Quest: m1/recovery-verdicts

Problem

A resumed group's recovery read every error that was not Old, Evicted, or an app code (plus TooFarBehind in JS) as "no verdict" and asked a route for a new copy. An error that repeats on every copy therefore looped: a fetched group whose copy fails with MalformedTrack asked the same route again forever (the JS regression test counts 27,208 fetches in 30 s on main), and a local GroupTooLarge or WrongSize did the same with no peer involved.

The Rust route_failed and JS ROUTE_FAILURES lists also disagreed, and adding the JS given-up guard to Rust hung partial_group (moq-dev/moq#6143, decision 5).

Approach

One classification, mirrored. Rust route_failed and JS routeFailed now agree. A failure is a route failing to deliver only when it is:

  • a session or transport failure: Rust Transport, IdleTimeout, Session(_), SessionClosed, GoingAway, GoawayTimeout, Dropped, Closed, Cancel; JS a Session error or one whose source is "session"; or
  • one of the stream codes Internal, Cancel, SessionClosed, GoingAway, ControlTimeout. Rust gains Internal, Cancel, and ControlTimeout from JS.

Everything else judges the group (a verdict). JS no longer reads every non-stream error as a route failure, so a parse error is a verdict there, as it already was in Rust. That also removes the Incompatible special case.

Recovery.

  • A delivery failure, or a failure on a copy whose route failed, asks a route again, as before.
  • Rust also treats local Lagged as delivery: the copy never held the frame, and a fetch from that frame either holds it or is refused.
  • A verdict ends the group unless a newer route serves. In that case it moves there, never back to the route that gave it. Both languages now refuse to fetch a verdict's group from the same generation, including after the front concludes, which used to refetch.
  • A hostile route is bounded by the classification: one bad answer per route change, with no retry count.
  • TooFarBehind is settled as a verdict on both sides.
  • Fetches keep moq-dev/moq#6143 decision 4: Old and Evicted judge a subscription's delivery, not a fetch, so a fetched group still asks its route again for them.

The partial_group hang, at its cause. The IETF control-stream adapter mapped every real stream error to Error::Closed, which transport_error turns into Error::Transport("closed"). A moq-transport peer's reset (here OLD) read as a lost connection, so with aligned lists the reader waited for a route that never came. The adapter's streams now report a StreamFailure that carries the transport's session and stream codes, so the negotiated registry decodes them. Virtual streams are unchanged.

Impact

  • Public API: none. routeFailed is exported from the non-public resume.ts module for tests (@internal). StreamFailure lives in the private ietf::adapter module.
  • Wire: none. moq-transport sessions now read a peer's stream reset code instead of Transport("closed").
  • Behavior: a resumed or fetched group whose copy fails with a content error (WrongSize, GroupTooLarge, MalformedTrack, Unauthorized, NotFound, an unknown code, ...) ends once with that error instead of refetching. A peer's Internal, Cancel, or ControlTimeout reset now continues a Rust group from the next route, as JS already did.

Tests

Model tests in Rust (rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs) and JS (js/net/src/resume.test.ts), with no wall clock:

  • only_delivery_codes_are_a_route_failing / "only delivery codes are a route failing": the same table of every code below 0x40, app codes, and an unknown code, in both languages.
  • a_verdict_is_never_asked_of_its_own_route / "a verdict ends a read/fetched group once, never asking its own route again". The JS test uses a hostile route that answers every fetch with a copy that fails the same way.
  • a_verdict_every_route_repeats_ends_the_group_once / the JS mirror: a verdict moves once to the newer route and ends when that copy repeats it.
  • a_delivery_failure_continues_from_the_next_route: the codes Rust newly reads as delivery still recover.

The table and verdict tests fail on main in both languages. The Rust delivery test pins behavior that main already had.

Checks

  • just check origin/main: js, rs (fmt, doc, clippy, shear, sort), and quest pass. The flake module fails building the unchanged GitHub runner image (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map), an environment limit moq-dev/moq#6224 also hit.
  • cargo test -p moq-net: 2,419 lib and 448 integration tests pass, including partial_group, which hangs with the aligned lists unless the adapter fix is in.
  • cargo nextest run -p moq-net -p moq-relay -p moq-tokio: 3,857 of 3,859 pass. The two failures, drain::a_session_ignoring_the_goaway_is_closed_at_the_deadline and shutdown_signal::an_embedder_owns_the_signals, fail identically with this PR's Rust files reverted to main, so they predate it.
  • bun test src in js/net passes, the 72 resume tests included.
  • Not run: just test interop. It exercises media happy paths, not reset codes.
  • rejoin::taken_over_quiet_catalog_survives_cache_expiry failed once (moq-transport-19) while Lagged was briefly a verdict. After Lagged went back to delivery, it passed 6 of 6 reruns and the full suite.

Decisions

Accepted by the maintainer as implemented:

  1. A verdict moves to a newer route. A content error from one route may move once to the route serving now (per route change), and never asks the route that gave it again. This keeps the recovery main already had for Old, Evicted, and app codes; the bound is the route change, which a bad route cannot cause by serving data.
  2. Old and Evicted on a fetch keep re-asking. A fetched group still asks its own route again for these, per moq-dev/moq#6143 decision 4. A local fetch answered from a subscription's arriving group sees the peer's Stream(Old) reset, so source cannot tell the cases apart without a new marker.
  3. JS counts only session/transport errors among non-stream errors. Only a Session error or a source: "session" transport error is a route failure, mirroring Rust. A decode Error, UnexpectedEnd, TimeoutError, or NoStreamCredit now judges the group or track (also track-level #end, track info, and fetch refusals). A misclassified delivery error ends one group, while a misclassified verdict loops.
  4. Rust Lagged stays a delivery error. A copy that never held the frame lags only itself, and a fetch from that frame either holds it or is refused with NotFound. head_fetch needs this. JS TooFarBehind is a reader evicted under memory and stays a verdict.

Follow-ups

  • The IETF adapter's session-level calls (poll_accept_*, poll_open_uni, datagrams, Session::poll_closed) still map every error to Closed, losing a session close code. This is the same bug as the stream fix here, at session scope.
  • drain::a_session_ignoring_the_goaway_is_closed_at_the_deadline and shutdown_signal::an_embedder_owns_the_signals fail on main locally. They may relate to moq-dev/moq#6222.

Group recovery read every error that was not Old, Evicted, or an app code as
no verdict and asked a route again, so an error that repeats on every copy
looped. Now only a delivery failure (the route or session went away, or a
delivery stream code) asks a route again; any other error ends the group,
moving at most to a newer route and never back to the one that gave it.

Rust `route_failed` and JS `routeFailed` now classify the same list: Internal,
Cancel, SessionClosed, GoingAway, and ControlTimeout among stream codes, plus a
session or transport failure. JS no longer reads every non-stream error as a
route failure, so a parse error is a verdict as in Rust.

Aligning the lists hung `partial_group` because the IETF adapter mapped every
real stream error to `Closed`, so a peer's reset read as a lost connection.
The adapter now keeps the transport's codes for the negotiated registry.

Outcome: the quest is implemented. Rust and JS classify recovery errors from one mirrored list, a verdict never re-asks the route that gave it, and the partial_group hang is fixed at its cause: the IETF adapter was dropping real-stream reset codes.

This stays a draft until the maintainer confirms the four decisions in the description. Each has a recommendation, and the branch implements that recommendation.

The maintainer accepted all four decisions as implemented; the PR body now records them:

  1. A verdict may move once to a newer route, never back to the route that gave it.
  2. A fetched group keeps re-asking its route on Old/Evicted, per moq-dev/moq#6143 decision 4.
  3. JS counts only session/transport errors among non-stream errors as route failures.
  4. Rust Lagged stays a delivery error.

Walkthrough

The Rust adapter now preserves real transport errors in wrapped error types. JavaScript and Rust update route-failure classification and recovery decisions for failed groups. New tests cover classification, repeated verdicts, and recovery across routes. The m1 quest list and related plan no longer include the recovery-verdicts document.

Merging. Summary:

  • Review: Codex reviewed head 2b3908d with no findings (thumbs-up). CodeRabbit was rate-limited and is not required.
  • Decisions: all four accepted by the maintainer as implemented and recorded in the description (verdict moves once to a newer route, Old/Evicted on a fetch keep re-asking, JS counts only session/transport errors among non-stream errors, Rust Lagged stays delivery).
  • Main: the branch merges cleanly. I verified a local merge with current main (which touched resume.ts, adapter.rs, and error.rs independently): cargo test -p moq-net passes (2,447 lib and 449 integration), bun test src in js/net passes (2,497), and just check origin/main passes js, rs, and quest. Only the flake module fails, on the runner image build environment limit already noted.
  • Follow-ups (from the description): carry the session-level close code through the IETF adapter's poll_accept_*/poll_open_uni/datagram/poll_closed paths, and look into the drain/shutdown_signal test failures on main.

Main's #5762 added RecvError to keep a real receive stream's error
through the adapter, while this branch added StreamFailure for both
directions. Unify them as one generic AdapterError that keeps the
transport error typed for send and receive, and forwards close_kind.

Comment thread js/net/src/resume.ts
When an IETF subscriber has no request ID left because its session went
away, it rejected the subscription with a plain Error. routeFailed() read
that as a verdict on the content, so a resumed track ended instead of
waiting for the next route. Reject with StreamCode.SessionClosed, as the
lite subscriber does when its session closes.

Re-queueing after the merge queue dropped this for a main conflict:

  • Merged origin/main (a312e90). Main's fix(net): drain received group tails after session close #5762 added RecvError<E> to the IETF adapter for the receive side; this PR had StreamFailure for send and receive. I replaced both with one generic AdapterError<E>, private to moq-net. It keeps the transport error typed on both sides and passes close_kind, session_error and stream_error through. In the quest README, both finished quests' lines are dropped.
  • Fixed CodeRabbit's finding (33aa5d9). IetfSubscriber.#closedSession now rejects with StreamCode.SessionClosed, as the lite subscriber does, so a resumed track moves to the next route instead of ending. A regression test covers it and fails without the fix. The Rust IETF subscriber has no equivalent gap.
  • moq-net clippy and tests, js/net typecheck and tests, and quest check pass. Codex gave the final head a thumbs-up.

and tracks the newest datagram handed out separately so a declared end is
still checked against it now that `#datagram` is the last one. Renames
`advanceAsync` to `advance` for the new manual clock. Drops the quest
