Implements quest/m1/subscribe-ranges/dynamic.md, as settled in moq-dev/moq#6123, and deletes the quest.

Summary

track::Dynamic now receives a track::Fill per run of misses instead of one group::Request per group. A miss is a sequence in a reader's window that the cache lacks and the live feed will never deliver: one the arrival ledger accounts for (evicted or skipped), one in a gap whose grace ran out, or one below the feed's declared start. Nothing above the frontier is a miss, so a fill is bounded by construction. A reader judges each sequence once, so an evicted group is a miss only if the reader had not already judged it cached; one evicted after that is skipped (decision 8).

  • Fills. track::Fill carries start() (group and frame), end(), priority(), max_delay(), and order(). The handler calls accept(sequence, info) for groups it has and drop_groups(range) for the rest; next() names the next group still owed in the fill's order. Dropping a fill names what is left dropped while a reader still waits; a fill nobody waits on is withdrawn and records nothing.
  • Misses are judged per cursor (model/track/miss.rs) against the arrival ledger, and readers join the fills that cover them (model/track/fill.rs), so concurrent readers share one fill. A reader joining a fill still queued widens it as it would a subscription: highest priority, loosest delay, earliest frame, and any descending reader makes it newest first.
  • A declared start is no promise. Misses below it are asked early, but a refusal there is final only once the ledger gives up too, or the feed ends, since a late group may still arrive. The feed ends for misses only once the live edge reaches a declared end (TrackState::is_complete, the same test that ends readers), so an end declared ahead of the edge keeps a late group below it.
  • A wide fill costs its runs, not its width. A peer can make a miss billions of groups wide, such as a feed starting far past a reader's floor. A pre-lite-05 route holds a fill for the live feed as one entry waiting on the next group it owes, and each verdict settles every run the feed gave up on by range (ArrivalRead::given_up). A reader whose fill ended unanswered settles the run instead of each sequence. A fill's answers are indexed by run, so a handler refusing a wide fill one group at a time, as a FETCH-capable session does, pays for each refusal rather than every one before it.
  • Subscription::max_delay: Option<Duration>, where None is the publisher's max age alone. Lite carries None as the largest delay the wire allows; IETF FETCH and SUBSCRIBE carry budget().
  • Sessions serve a fill as they served group requests: one FETCH per group, one in flight per fill, newest first for a descending reader. Lite and IETF subscribers, the archive reader, and moq-transcode serve fills.
  • IETF serves fills on main's subscriber. Since moq-dev/moq#6348, a pre-draft-20 joining FETCH and a draft-20 fill are one group, and a joining fill spanning several is refused. That fill is the subscription's own head and is kept as main has it. A track::Fill is served beside it, one group FETCH at a time.
  • A finished IETF copy keeps serving fills. A relay's upstream subscription ending cleanly used to drop its in-flight group FETCHes and stop serving the copy's history. It now lingers like an idle copy, without subscribing again, so a fill in flight as the track ends still completes.
  • moq-c keeps its ABI (moq-dev/moq#6052 has not landed): it splits each fill into per-group requests internally, one at a time.
  • Bindings (moq-ffi, Python, Go, Swift, Kotlin, Dart) expose Fill / requested_fill and a nullable max_delay.
  • Bench. track_fill sweeps readers by miss runs, as the quest asks. It found each run costing more the more ranges a reader held: judging a run's staleness walked every empty range past it. The servable search now leapfrogs the ranges and the cache, so 1024 runs cost about 1.4x per run what 64 do (callgrind instructions), down from about 5x. track_range_serving costs about 4% more instructions per read for the extra lookup.

Public API and wire impact

Breaking; how to migrate follows the list.

  • track::Dynamic::requested_group / poll_requested_group become requested_fill / poll_requested_fill. group::Request and its demand() are gone; new track::Fill.
  • track::Fill::priority() is i8, as every priority is since moq-dev/moq#6142 (MoqFill::priority, Go Fill.Priority() int8, Swift Int8).
  • Subscription::max_delay is Option<Duration>; with_max_delay takes impl Into<Option<Duration>>, so existing callers still compile.
  • moq-ffi: MoqFill, MoqTrackDynamic::requested_fill; MoqGroupRequest and MoqGroupDemand removed; MoqSubscription::max_delay_us nullable (defaults to 0).
  • Go: Subscription.MaxDelay becomes *time.Duration, so a zero-value Subscription now means the publisher's max age alone.
  • moq-c: ABI unchanged. Handlers also get requests for subscription history, and moq_group_request_abort no longer delivers its code (waiting fetches fail as not found).
  • track::Fill::refuse_groups(range, err) (new): refuses groups for the readers waiting now without recording them dropped, so a later reader asks again. moq-transcode uses it for a mid-group fetch (Error::Unsupported) and for failures other than the source answering not found; moq-archive uses it for a store failure. Not mirrored into the bindings, since nothing there consumes it yet.
  • Bindings' max_delay stays as this PR shaped it: unset keeps the default of zero, and an explicit null means the publisher's max age alone, mirroring Rust's Option. This differs from decision 3 of moq-dev/moq#6519, where null was the default of zero; moq-c's max_delay_present = false keeps the default of zero, so C still cannot ask for max age alone.

New in the latest round, per the maintainer's choice to add public per-group demand here: track::Fill::is_wanted(sequence), unwanted(sequence) (async), and poll_unwanted(sequence, waiter), the per-group twins of is_used / unused / poll_unused. Each says whether some reader still waits for that group from the fill, and resolves once every reader took it or narrowed past it, or the whole fill is unused. Once a reader takes an accepted group, the group's own demand() says who reads it; Fill::unused keeps meaning whole-fill demand. Fill::frame_start(sequence) gives the frame each group starts from. Mirrored as MoqFill::is_wanted / unwanted, Go Fill.IsWanted / Unwanted(ctx, sequence), Swift isWanted(sequence:) / unwanted(sequence:), Python is_wanted / unwanted, and the generated Kotlin, Dart, and C++ bindings. moq-c's ABI is unchanged, but a group request every reader narrowed past is now withdrawn: answering it fails as not found. Earlier rounds: GroupFill::poll_closed is crate-private. Fill::next skips a group no reader reads any more. Fill::drop_groups, and dropping a fill, name only what a reader still reads as dropped. A descending reader's disjoint misses queue newest first. A fetch_group of u64::MAX that misses the cache now fails with NotFound at once. Go durations past time.Duration's range, and Kotlin and Dart max delays past 2^63 - 1 microseconds, now saturate instead of reading negative.

Also repoints two quest links to the deleted resume-outage.md (deleted by moq-dev/moq#6183, which broke quest check on main) at that PR.

How to migrate (moved here from each package's MIGRATE.md, which PRs no longer write since moq-dev/moq#6610):

  • moq-net, fills. Replace track::Dynamic::requested_group and poll_requested_group with requested_fill and poll_requested_fill. Each yields a track::Fill running from start() (group and frame) to the exclusive end(); frame_start(sequence) is the frame each group starts from, and it carries priority(), max_delay(), and order(). Call accept(sequence, info) for each group you have (the first starts at start().frame), drop_groups(range) for groups the source no longer has, and refuse_groups(range, err) for groups you can't serve right now. next() names the next group still owed, in the fill's order.
  • moq-net, demand. group::Request and its demand() are removed: watch the fill's is_used() and unused(). A reader narrowing its ranges can leave a single group while the fill stays used: next() skips that group, and is_wanted(sequence), unwanted(sequence), and poll_unwanted(sequence, waiter) say when to stop serving it.
  • moq-net, more fills. A fill also arrives for history that a subscriber's ranges cover below the live feed and the cache lacks, not only for fetch_group. Dropping a fill with groups unanswered names them dropped while a reader still waits (where the live feed won't deliver them). A fill nobody waits on is withdrawn and records nothing.
  • moq-net, Subscription::max_delay is an Option<Duration>, where None leaves the publisher's max age alone to bound delivery. The default stays Some(Duration::ZERO), and with_max_delay takes impl Into<Option<Duration>>, so with_max_delay(delay) still compiles; reads and assignments of the field need the Option. A lite SUBSCRIBE carries None as the largest delay the wire allows.
  • moq-ffi and every wrapper. The dynamic track's requested_group becomes requested_fill and returns a fill (MoqFill in moq-ffi, Fill in the wrappers). It carries start group and frame, end group, priority, max delay, order, next, accept(sequence), drop_groups(start, end), is_used, unused, is_wanted(sequence), and unwanted(sequence), in each language's casing. GroupRequest and GroupDemand (MoqGroupRequest, MoqGroupDemand) are removed: serve each group next() names. A refusal carries no application code, and drop_groups fails the waiting fetches as not found. Iterating a dynamic track yields fills in Python, Swift, and Go (All); Kotlin's requestedGroups() is requestedFills(). Regenerate go/ffi and dart/moq_ffi for the changed types and checksums.
  • Subscription max delay in the bindings. An explicit null now means the publisher's max age alone, and leaving it unset still means zero (skip a superseded group at once). This applies to moq-ffi MoqSubscription.max_delay_us (Option<u64>, default Some(0)), cpp/moq std::optional<uint64_t> (default 0), Python Subscription.max_delay (default timedelta(0)), Kotlin and Dart maxDelayUs / maxDelay, and Swift maxDelayUs. In Go, Subscription.MaxDelay is a *time.Duration whose nil means max age alone, so a zero-value Subscription asks for that: point MaxDelay at a zero duration to keep skipping at once.
  • moq-c. The ABI is unchanged. A dynamic handler also gets group requests for subscription history, one group at a time, and the next comes once the previous is accepted, aborted, or freed. moq_group_request_abort no longer delivers its error code, so the waiting fetches fail as not found. A request whose group every subscriber narrowed past is withdrawn, and answering it then fails as not found.

Wire: no new messages or fields, so no draft change. A lite SUBSCRIBE with max_delay: None sends MAX_SAFE_DELAY_MS.

Decisions

Settled by the maintainer (2026-10-21): every recommendation below is accepted.

  1. ✅ START no longer records drops. The quest says a relay records the span a SUBSCRIBE_START skipped past its requested floor as dropped. Doing so broke late-below-start delivery (late_lower_group, received_rewind integration tests), since a group below the start may still arrive. Recommendation: keep it removed; the ledger and the held refusal below give the same "never fetch what upstream gave up" result without losing late groups.
  2. ✅ A refusal below the start is held until the ledger gives up or the feed ends, rather than final at once. Recommendation: keep, for the same reason.
  3. ✅ Go Subscription.MaxDelay is a pointer, so a zero-value Subscription now means max-age alone instead of live edge only. Recommendation: keep; the alternative is a separate HasMaxDelay flag.
  4. ✅ Refusals carry no application error code. Fill::drop_groups fails waiting fetches with NotFound; moq-c's abort code and the ffi/Python reject code are dropped. Recommendation: keep; fetch-as-a-range removes per-group fetches anyway.
  5. ✅ A fill names positions only, with no time anchor. The archive consumer quest notes that a Time(pts) end the cache can't resolve never reaches the handler. Recommendation: defer to that quest.
  6. ✅ Fill::next is public, so handlers can serve owed groups in the fill's order without tracking answers. Recommendation: keep.
  7. ✅ A finished IETF copy lingers for fills (IDLE_LINGER after its last holder leaves) instead of releasing at once. Recommendation: keep; otherwise a fill in flight as the track ends loses its group, which ts_passthrough_crosses_a_relay_through_a_flagged_jump caught once fills became serial.
  8. ✅ An evicted group is a miss only if the reader had not judged it cached (Codex, settled 2026-10-21). A reader judges each sequence once, so one evicted after it was judged, before the reader took it, is skipped. Judging again on eviction would refill a group an arrival-order reader already took, and refilling under pool pressure can thrash. Chosen: land as is, and refill these in Refill evicted groups, with per-reader eviction tracking and a thrash guard. Not a regression: on main, readers ask no fills at all.

Taken while iterating on review, as recommended (no maintainer input needed):
9. A held pre-lite-05 fill waits on one group at a time, settling given-up runs on each verdict, rather than a cap on how many groups it expands. Groups of one fill in a different ledger gap than the one it waits on settle when that group does, at most a grace later.
10. The track_fill bench lands here, since the quest (updated on main on 2026-10-21) asks for it and this PR deletes the quest.
11. The moq-mux container consumer still ignores explicit drops under an unbounded budget (CodeRabbit). It predates this PR with Duration::MAX, and the fix needs track::Subscriber::poll_drop public: a follow-up.
12. A fetch of group u64::MAX fails with NotFound when uncached (Codex). A fill's end is exclusive, so no fill can name that group, and the fetch used to park until every handler left. Only a local write can hold it.
13. js/net keeps a numeric maxDelay for now (Codex). Mirroring None there touches about 80 sites across aggregation, the ledger, resume, and both wires, so it moves to JS ranges, which already mirrors requested_fill.
14. Misses fold on the subscription's grace, read when judged, not on the ledger's stored grace. The stored grace stays at its 1s default until a gap folds, so a reader woke a second after an arrival. Main's a_parked_reader_wakes_when_the_tail_grace_passes caught it once merged. That test now expects one wake when the hole below the arrival folds, which is when it becomes a miss, and no other wake before the grace.
15. Bindings saturate a peer's max delay (Codex). Go's fromMicros saturates at the longest time.Duration for every duration it lifts, rather than wrapping past 292 years to a negative one. Kotlin's and Dart's fill and subscription maxDelay views saturate at 2^63 - 1 microseconds, where u64::MAX (an IETF Max Age up to 2^62 ms) read back negative.
16. A narrowed reader leaves the rest of its fill (Codex). Each fill counts how many joins still read each sequence, and a reader narrowing its ranges releases what it dropped. Fill::next walks only what some reader still reads, so a relay stops FETCHing groups nobody wants, and drop_groups or dropping the fill names only those as dropped. A group fetch in flight is cancelled once no reader reads its group, and that sequence stops routing to the fill, so a later reader asks afresh instead of joining a cancelled fetch. Dropping and re-asking the join instead would cancel every in-flight group and requeue the rest.
18. A descending reader asks newest run first (Codex): its disjoint misses queue in its order. The fill queue stays FIFO across readers.
19. A held feed fetch replaces an abandoned one under the limit (Codex). Moving the pre-lite-05 limit into push had counted the attempt a replacement takes over, so a track at its limit refused the replacement. hold releases it, and at the limit every held fill nobody waits on, before counting. A held fill that still owes other groups moves on rather than being dropped. Its per-group check stays whole-fill: waking every held fetch on every fill change would cost what a_feed_arrival_polls_only_its_group guards, and a held fetch costs no network while it waits.
17. cpp/moq gets its own MIGRATE.md entry (Codex): the generated C++ API renames requested_group to requested_fill, removes GroupRequest/GroupDemand, and makes Subscription::max_delay_us optional.
20. ✅ Public per-group demand on Fill (maintainer, 2026-10-22). Fill::is_wanted / unwanted / poll_unwanted take a sequence; Fill::unused stays whole-fill. moq-transcode's spawn_fill races its source fetch against unwanted(sequence) and checks is_wanted before accepting, so a group every reader narrowed past releases its concurrency permit at once. The archive reader does the same before accepting a media or timeline group. An accepted group keeps growing for whoever holds it. moq-c withdraws the narrowed-past request and hands out the next.
21. A SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED copy does not linger (CodeRabbit). Only TRACK_ENDED marks the IETF copy finished, so after SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED a later reader subscribes afresh, as on main.
22. Per-fill FETCH work stays uncapped (CodeRabbit, declined). A fill is served one FETCH at a time, each waiting on the peer's answer, so its cost is paced by the peer and holds no state that grows with the range; a cap would only be a runtime refusal.

23. A wide fill forgets refusals its readers took (Codex). A reader releases each refusal it takes, and a run no join reads any more leaves the fill's answers, so a fill refused group by group with differing errors holds what its readers have yet to take rather than one entry per refusal. Accepts stay held while their group may still be arriving.
24. The generated Go and Dart FFI packages get MIGRATE.md entries (Codex) for requested_fill / MoqFill, and their signed-priority entries name MoqFill.
25. A descending reader's split miss queues newest first (Codex): fragments around an in-flight fill queue in the reader's order.
26. Fill::frame_start(sequence) (CodeRabbit): one public rule for the frame each group starts from, replacing copies in moq-archive, moq-c, and moq-transcode. Rust-only; the bindings keep start_frame.
27. A reader forgets misses behind its window (Codex, in part): judge clips what the reader gave up and had refused to the span it judges, as it already clipped what it judged. A reader whose floor never moves still keeps one entry per given-up gap, like the track's own drops on main: see Follow-ups.
28. A filled group is wanted until taken (Codex, two rounds). A reader's join holds each group the fill accepted until the reader takes it from the cache, then the group's own consumer keeps it. Before, a join answered in full let go at once, so a source could stop writing a group just before its reader picked it up. Narrowing releases what a join holds outside the new window, filled groups included, so Fill::unwanted fires for them.
29. A time start before the cache asks no older fills (Codex): such a start reads from group 0 as on main, but its misses start at the oldest group held when it resolved. Which older groups it reaches is unknown until they start, so asking from 0 backfilled history before the anchor on a cold relay. Other ranges of the same subscription still ask for their own misses. Exact time-anchored backfill is a follow-up.
30. Fill sessions watch each accepted group's own readers (Codex). After accepting a group, the lite and IETF fill sessions stop when nobody reads that group, not when nobody reads the whole fill. A stalled group every reader narrowed past no longer holds up the fill's later groups. Once the fill ends its per-group demand goes with it, so the session then falls back to the fill's readers.
31. An accepted transcode keeps going (Codex, declined). Racing moq-transcode's post-accept phase against fill.unwanted(sequence) alone would cut groups their readers already took. A correct cut also needs the output group unused, and an atomic abort-if-unused, which stays crate-private (quest/m1/public-model/answer.md). Decision 20 already settled that an accepted group keeps growing for whoever holds it.
32. A fill starts at its own range's frame (Codex). A reader with disjoint ranges asked each fill from the lowest start among them, so a miss in a later range starting mid-group asked frame 0. Each run's first group now takes its frame from the reader's resolved window, and a run splits at every group a range starts inside past frame 0, since adjacent ranges coalesce into one run (a_fill_starts_at_its_own_ranges_frame, an_adjacent_range_starting_mid_group_heads_its_own_fill).
33. The archive timeline refuses a missing group singly (Codex, declined, thread). No wide fill reaches it: the timeline declares no start, an arrival gap folds only under the widest reader's budget, when that reader already gives it up as stale, and every group the timeline produced stays servable. A paused-clock attempt saw only single-group fills.
34. ✅ A reader gives up a stalled fill once it is stale (Codex, maintainer chose the fix here, thread). Every probe re-judges what a fill still owes the reader against the reader's drift budget, parked on when each owed run goes stale, and gives up the stale part, so an ordered reader no longer waits out a stalled handler past its max_delay (a_stalled_fill_goes_stale_under_the_readers_budget).
35. ✅ Each stretch of a stalled fill goes stale on its own (Codex, maintainer chose the fix here, thread). Groups arrive out of order, so one owed run can hold both fresh and stale sequences. The reader walks the groups cached inside each owed run and judges each stretch between them by its shared successor. It gives up only the stale stretches and leaves the arrived groups to the cache (a_late_fresh_group_keeps_its_stretch_of_a_stalled_fill).
36. ✅ An ordered reader leaves a filled group it takes (Codex, maintainer chose the fix here, thread). The ordered path now releases a delivered filled group when it hands the group out, as the arrival path does. Before, the release waited for the next probe, so a reader that dropped the group without reading on kept holding its fill's source (an_ordered_reader_leaves_a_filled_group_it_takes).
37. ✅ An aborted cached group stays owed to its fill (Codex, thread). Retiring the misses that arrived live skips an aborted slot, as judging and resolving already do, so the fill asked to replace a fetched group that aborted after its readers left keeps it wanted. Drift judgment needed no change: a successor is only ever a live, unaborted slot (an_aborted_fetched_group_stays_wanted_by_its_replacement_fill).
38. ✅ Only live arrivals retire a fill's misses (Codex, thread). Fill::accept caches a backfill before it publishes the answer, so a probe in between saw the group cached and dropped it from what the reader is owed, and the reader never got it. Only slots the live feed walks now split an owed run, and those are the same slots drift judgment takes as successors (a_backfill_cached_before_its_answer_stays_owed).
39. ✅ A refusal that isn't a loss stays local (Codex, maintainer chose a public per-group refusal, thread). Fill::drop_groups records a group dropped for every reader. moq-transcode used it for a mid-group fetch and for transient failures, so a later whole-group subscriber skipped a group the source still had. Fill::refuse_groups(range, err) refuses only the readers waiting now. moq-transcode drops a group only when the source answers not found, and moq-archive refuses on a store failure (a_refused_group_is_asked_again_by_a_later_reader, which fails with drop_groups).
40. Bindings' null max delay (merge with moq-dev/moq#6519). Both PRs made the bindings' max delay optional, with different meanings for null. This PR keeps null as the publisher's max age alone and unset as zero, mirroring moq-net's Option<Duration>, which #6519 did not have. Main's choice, null as zero, would leave the bindings unable to ask for max age alone.
41. ✅ A source's miss stays local (Codex, thread). An upstream NotFound named the group dropped track-wide, though a request starting at a later frame may only have missed an expired head. Inner::reject now refuses a miss for the readers waiting now; only NotFetchable and Old under the publisher's max age record a drop. moq-archive refuses an expired head the same way and drops only when no span of the group remains. moq-transcode keeps dropping on the source's NotFound, since it fetches whole groups only (a_source_miss_is_asked_again_by_a_later_reader, which fails with the old mapping).

Checks

Merge round (main through moq-dev/moq#6618): clean merge. just check, quest check, and just test interop --all pass.

Merge round (main through moq-dev/moq#6138): Subscription::with_groups became with_range, so this PR's call sites use it; poll_start's doc keeps both sides. just check, quest check, and just test interop --all pass.

Merge round (main through moq-dev/moq#6614): every MIGRATE.md is main's, and this PR's notes moved to the Impact section. Took main's deletion of quest/m1/api-audit/ranges-wire.md, since main already removed its moq-hls workaround. Kept this PR's binding max-delay meaning (decision 40). Pool::gc became poll in this PR's archive test. every_wire_carries_the_live_and_oldest_starts now checks that the oldest read covers every group, because lite-05 and every IETF version start their copy at the live edge and fill the older groups after it. Before this merge, main through moq-dev/moq#6386: Misses::expire passes no Superseded to the poll_drifted that moq-dev/moq#6493 extended, since an owed stretch is not a group any reader holds. Earlier, main through moq-dev/moq#6610: MIGRATE.md entries kept side by side with moq-dev/moq#6487's connection state, and this quest's file stays deleted over #6610's rewording. moq-dev/moq#6467 removed admission slots, so its deletion of fetch_caps.rs and the lite publisher's slot tests wins. just check, quest check, and cargo nextest run -p moq-net --all-features pass.

Merge round (main through moq-dev/moq#6589): moq-dev/moq#6581 retired the public-model quests and their // private: / // pending: markers, so the markers this PR added are gone too and group::Request stays deleted. Combined main's datagram cutoff in track units with preferences.budget(). Repointed the links to this quest in quest/m1/drop-set.md, quest/m1/fill-updates.md (now unblocked), and quest/m1/api-audit/requests.md, and trimmed quest/m1/api-audit/ranges-wire.md to the moq-hls workaround, since the bindings' max delay is optional here. MIGRATE.md entries kept side by side with the video rendition preference. just check, cargo check -p moq-net --all-targets --no-default-features, and quest check pass; Dart bindings regenerate unchanged.

Previous merge round (main through moq-dev/moq#6565): resolved conflicts with moq-dev/moq#6473's binding trim (its MoqGroupRequest::demand removal is subsumed by MoqFill; MIGRATE.md entries kept side by side), regenerated the Dart bindings, and gave the new suppressions a reason per moq-dev/moq#6159. just check passes except moq-uring tests that hit this host's shared RLIMIT_MEMLOCK; cargo nextest run -p moq-net --all-features and just test interop --all pass.

Previous round (merged main through moq-dev/moq#6431):

  • just check: passes, flake step included.
  • cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features: 10207 passed.
  • cargo check -p moq-net --all-targets --no-default-features and workspace clippy: clean.
  • just test interop --all: passes. Main's new Go finish client now passes MaxDelay as a pointer, and its IETF resume keeps an unset max age unset.
  • Dart bindings regenerated with just dart generate.
  • New tests, each failing without its change: a_filled_group_is_wanted_until_taken, an_accepted_groups_readers_leave_before_its_fill, a_time_start_before_the_cache_asks_nothing_below_it, a_reader_forgets_misses_behind_its_window, a_descending_reader_asks_its_newest_fragment_first, a_wide_fill_forgets_refusals_its_readers_took (fill memory), a_group_nobody_reads_releases_its_fill (moq-transcode), a_narrowed_timeline_read_skips_the_group_it_left (moq-archive), a_group_request_nobody_reads_is_withdrawn (moq-c), a_subscription_ended_copy_does_not_linger (IETF), and is_wanted / poll_unwanted assertions in a_narrowed_reader_leaves_the_rest_of_its_fill. The ffi, Go, and Python tests assert the new methods.

Earlier rounds: the regression tests the_last_sequence_misses_with_a_handler, a_later_reader_asks_afresh_for_what_a_fill_stopped_owing, a_descending_reader_asks_its_newest_miss_first, a_feed_fetch_replaces_an_abandoned_attempt_at_the_limit, and Go's TestFromMicrosSaturates; just go check, just kt check, just dart check, and just drafts check. just drafts check; ts_passthrough_crosses_a_relay_through_a_flagged_jump 30/30 under --stress-count 30 on both wires; the regression tests a_wide_feed_fill_settles_by_run, a_wide_fill_its_handler_left_settles_by_run, an_end_ahead_of_the_edge_keeps_a_late_group, a_descending_reader_turns_a_queued_fill_newest_first, a_fill_refused_group_by_group_stays_linear, an_earlier_reader_widens_a_queued_fill_to_its_head, filled_groups_are_read_in_the_readers_order, and a_refused_miss_is_dropped_once_the_feed_ends.

Follow-ups

  • Fetch as a range: remove fetch_group now that fills land, and fill the head of a cached group missing the frames a reader asks for (today it reads Lagged, as Codex noted for a late reader joining a narrower taken fill).
  • Lite-07 ranges and moq-transport ranges: serve a fill as one range request instead of serialized per-group FETCHes. Until then a wide fill against a FETCH-capable upstream still costs one FETCH per group, paced by round trips.
  • JS fills: mirror requested_fill and the optional max delay in js/net.
  • Refill evicted groups (m2, added here): refill a group evicted after a reader judged it, never delivering one twice.
  • The moq-mux container consumer settling explicit drops, which needs a public track::Subscriber::poll_drop.
  • Subscription updates reach fills (Codex, thread): a fill keeps the priority, delay, and order its joins gave it, so a reader that switches to descending reads its filled groups newest first but the handler still serves them in the old order. Covering taken fills too is its own design.
  • Bound a track's gap history, folded into Drop set (Codex, thread): a feed skipping every other group costs TrackState::drops, DropCursor::reported, and each reader's given-up misses one entry per gap for the track's lifetime, and a reader whose floor never moves cannot forget them.
  • Time-anchored backfill (Codex, thread): fill a time start that falls before the cache back to the group containing it, by re-resolving the start as filled groups start (asked newest first, each handed out only once its successor's start places it) or by carrying the time anchor in the fill.

Paper trail: started from the quest as settled in moq-dev/moq#6123, merged origin/main (including compressed tracks, moq-dev/moq#5928) without rebasing.

Two problems surfaced late and are fixed here:

  • Serial fills exposed a relay race: an IETF copy whose upstream track ended dropped its in-flight group FETCHes and stopped serving fills, so ts_passthrough_crosses_a_relay_through_a_flagged_jump hung. A finished copy now lingers for fills. The base commit passed 30/30 under stress; this branch now does too.
  • A refused miss below the start waited out the whole budget even after the feed ended. Once the feed is over (abort, seal, or settled end), every hole is unfed at once (a_refused_miss_is_dropped_once_the_feed_ends).

Draft until the open decisions in the description are settled.

Walkthrough

The track model now groups missing cache ranges into fills that handlers can accept or drop. Readers track fill demand and resolve missing groups as fills complete. Subscription maximum delay is optional, with absent values leaving the publisher’s maximum age as the bound. Protocol implementations, language bindings, tests, benchmarks, and migration documentation were updated for these APIs.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · up to b5d29

This change moves dynamic track misses to range-based fills and makes subscription delay optional. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains in the reviewed changes. One test should use paused time so a regression fails fast, and the absent-delay behavior in the container reader should be confirmed.

A pre-lite-05 relay held a fill for the live feed by expanding it into one
held request per group, so a peer that made a miss wide (a feed starting far
past a reader's floor) made the serve loop walk every sequence. A held fill
now waits on one group at a time and settles what the feed gave up by run,
judged against the cache and ledger. A reader whose fill ended unanswered
likewise settles the run instead of each sequence.

A declared end ahead of the live edge no longer ends the feed for misses:
until the edge reaches it, a group below it may still arrive.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`track_fill` sweeps readers missing the same runs below the feed's start,
each run asked as one fill they share. It showed each run costing more the
more runs a reader held: judging a run's staleness looked up its successor,
and with several ranges that walked every range past it, all empty. The
search now leapfrogs the ranges and the cache, so a range holding nothing
costs one lookup. Per run, 1024 runs now cost about 1.4x what 64 do, down
from about 5x. Judging a hole also reads only the claims that overlap it.

P2 Badge Preserve backfill demand until its acceptance is resolved

When a fill handler and an arrival-order subscriber run on different threads, Inner::accept can insert a backfill into state.lookup before publishing its outcome. If the subscriber probes between those operations, resolve sees no answer, but this branch treats the cached backfill as a live arrival and removes its wanted sequence and join. The subsequent acceptance is therefore never added to self.filled. Since insert_group_request deliberately excludes backfills from the arrival walk and next_owed also excludes them, the subscriber permanently loses that requested group. Retire only live arrivals here, or explicitly preserve cached backfills for filled-group delivery.

Fixed in 043171a. Only slots the live feed walks (Slot::is_walked) now split an owed run in Misses::expire. A backfill cached before its fill publishes the answer stays owed, so the answer still reaches the reader as a filled group. This also drops aborted slots, and those walked slots are exactly what drift judgment takes as successors.

a_backfill_cached_before_its_answer_stays_owed covers this: it caches a backfill through insert_group_request without publishing the answer, which is the window inside Fill::accept. The test fails without the fix.

P2 Badge Keep unsupported mid-group fetch refusals local to the fill

For an evicted historical group that the live feed has already passed, a fetch starting above frame 0 now calls Fill::drop_groups, permanently recording the entire sequence as unavailable. A later subscriber requesting the whole group then skips it because Misses::unclaimed excludes recorded drops, even though the source still holds the group and transcoding it from frame 0 would succeed. Previously, request.reject(Error::NotFound) failed only the pending fetch without changing the track's drops. Refuse this unsupported request without recording a permanent group drop; the shared reject helper also incorrectly makes transient source-fetch and pipeline-opening failures permanent.

Fixed in d1ebeca, as the maintainer chose. track::Fill::refuse_groups(range, err) refuses groups for the readers waiting now without recording them dropped, so a later reader asks again. drop_groups keeps meaning the source no longer has them.

  • moq-transcode refuses a mid-group fetch with Error::Unsupported. It refuses a source track lookup or fetch failure with that error, and a pipeline or container failure as internal. It drops the group only when the source's fetch answers not found.
  • moq-archive's reader refuses on a store failure, which may pass, and still drops a group that is missing or unreadable.
  • a_refused_group_is_asked_again_by_a_later_reader refuses an evicted group the feed already passed. A later subscriber of the whole group still gets a fill for it. With drop_groups in its place, the test fails.

The bindings don't get the method, since nothing there consumes it yet.

P2 Badge Keep missing-prefix refusals local to the fill

On a moq-transport passthrough route, NotFound can mean the requested prefix expired, not that the entire group is unavailable: moq-archive's an_expired_head_is_not_found test explicitly demonstrates that fetching frame 0 fails while fetching frame 3 succeeds. If a relay has evicted that group and accounted for its live arrival, this mapping permanently records the whole sequence as dropped. A later subscriber requesting the retained tail then never queues a fill because Misses::unclaimed excludes recorded drops, whereas a relay still caching the tail can deliver it. Fresh evidence beyond the fixed transcoder refusal is this separate session-side conversion of an upstream FETCH refusal into a track-wide drop. Preserve the refusal locally unless the response establishes that the whole group is gone.

Fixed in fa4df42. A source's NotFound now answers only the request that got it: Inner::reject refuses the group for the readers waiting now and records nothing track-wide, so a later reader starting at another frame asks again. Only a datagram (NotFetchable) or Old under the publisher's max age still names a group dropped. moq-archive refuses an expired head the same way, and drops only when no span of the group remains. moq-transcode keeps dropping on the source's NotFound, since it only ever fetches whole groups. Covered by a_source_miss_is_asked_again_by_a_later_reader, which failed before the fix.

An upstream FETCH answering not found says nothing about a later request
from another frame, such as the tail of a group whose head expired, so it
no longer records the group dropped for every reader. moq-archive refuses
an expired head the same way.
