WalkthroughA failed pre-draft-20 joining FETCH no longer fails the subscriber’s track or subscription. The fill settles as done, so a stream that starts mid-group is dropped and the subscription can continue at the next whole-group boundary. A clean Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

15845-15854: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAdd a whole-group delivery check to the refused joining FETCH test.
a_refused_fetch_joins_at_the_next_whole_groupchecks only that the track is not finished and that no head is outstanding. Its session script contains only the SUBSCRIBE_OK and refused FETCH responses, so no group is sent after the refusal. A regression that drops or blocks later whole groups would leave both assertions true and still pass. Script a whole-group stream after the refusal, then assert that its frames reach the consumer. The stitch tests already use this pattern for whole groups on a settled fill, but none of them drive the joining refusal path.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

read_fetch_response to distinguish Error::Decode and Error::UnexpectedMessage
from refused or failed joins: terminate the affected track or session on
protocol errors, while preserving the existing fallback behavior for refusals

- Line 3400: Update the FETCH failure cleanup to include Fill::Active in the
terminal states it settles, alongside Fill::Requested and Fill::Serving(_).
Locate the cleanup near the joining FETCH failure log; preserve the existing
Fill::Done handling in Fill::install.

Fill::Done meant both "no join was asked for" and "the join settled without a head", and open_group treated it as the former: a mid-group tail that arrived after the head failed passed through as a partial group, while one that arrived first was dropped. Fill::Unrequested now marks a subscription with no join, so a settled join always drops a tail it cannot stitch. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Reverts 972886f. Dropping a mid-group or empty tail after a failed fill reverses the decision recorded in quest/m2/ietf-headless-group.md: keep the tail as a headless group, since a relay must not drop objects it received, and end both race orders that way once the model can mark a missing head. The docs no longer claim a mid-group stream is dropped after a refusal. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Bug
On moq-transport drafts 14 through 19,
tail js-native -> rustfails: the Rust subscriber readsremote error: code=0. The browser JS publisher's IETF media cell (js -> rust) fails on drafts 14, 16 and 18 for the same reason.The relay subscribes upstream to the JS publisher with Largest Object plus a joining FETCH for the head of the Largest group. The JS publisher serves no FETCH, so it refuses. Since moq-dev/moq#6348, that refusal aborts the whole track and cancels it upstream, so every relay subscription to a JS publisher with content dies before draft 20. The relay passes the abort on as INTERNAL_ERROR.
Fix
A refused or failed joining FETCH now costs only the Largest group's head, the same as a failed draft-20 FILL. The fill settles as
Fill::Done, so a stream that starts mid-group no longer waits on it, a whole group still stands alone, and the subscription keeps delivering. This drops theEnd::Unjoinedarm and the settle-time abort that #6348 added. A malformed answer (a decode failure or an unexpected message) is still the peer breaking the protocol, so it closes the session, as any other request's does. A request that fails after FETCH_OK while the head is still being written settles the fill too, so a parked mid-group tail is released.What happens to the Largest group's tail after a failed head (kept as a partial group or dropped, depending on which stream lands first) is unchanged.
quest/m2/ietf-headless-group.mdowns that race and has decided to keep the tail.#6348's hang came from a multi-group AbsoluteJoining FETCH whose refusal lost every group up to the live one. Joins now only fetch the Largest group's head (
RelativeJoining{0}), so the worst case of a refusal is that one group.Tests

Quests
quest/m2/ietf-join-after-finish.mdassumed a refusal fails the subscription; it now says the late FETCH loses the group.quest/m2/ietf-js-joining-fetch.md: the JS publisher serving the joining FETCH itself. It needs Largest Object honored before draft 20 and the post-finish bound fromietf-join-after-finish.md, so it waits on that quest.quest/m2/ietf-join-after-finish.mdalso records the flake it causes in pinned-passtailcells with a Rust publisher (an empty group 3, about one run in six on draft 14). That flake predates this PR: it shows up asrust -> rustandrust -> js-native-nodefailures in the nightly before moq-dev/moq#6348. The tail run's occasionalrust -> js-native-*RESET_STREAM: 1failure also predates it (twice in the same nightly), andquest/m2/audit-ci.mdalready assigns it to join-after-finish.(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
