fix(net): end a resumed track the way a direct one ends - #6136
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A resumed JS subscriber settles closed once its serving copy ends cleanly, leaves the route and lets go of copies with nothing left to read, keeps the first end any copy declared (refusing a different one), resolves largest() undefined at a clean end, and carries a close(abort) to the groups it handed out and any recovery in flight. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
|
Outcome: the quest is implemented. All four behaviors are fixed, and each one has a regression test that fails without the fix. (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Resolve js/net resume conflicts with #6141: the clean end now concludes only once no group the reader lacks may still land on a replaced copy, on every path (group drain, datagram drain, the serving copy closing). A replaced copy's unread group keeps it without delaying closed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe resumed reader now tracks a logical end across copies and coordinates clean completion with unread groups and datagrams. Reads can continue from retained data after a clean close, while conflicting end declarations and aborts return errors. The changes also add regression tests and remove the related quest specification and links. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

Exclude permanently out-of-range datagrams from spent
When a datagram is buffered and the subscriber subsequently raises its group floor past that datagram before the finite copy ends, spent remains false solely because the datagram array is nonempty. Since setGroups cannot lower the floor and recvDatagram would only discard this datagram, a group-only reader never releases the copy, its demand, or its route source unless it explicitly polls the unrelated datagram channel. A peer can therefore pin these resources with one obsolete datagram per reader; check whether any buffered datagram is still within [start, end) rather than checking the raw array length.

Fixed in 847dd75: spent now counts only datagrams inside the copy's cursor, so one below the floor no longer pins the copy. Regression test: a datagram below the group floor does not keep a finite track's copy.

Reject mismatched ends reported after a clean conclusion
If the serving copy ends cleanly while a replaced copy is retained for an unread buffered group, #conclude settles the shell with null before that retained copy necessarily declares its end. When the retained copy later reports a conflicting end, this call cannot replace the already-set clean terminal value and does not close its groups or copies, so the reader continues exposing data from a copy that should have been refused while closed still reports success. The late mismatch must still terminate the retained copy/read path with Incompatible.

… late end A datagram below the group floor no longer keeps a finite track's copy after a clean end, since a read would only discard it. Keep the final copy that backs an open group
When a group has been handed out from replaced copy A and the clean-ending serving copy B holds the completed duplicate, delivered already contains that sequence, so hooks.spent ignores B's buffered group and this branch drops B even though an open Recover still depends on it. If A subsequently stalls, the recovery waits forever on the detached route; if A fails, it surfaces A's route error instead of completing from B. Before dropping the serving copy, retain it when it holds or may still receive a group referenced by this.out, as the replaced-copy path does.

Fixed in b25fdae: after a clean end, the serving copy also stays while it holds or may still get a group in out, through the same check the replaced-copy path uses (now #backs). Regression test: a clean end keeps the serving copy while a group read from a replaced one may continue from it, which failed with the old route's SessionClosed before.

Record a declared end before dropping its copy
When a copy declares its end and the route is swapped in the same turn, a datagram poll can drop the replaced copy before this queued finished() callback runs. The includes check then discards an end that was already declared, so a later copy can report a conflicting end without being rejected. Capture the end synchronously before dropping a copy, or otherwise preserve declarations made before removal.

Release copies when rejecting a mismatched end
When two live copies declare conflicting ends before the logical track concludes, this branch only settles the shell with an error; it does not close the reader, leave the route, or drop its copies. Subsequent group and datagram reads short-circuit on the shell error before reaching #letGo, so an untrusted peer can keep the route source and subscription demand pinned indefinitely unless the application explicitly calls close(). Terminate the reader here as the post-conclusion mismatch branch does.

Retain duplicates for groups handed out before a swap
When a group is handed out while its copy is the only copy, its Recover is not added to out; if the route then swaps and the new serving copy contains the duplicate but ends cleanly before the next frame read, this #backs check cannot see the still-open group and drops the new copy as spent. A later failure of the original copy can no longer resume from the already-buffered duplicate, so retention must also cover groups handed out before the overlap began.

Reject a first end that precedes data from another copy
When a replaced copy has already delivered or buffered a later sequence but has not declared its own end, a serving copy can first declare an end below that sequence and this branch accepts it unconditionally. The reader can consequently return group 5 and later report a clean end at group 3, or silently discard the replaced copy's unread later groups; validate a first declaration against every copy's observed data before binding the logical end.

Fixed in 74550db, a bit wider than the first declaration: before each read, the declared end is checked against every group and datagram any copy holds or the reader handed out. An end below them, or a later group past it on a copy with no end of its own, is refused with Incompatible, as a direct track refuses an end below what it received. Regression tests: an end below a group another copy (handed out|buffered) is refused and a group past the declared end on another copy is refused.

Enforce mid-group ends across every copy
When one copy declares an end such as { group: 2, frame: 1 } and another route's copy has multiple frames in group 2 before declaring its own end, this validation compares only group sequences through finalSequence. The resumed reader can therefore return frame 1 and later frames even though its logical exclusive end forbids them. Validate the declared frame boundary against the end group on every copy and refuse a copy that has already passed it, as a direct track does.

Deferred to a follow-up, by the maintainer's call: a per-reader cap on a resumed JS group at a mid-group logical end, which needs a consumer-level frame cap rather than the shared producer's limitGroup. The wider check of the end against every copy's data also carries into Rust's resume-rust-end quest. This PR merges at 74550db.

…ross a flap back A group or datagram at or past the declared end, handed out or on any copy, now refuses the resumed track, matching the JS reader in #6136. Two tests that finished a replaced copy while another route continued now end it without declaring an end. An in-flight group's recovery treats a route that returned to the copy it reads as no change, adopting the new generation, so an unpolled flap back neither refuses a sparse group nor fetches a dense one from itself. Resolves js/net resume.ts and resume.test.ts against #6251, #6230, #6222 and #6209: keeps main's verdict check and identity-based datagram dedup, and tracks the newest datagram handed out separately so a declared end is still checked against it now that `#datagram` is the last one. Renames `advanceAsync` to `advance` for the new manual clock. Drops the quest links to the finished resume-closed, recovery-verdicts and resume-datagrams quests. Completes
quest/m1/resume-closed.md. A resumed JSTrack.Subscriber(one reading a front's route copies) now ends the way a direct subscriber does.Changes
closedsettles on a clean end. It settles when the serving copy closes cleanly, or when either read channel drains that copy cleanly. It no longer waits for bothgroupsanddatagramsto be polled to EOF. The reader then leaves the route and lets go of each copy (its subscription and the route source) once the copy holds nothing left to read: no unread group, no buffered datagram within its cursor, and no group still read from a copy it replaced that could continue from it. The other channel's backlog stays readable, so a resumedclosed === nullno longer short-circuits reads intrack.ts.closedback, as a direct reader's buffer does.end()andfinished()answer from the first end any copy declared, not just the serving copy's. A later copy declaring a different end is refused withIncompatible: the reader closes, dropping its copies and leaving the route, and its reads fail with it.closedsettles with the refusal unless it already settled cleanly. An end is learned before its copy is let go, so a copy dropped before reporting it still binds later copies. A mid-group end that refines the group boundary it falls just before is accepted, as#endPendingaccepts it on the wire. Replaced copies are bounded at that logical end. Before each read, the end is also checked against every group and datagram any copy holds (its largest counts both) or the reader handed out: an end below them, or a later group past it, is refused the same way, as a direct track refuses an end below what it received.largest()ends at a clean end. It resolvesundefinedonce the serving copy ends cleanly (closed, or its largest reached the declared end), even while the front stays open.
