test(interop): exercise real IETF control sessions - #6306
Conversation
Quest-Claim: b758f0728197d910
Checkpoint draft14 status response routing and real datagram, metadata, request-credit, and GOAWAY fixtures. Draft16 credit and a GOAWAY Bun22 fixture interaction remain under investigation; the broad quest remains active. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Preserve compression fixtures alongside datagram/status modes and in-tree QMux dependencies. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Keep both peers on real QMux sessions, use a replacement-only marker before cutting the old endpoint, and preserve the legacy epoch acceptance gap in the active quest. Keep compression fixture modes from current main. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>

Drafts 14 and 16 carry no publisher epoch, so a redirect cannot prove the replacement serves the same publisher. The GOAWAY lanes now run on every IETF draft: on 14/16 they check that the held reader ends with the original transport and that requesting the path again subscribes through the new URI and reads the final group. The JS QMux peer also accepts Rust's moq-00 draft-14 ALPN for the reverse direction. Retire the control-cases quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe changes add draft-14 track-status response routing and allow deliberate session closure to release a track without declaring its end. They add JavaScript and Rust interop peers for track status, request credit, datagrams, and GOAWAY redirects. The interop runner now plans and executes these cases, and the documentation describes the new coverage. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

Fix resume before enabling the GOAWAY lane
When VERSION is draft 18, 20, or 22, this unconditionally runs the Rust-server/JS-client GOAWAY case even though the current JS teardown closes the held track and the resumed reader rejects the replacement group; the commit's own validation reports these new cells failing. Since .github/workflows/interop.yml runs draft 22 in the release gate and all IETF drafts nightly, the interop command exits nonzero on every such run. Fix the resume regression in this change before enabling the lane rather than landing a permanently red test.

Agreed, fixed in eeda9cc rather than gating the lane. A deliberate local session close ended each received JS track with a clean close, which declares an end past the last group; since moq-dev/moq#6136 the resume reader binds that end across copies, so retiring the drained session refused the replacement's next group. A local close now ends the copy cleanly without declaring an end (hooks.releaseTrack, mirroring the Rust close on a received copy), on lite and IETF. The GOAWAY rows pass on all five drafts in both directions.

A JS session closed locally ended each received track with a clean close, which declares an end past the last group received. Since resumed readers bind any copy's declared end, a GOAWAY handover that retires the drained session refused the replacement's next group as Incompatible. A local close is a dead route, not finished content, as in Rust: end the copy cleanly without declaring an end, on lite and IETF alike. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Abort open groups when releasing a dead route
When a locally closed session has already delivered part of an open group, releaseTrack calls #close(undefined, false). Although that correctly withholds the track end, #close then passes undefined to each cached and sink group, making the partial group close cleanly; Group.Consumer.readFrame() treats that as EOF and only attempts route recovery for an Error. A GOAWAY during group transfer can therefore silently truncate the group instead of continuing it from the replacement route. Release open groups with a route-failure error while keeping the track end undeclared, matching the Rust received-copy close behavior.

Fail an interrupted group during track release.
hooks.releaseTrack closes each open group with no error. A held reader can then treat the incomplete group as cleanly ended instead of recovering its remaining frames from a replacement route. Pass a recoverable session-close error while keeping the track end undeclared.

Gate the control lanes to the drafts their peers support.
The guard [[ "$VERSION" == moq-transport-* ]] also matches pinned odd drafts such as moq-transport-15. The harness accepts any pinned moq-transport version. The VERSIONS note and the README both say so.
The standalone peers treat only drafts 14 and 16 as legacy:
control.tssetslegacyonly forDRAFT_14 || DRAFT_16.server.tsandgoaway.tsuse the same check.goaway.rsandgoaway-client.rsuse the same check.
For a draft-15 pass, control.ts takes the NativeSession path, not the legacy adapter. The GOAWAY peers then expect the epoch-based handover that drafts 18 and later use. Draft 15 does not carry that epoch. Those expectations can therefore fail, and the failure comes from the harness, not from the implementation under test.
Restrict the new lanes to the drafts the peers support. Apply the same condition in plan_pass, so the planned cells match the cells that run.

Problem
Finishes quest/m1/interop-coverage/control.md and removes it.
The IETF matrix now exercises real Rust/JS control sessions instead of relying on codec fixtures alone. Two production bugs surfaced:
Incompatible: track video changed its properties across routes. A deliberate local session close (here, retiring the drained session) ended each received JS track with a clean close, which declares an end past the last group. The resume reader now binds any copy's declared end, so the replacement's next group was refused. A local close is a dead route, not finished content, as Rust already treats it (moq-dev/moq#4663): lite and IETF subscribers now end such a copy cleanly without declaring an end, through an internalhooks.releaseTrack.Approach
The new in-tree lanes cover:
moq-00draft-14 ALPN for the reverse direction.Reuse the existing matrix, SETUP codecs, request adapters and QMux implementation. Each standalone endpoint uses an OS-assigned port. The harness owns launchers and JS children as process groups, including on failure.
Impact
end()stays undefined andfinished()rejects instead of reporting an invented end, matching Rust. The newhooks.releaseTrackis internal, marked pending under quest/m1/public-model/deferred.md besidehooks.endTrack.Alternatives
