test(media): pin the fixture to mono again and finish publish-audio-channel-count - #6302
Conversation
|
Outcome: the quest's goal is met on current (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
WalkthroughThe interop media fixture now requests mono audio capture. The browser client records supported long-animation-frame entries. Media measurements defer grading and report available player, fixture, and Linux host diagnostics when grading fails. Codec-rename and coded-size-growth checks use the deferred grading flow. The related channel-count quest entry, document, and link were removed. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to

Make host diagnostics optional when top is unavailable
On Linux environments whose host does not provide top, Bun.spawn throws synchronously here, so every normal measurePlayback aborts before collecting media even though these diagnostics are supposed to be evidence-only. The repository's Nix dev shell does not declare procps, making the test depend on an undeclared host executable; either include it in the shell or catch the spawn failure and omit host diagnostics.

Agreed. Fixed in 149ef99: a failed top spawn now prints one line and skips the host diagnostics instead of failing the window. I kept top out of the dev shell because this evidence is optional and CI runners ship it.

Collect stall diagnostics for transition windows
The diagnostics only wrap assertions reached through measurePlayback, but the rename workflow grades its codec-switch and resize windows through the direct assertMedia calls at lines 789 and 814. If either transition window hits the audio stall this change is intended to explain, the run exits before the later wrapped window and neither explainStalls nor watchHost runs, so the dedicated media-rename CI cell still loses the new evidence. Route those windows through the same collection/diagnostic helper.

Agreed. Fixed in 149ef99: a new observe helper collects a window while watching the host and returns a grade. The codec-rename and coded-size windows run their transition checks first and then grade through the same helper, so a stall in either one prints the same evidence. A local just test media run (rename case included) passes.

Run transition checks inside the diagnostic wrapper
Fresh evidence in the new observe flow is that change.grade() runs only after the codec-specific checks at lines 806-811, with the same ordering repeated for resize. If a starved page never presents the new generation, or presents an old frame afterward, check throws before grade, so explainStalls never runs and the host watcher is not promptly cleaned up. Wrap both the transition assertions and assertMedia in the same diagnostic/finally path so these transition-window failures retain the evidence this change was added to collect.

Agreed. Fixed in 521e42d: grade now takes the window's own transition checks and runs them inside the same try as assertMedia. A missing or stale picture in the rename or resize window now prints the stall evidence, and the host watcher is killed in the same finally.

Avoid CDP-only reads in cross-browser diagnostics
When the nightly Firefox media run in .github/workflows/nightly.yml:388 fails a media window, this call uses inspect, whose implementation creates a CDP session and is explicitly Chromium-only (harness.ts:222-226). The resulting exception is caught around the entire diagnostic block, so neither the Firefox player's empty/available log nor the separately running Chromium fixture's long-frame log is printed. Use an engine-independent read after activation, or isolate each page read so the fixture evidence still survives.

Agreed. Fixed in 521e42d: the diagnostics now read each page with a plain page.evaluate, which works on any engine. That is safe here because the window has already failed, so user activation can no longer skew it. Each page also reports in its own try, so an unreadable Firefox player no longer hides the Chromium fixture's frames. Long animation frames are Chromium-only, so a Firefox player simply reports 0.

Preserve fixture logs when the player cannot be read
When a failed window leaves the player page crashed, closed, or otherwise unreadable, this branch skips the entire per-page loop, so the still-live Chromium fixture's long-frame evidence is also lost despite the comment promising independent reads. Record the window's epoch bounds outside the player page, or otherwise query the fixture independently when the player-origin lookup fails.

Agreed. Fixed in eb265d6: the window's bounds now come from the driver's Date.now() around the collect. The pages' epoch timestamps use the same clock, so no page has to be read to find them. Each page is then queried on its own, and a crashed player no longer drops the fixture's frames.

A failed window now prints each page's long animation frames with the scripts that ran in them, and the host's busiest processes, so a CI cold-start audio-tone flake says whether a page or a starved host stopped the player's main thread. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The explicit downmix no longer costs the player audio: eight interleaved local runs each way played the same share of the tone with no failures from either arm. Also follow the PlayerState -> Sample rename on main. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…thout top The codec-rename and coded-size windows now grade through the same helper as every other window, so a stall there also prints its long animation frames and host processes. A host without `top` loses only that part of the evidence. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A rename window's own transition checks now run inside the same grade as its media assertion, so their failures print the stall evidence too. The evidence reads each page with a plain evaluate, which works on any engine once the window has failed, and one unreadable page no longer hides the other's frames. Playwright puts no timeout on page.evaluate, so a page whose main thread never returns held explainStalls, the host evidence and browser cleanup until the job timed out. Summary
Finishes
/quest/m1/publish-audio-channel-count.md. On currentmain, forcingchannelCount: 1onAudio.Captureno longer costs the player any audio, so the media fixture pins mono again and the quest is deleted.test/interop/clients/js/src/fixture.ts. Every media check now also covers the explicit Web Audio downmix, which is the path a macOS microphone takes.observehelper, including their transition checks. Each page is read independently with a plain evaluate, so this works on any engine, and the window is bounded on the driver's clock. Each read gives up after 2s, so a page whose main thread never returns is reported as blocked instead of hanging the job. A host withouttoponly loses that part of the evidence.quest/m1/README.mdandquest/m1/test-flakes-2/README.md.Evidence
workflow_dispatch, this branchmain, since Oct 18 afternoonresource instrumentation(the player held nothing to release). That check does not depend on the pin.cpp -> jsmatrix cell (38s against a 30s budget). Its media steps passed. The cold-start audio-tone flake has stopped on
main, but no single change is shown to have fixed it. There were no Interop runs between Oct 18 14:18 and Oct 19 06:13, and that window holds many merges, so bisecting from CI history is not possible. The pinned-only stall from #5270 does not reproduce either. So the quest's goal holds empirically, but it was not fixed at an identified cause. If it comes back, the diagnostics above should say why.Decisions
