBSCRIBE path and the held-PUBLISH path; initialize this subscription with the model's descending default instead.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, fixed in 77f7962: the paused SUBSCRIBE for a skipped track now takes the model's default order (track::Order::default()), as the plain SUBSCRIBE path does, and the skipped-track test asserts it.

Fail the listing when a listed PUBLISH is unsupported
When a peer lists a track whose mandatory properties cannot be accepted, this branch rejects only that PUBLISH and leaves the covering SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS established. The responder treats the rejection as terminal for that track and sends no replacement PUBLISH_SKIPPED, so listing consumers silently receive an incomplete track set. Fail the covering listing here, as the slot-exhaustion and failed paused-SUBSCRIBE paths already do. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Agreed, fixed in 5b42255: a listed PUBLISH whose properties we cannot take now fails the covering listing (and is still refused), matching the refused paused SUBSCRIBE path. The peer sends nothing else for that track, so a standing listing would be silently short. Test: an_unsupported_publish_fails_the_listing (fails without the fix).

Propagate paused PUBLISH_DONE to the cached track
After a reader leaves, subscribe_once returns an Idle producer to linger while this watcher owns the paused upstream subscription. If the peer then sends PUBLISH_DONE, this path only removes or fails the listing entry and removes TrackState; it never finishes or aborts that lingering producer. A caller retaining the track handle can therefore keep a stale open track indefinitely or trigger a new subscription instead of observing the publisher's clean end/error. The paused handoff needs to retain a way to terminate the cached track when the upstream ends. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Partly agreed, fixed in 5b42255: the paused hand-off now carries the copy a reader left lingering, and an error end of the paused upstream (an error PUBLISH_DONE, a reset, or a FIN without PUBLISH_DONE) aborts it, as the forwarding path does. Test: a_paused_track_failing_aborts_its_lingering_copy (fails without the fix).
Not finishing it on TRACK_ENDED: the paused copy saw none of the groups published since the pause, and PUBLISH_DONE carries no final location, so finish() would end the track at its stale edge and truncate it for anyone reading. It stays idle instead, and a returning reader's SUBSCRIBE learns the real end, exactly as for a plain copy whose subscription was cancelled.

Decode update replies before accepting them
Whenever a pause has an owed reply, this accepts any body labeled REQUEST_OK or REQUEST_ERROR without decoding it; the identical shortcut appears in read_answer while resuming. Since Framed decodes the body only as opaque length-delimited bytes, a peer can send a truncated body, illegal parameters, or trailing bytes and have it counted as a valid answer instead of closing the session for malformed input. Decode the appropriate message with body.message(...) before decrementing owed. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Agreed, fixed in 5b42255: both the watcher and read_answer decode an owed REQUEST_OK / REQUEST_ERROR with body.message (which also rejects trailing bytes) before counting it, so a malformed one closes the session. Test: a_malformed_pause_answer_closes_the_session (fails without the fix).

| - **`SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS` lists, it never pushes.** In Rust, on draft 18 and later, it lists every track of every broadcast under its prefix, later ones included. With `FORWARD=0`, each track gets a paused `PUBLISH` carrying its Track Properties, and an error `PUBLISH_DONE` once the track is no longer listed, never `TRACK_ENDED`, since the track may go on elsewhere. A `REQUEST_UPDATE` with `FORWARD=1` resumes one, served from the cache like a `SUBSCRIBE` with the update's filter and answered with `LARGEST_OBJECT`; `FORWARD=0` pauses it again. Each paused `PUBLISH` holds a subscription slot, and past the cap a track gets `PUBLISH_SKIPPED` (`PUBLISH_BLOCKED` on draft 18) instead. A listing that omits `FORWARD` or sets it to 1 asks for every track's objects: from draft 19 each track gets `PUBLISH_SKIPPED`, and the subscriber `SUBSCRIBE`s to what it wants; draft 18 has no such skip, so the request is refused with `NOT_SUPPORTED`. A prefix overlapping another listing gets `PREFIX_OVERLAP`, a `TRACK_PROPERTY_FILTER` gets `NOT_SUPPORTED`, and a `REQUEST_UPDATE` on the listing itself ends it. On draft 18, a `SUBSCRIBE` to a track we `PUBLISH`ed gets `DUPLICATE_SUBSCRIPTION`. Cancelling the listing stops new `PUBLISH`es, while those sent live on. A broadcast is listed only while our publish grant covers it, from scratch once it does. A Rust relay does not yet send `SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS` upstream, and JavaScript refuses it with `NOT_SUPPORTED`. | ||
| - **Pull.** Subscribers ask. Single-track `PUBLISH` offers are declined, unless they answer our `SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS` (below); announce a namespace and serve the resulting subscriptions. Announcements go out unsolicited, and we also ask for every prefix we may discover. The solicit `SETUP` option makes us wait to be asked. Without it, a draft 16+ peer also gets each match as a `NAMESPACE` on its `SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE` stream, so it hears the namespace twice. We send `PUBLISH` only to answer a `SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS` (below): on drafts 16 and 17 a `SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE` asking only for `PUBLISH` is refused, one asking for both gets only `NAMESPACE`, and any other Subscribe Options value closes the session. | ||

A reader resumes that `PUBLISH` with a `REQUEST_UPDATE` (`FORWARD=1` plus the join's filter, and `FILL_PARAMETERS` from draft 20; a Joining `FETCH` on the `PUBLISH`'s Request ID before), and the last reader leaving pauses it again, so a listed track is never subscribed twice. Only a `PUBLISH_DONE` with `TRACK_ENDED` removes the track; any other status, including the error our own answerer sends once a track is no longer listed, fails every listing the request serves, and the readers ask again. A skipped track is listed through a paused `SUBSCRIBE` once its `SUBSCRIBE_OK` arrives, and a track we already `SUBSCRIBE`d is listed through that `SUBSCRIBE`, its `PUBLISH` refused with `DUPLICATE_SUBSCRIPTION` on draft 18 and `UNINTERESTED` after. One request covers each chain of nested broadcasts: a nested listing reuses the broader one, and a broader one replaces the nested requests once the peer has closed them. Each held track counts against the session's announce cap; past it, the `PUBLISH` is refused with `EXCESSIVE_LOAD` and the listing reset. A Rust answerer refuses `FORWARD=0` on a `SUBSCRIBE`, so pausing a listed track we `SUBSCRIBE`d fails that listing once, which asks again. |

Move per-draft wire accounting out of the concept page
This new paragraph is primarily a per-draft inventory of wire messages, parameters, status codes, request IDs, and refusal codes rather than user-facing guidance. That makes the concept entry point duplicate the protocol implementation and draft reference, increasing the chance that it becomes stale; keep only the behavior users need to choose or use the feature here and move or link the detailed accounting to the adjacent API/draft documentation. Agreed, fixed in 5b42255: the bullet now keeps only what a user needs (on demand, draft 18+, a paused PUBLISH resumed rather than resubscribed, only TRACK_ENDED removes a track). The per-draft accounting lives in the module rustdoc of rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber/tracks.rs and the code beside it. The rest of this section is the page's existing per-draft deviation list, which this PR leaves alone.

…rs, end a failed paused copy - A listed PUBLISH whose properties we cannot take now fails the listing, as a refused paused SUBSCRIBE already did, instead of leaving it silently short a track. - The REQUEST_UPDATE answers a held subscription owes are decoded before they count, so a malformed one closes the session like any other malformed control message. - A paused upstream ending in error aborts the copy a reader left lingering. TRACK_ENDED leaves it idle, since its end lies past groups the paused copy never saw. - Tests prove SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS goes out only for a listing, and that a peer refusing, resetting, or ignoring it leaves a plain SUBSCRIBE working. - The concept page keeps the behavior a user needs; the wire accounting stays in rustdoc. Reject forwarding PUBLISHes for paused listings
On drafts 20 and later, a peer can answer this FORWARD=0 SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS with a PUBLISH carrying FORWARD=1. This branch never inspects msg.forward yet parks the alias and accepts the request, so objects the peer immediately sends are rejected as belonging to a paused alias while the listing still appears healthy. Reject the contradictory PUBLISH and fail the listing instead of silently discarding its data.

Agreed, fixed in 3b354f3: from draft-20 (where PUBLISH_OK has no FORWARD to pause it), a PUBLISH with FORWARD=1 answering our paused listing is refused with NOT_SUPPORTED and the listing fails Unsupported, rather than having its objects refused unseen behind a healthy listing. Through draft-19 our PUBLISH_OK FORWARD=0 still pauses it, so it stays accepted there. Test: a_forwarding_publish_fails_the_listing_from_draft_20 (fails without the fix).

Finish cached tracks when TRACK_ENDED wins the resume race
When a reader returns to a lingering listed copy and TRACK_ENDED arrives before the resume's REQUEST_OK, listing_end returns Ok(()) but this converts it to NotFound; the error arm in subscribe_once then aborts the cached producer. Retained consumers therefore observe an error for a deliberate clean publisher finish, unlike the established-subscription path that calls track.finish(), so preserve the clean completion through this response path.

Agreed that aborting a clean finish is wrong; fixed differently in 3b354f3. track.finish() is not safe here either: the copy was idle, the resume's REQUEST_OK never came, and PUBLISH_DONE carries no final location, so finishing would end the track at the copy's stale edge and truncate it. Instead the copy lingers again, and since its reader is still waiting, it immediately opens a plain SUBSCRIBE, whose answer reports the real end (a clean finish at the right position, or the peer's refusal). That is the same path a returning reader takes on any idle copy. A fresh request (no copy yet) still fails, as before. Test: a_track_ending_before_its_resume_resubscribes (fails without the fix).

…ibe a track that ends mid-resume - From draft-20 a PUBLISH answering our FORWARD=0 SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS with FORWARD=1 has no PUBLISH_OK field to pause it, so it is refused and the listing fails instead of having its objects refused unseen. Through draft-19 PUBLISH_OK still pauses it. - A lingering copy whose track ends with TRACK_ENDED before its resume is answered lingers again, so its waiting reader's SUBSCRIBE learns the real end, rather than aborting a clean finish it cannot place. Fail entries whose pending subscription is abandoned
When a normal SUBSCRIBE is awaiting SUBSCRIBE_OK, serve_publish can select it as the listing entry via subscribed(), while held here remains None because that variable only denotes a resumed listed subscription. If the last reader disappears during this window, this branch skips the pause arm and removes the request without calling entry_ended; the invisible entry remains, and subsequent PUBLISH or PUBLISH_SKIPPED messages are treated as duplicates, so the healthy standing listing permanently omits that track. Fail the entry during this cleanup path.

Abort the cached copy when writing the pause fails
If the request stream errors while writing the FORWARD=0 update after the last reader leaves, this arm removes the subscription and listing entry but drops upstream.copy without aborting it. The caller then returns its other producer handle to linger, so retained consumers see a stale open track rather than the upstream failure; this bypasses the abort that watch performs when an already-paused upstream fails. Abort the cached copy with err before discarding the upstream.

When a peer requests FORWARD=1, or when properties or subscription capacity force tracks to be skipped, this closure inserts every discovered track into both request.skips and skipped while the listing tasks continue polling independently of the request stream's ability to flush. A peer that stops reading can therefore make each session retain state proportional to the entire visible catalog, and concurrent peers multiply that memory; pause enumeration until pending skips are written or otherwise couple this queue to transport backpressure. Re the Codex P1 "Backpressure skipped-track enumeration" (review) on (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Problem
A moq-lite TRACKS listing (
broadcast::Consumer::tracks) of a broadcast served by a moq-transport peer listed nothing: the Rust subscriber never sent SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS. The archive epic needs it to discover an IETF peer's tracks. Quest:quest/m1/archive/subscribe-tracks-outbound.md(deleted here as complete). The inbound half landed in #6167.Approach
broadcast::Consumer::tracks, directly or through a downstream listing a relay forwards), never on session setup, announce, or subscribe. A peer that refuses it fails only that listing; one that resets it fails only that listing; one that never answers leaves that listing synced and empty. None of these touches the session, its other subscriptions, or the plain SUBSCRIBE path. (A FIN with no answer is malformed input and closes the session, as for every other request; a peer that closes the session on an unknown message type is outside our control, which is why we never send it unasked.)Lister, like the lite subscriber. While anyone lists it, the session sends SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS with FORWARD=0 (draft 18+; earlier drafts refuse the listing asUnsupportedrather than answer empty), syncs at once, and lists tracks as live adds.run_subscribetakes the held subscription instead of opening a SUBSCRIBE: REQUEST_UPDATE FORWARD=1 with the join filter (plus FILL_PARAMETERS from draft-20, a Joining FETCH on the PUBLISH's Request ID before), and REQUEST_UPDATE FORWARD=0 when the last reader leaves, handing it back to a watcher. Its alias stays bound while paused: newAlias::Pausedrefuses stray groups (non-conforming FORWARD=0),Alias::Resumingmakes groups wait on the resume's answer as they wait on SUBSCRIBE_OK.announcesslot; past the cap the PUBLISH gets EXCESSIVE_LOAD and the listing resets, as lite does.Impact
Consumer::tracksnow lists over moq-transport 18+ and errorsUnsupportedon 14-17 instead of an empty synced listing.drafts/change.doc/concept/standard.md(behavior only; the per-draft accounting is in theietf/subscriber/tracks.rsrustdoc), reconciled with moq-dev/moq#6336: both implementations answer SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS, and only Rust sends it, for a listing. Quests: two m1 follow-ups below.Decisions
Which PUBLISH_DONE status removes a listed track: TRACK_ENDED only. Decided by the maintainer on 2026-10-22, superseding an earlier "NOT_FOUND / DOES_NOT_EXIST counts as removal": no such PUBLISH_DONE code exists (our answerer's unlisted
Error::NotFoundgoes out as INTERNAL_ERROR), and treating INTERNAL_ERROR as removal would let any peer's generic failure remove a track silently, against "fail loud".This PR lands (b)'s subscriber half. The answerer half (TRACK_ENDED for a finished track) is split off as A listing says whether a removed track finished: the answerer reads the listing through an origin front, where the instance that left is already gone, and
TracksEvent::Removedcarries only the name, so telling a finished track apart needs a public API change and a lite-07 TRACKS_REMOVE field for relay chains. Until then a Rust-to-Rust IETF unlist, finished or not, resets the listing once and readers list again (covered byan_unlisted_track_fails_the_listing).Research behind it. (i) PUBLISH_DONE codes in drafts 18-22: INTERNAL_ERROR 0x0, UNAUTHORIZED 0x1, TRACK_ENDED 0x2 ("the track is no longer being published"), SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED 0x3 (drafts 18-19 only, the end of a filter; removed in draft-20), GOING_AWAY 0x4, TOO_FAR_BEHIND 0x5, EXPIRED 0x6, UPDATE_FAILED 0x8, EXCESSIVE_LOAD 0x9, MALFORMED_TRACK 0x12, and greasing
0x7f * N + 0x9D. No DOES_NOT_EXIST, and no non-generic code means "no longer listed". Draft-22 section 13: an unknown PUBLISH_DONE code MUST be treated as INTERNAL_ERROR. (ii) Our answerer sends an error, never TRACK_ENDED, for an unlisted track because a track also leaves the listing when its route is withdrawn or its producer dropped, and it ends a forwarding PUBLISH on unlist too: TRACK_ENDED there would be taken as the track's clean end (PublishDone::end->track.finish()), caching a track that may continue elsewhere as finished.Pausing a SUBSCRIBE against a Rust answerer. Accepted as a follow-up. Main already planned it as Pause an IETF SUBSCRIBE (quest(m1): plan FETCH_OK whole-group and IETF SUBSCRIBE pause #6272), so this PR reuses that quest instead of adding a duplicate, and ranks it in m1 right after the archive epic since a clean Rust-to-Rust listing needs it.
Alternatives
Accepting a PUBLISH beside an existing SUBSCRIBE (allowed from draft-19) instead of refusing it: simpler, but the quest decided the SUBSCRIBE is the entry, and draft-18 forbids two. Widening a request in place with REQUEST_UPDATE and one request per session at the common ancestor were rejected by the quest.
Follow-ups
quest/m1/ietf-subscribe-pause.md(from quest(m1): plan FETCH_OK whole-group and IETF SUBSCRIBE pause #6272, re-ranked here): the IETF answerer pauses a SUBSCRIBE (Forward=0 on SUBSCRIBE and REQUEST_UPDATE).quest/m1/listing-end-reason.md(added here): a listing removal says whether the track finished, so the answerer sends TRACK_ENDED for it and a Rust-to-Rust listing removes it without a reset. Public API and lite-07 wire, shape to settle with the maintainer.Checks
