Problem

Commit ! markers undercount breaking changes, so nothing catches an API break that skips its MIGRATE.md entry, and nothing stops a backport into release from changing a published API. Finishes quest/m1/api-diff.md.

Approach

just api-diff [--deny] [rust|js|ffi]... diffs every published surface against its last release and writes target/api-diff/report.md (a summary table plus each change):

  • Rust: cargo-semver-checks with --release-type minor on every published library crate, against its newest crates.io release with every feature on. Both sides are documented as rustdoc JSON in one build each (the workspace, and a throwaway workspace depending on every baseline release), then compared crate by crate. Letting cargo-semver-checks build each crate itself cost 15-25 minutes per crate here, since it rebuilds every crate's dependencies in a workspace of its own.
  • JS: each published @moq/* package commits one API Extractor report per exports entrypoint under js/<package>/api/. The diff compares them with the same files on origin/release (or API_DIFF_BASE), so nothing is rebuilt or downloaded.
  • FFI: moq.h from the newest moq-c-v*/libmoq-v* archive against moq-c's build script, and moq-ffi's UniFFI surface as the C++ header uniffi-bindgen-cpp renders from the newest moq-ffi-v* Linux library and from a local build. The preprocessor strips comments from both, so doc edits don't count.

For JS and FFI, a removed or changed line is a break, and so is a line added inside a declaration the baseline has (its nearest less-indented line above is unchanged), such as a required field on an existing interface or C struct. Only whole new declarations are additions. --deny exits 1 on a break.

The JS reports come from js/common/api.ts, the one shared API Extractor config, which the API Extractor checks and JS API reference quests extend:

  • Every published package's build (js/common/package.ts, and js/libav/build.ts for its hand-written declarations) regenerates its reports and fails when they differ from the committed ones, so just check and CI catch a stale report on every PR. just fix (just js fix) rebuilds the changed packages with MOQ_API_REPORT=update, which rewrites them.
  • It analyzes a copy of dist/ outside the repository, where no node_modules resolves its imports, so a report never depends on whether its dependencies are built.
  • Two normalizations keep a report about the API alone: export * as X from "<package>", which API Extractor cannot follow, becomes import-then-export, and doc-presence markers ((undocumented), @public) are dropped. Reports are written with LF endings, which the @public normalization needs.
  • A type an exported signature references without exporting (an ae-forgotten-export) is declared in the report too (includeForgottenExports), so changing it changes the report.

The build's declaration check (js/common/declarations.ts) also rejects a name an emitted .d.ts references without declaring when its source declares it at module scope, which is what stripInternal leaves behind after dropping an @internal declaration. The source comes from each file's declaration map; a name the source does not declare either is a global. It caught two in @moq/net, now @internal themselves: Lister's constructor took the internal Listing, and refuseReserved took the internal RequestStream.

The Release gate calls the new api-diff.yml on PRs into release that touch rs/, js/, the lockfiles, or the tooling. It fetches release for the JS baseline. A backport runs --deny; the cut PR (head main) only reports, and the full report is a job summary plus an artifact.

Impact

  • New recipe just api-diff, new workflow api-diff.yml, and a new API diff job behind the Release gate context.
  • New committed files js/*/api/*.api.md; just fix regenerates them and a package build fails on a stale one. just js fix takes the changed-file list like check-changed.
  • New root devDependency @microsoft/api-extractor 7.59.4.
  • @moq/net: Lister's constructor and ietf/request_stream's refuseReserved drop out of the emitted declarations. Neither is published yet nor reachable as typed API (each named an undeclared type), so no MIGRATE.md entry.
  • No wire change.

Alternatives

  • Letting cargo-semver-checks build each crate (--workspace or per -p): correct but hours of rebuilds per run.
  • JS baseline from the npm tarball (this PR's first iteration): needs no committed files, but every release-gate run rebuilds every package and downloads every tarball, and a PR never sees its own API change. Replaced by maintainer decision.
  • A text diff of the emitted .d.ts: no maintained JS tool, and it reports internal declarations; API Extractor is the maintained standard.
  • uniffi-bindgen pipeline IR dump for UniFFI: the same metadata, but a deep Debug tree with docstrings and ids that shift, so a diff is noisy and hard to place.
  • Gating on version bumps: Rust versions are bumped by release-plz after the cut, so the cut cannot gate.

Report against main (snapshot)

From the first iteration, which diffed JS against the npm tarballs, at its merge base with main (other api-audit quests are still landing breaks). Every published Rust crate except moq-pattern, moq-loc, moq-nvenc, moq-v4l, moq-stats, moq-srt, moq-gst, and moq-native broke, as did every @moq/* package except @moq/pattern, plus moq.h and the UniFFI surface. Those are expected for the breaking cut.

The breaks below matched no name in their package's MIGRATE.md ## Unreleased section. This is a heuristic floor and some are covered by a broader entry, so the migration audit should confirm each:

Rust:

  • hang: timeline::Record::new (3 to 5 params), catalog::Archive::new (1 to 0), and the consts SET_INTERVALS, CLEAR_FRAMES, DEFAULT_NAME, DEFAULT_INTERVAL removed.
  • moq-archive: Key::Groups removed (shifting Key::Segments's discriminant), Query::groups/groups_from and Key::groups removed, Store::get_segments (2 to 3), Object::decode (1 to 2).
  • moq-audio: Sink is no longer UnwindSafe/RefUnwindSafe.
  • moq-e2ee: Generation and Epoch removed.
  • moq-hls: export::Rendition::playlist/segment (1 to 2).
  • moq-json: Decoder is no longer Sync/RefUnwindSafe.
  • moq-mux: Entry.sequence added to a constructible struct, Export (trait and struct) gains a generic, Binding tuple to plain struct.
  • moq-net: OpenUni/OpenBi tuple to plain struct, Timed takes 1 generic instead of 2.
  • moq-relay: Lease, Options, Cache lose Sync/UnwindSafe/RefUnwindSafe; auth::Config::init parameters changed.
  • moq-rtc: Error::RtcInput removed.
  • moq-tokio: Listener is no longer UnwindSafe/RefUnwindSafe.
  • moq-transcode: Error::Empty/Unordered swap height fields for size, Rung.height removed.
  • moq-uring: Packet::payload_mut/segments and Transmit.len removed.
  • moq-video: decode Consumer is no longer Sync, Frame::channels removed, encode::Encoded::new (2 to 3).
  • qmux: ws::Upgraded::new (1 to 2).

JS (removed exports and members):

  • @moq/hang: CLEAR_FRAMES, DEFAULT_INTERVAL, SET_INTERVALS, DEFAULT_DURATION_MIN_MS, DEFAULT_NAME, DEFAULT_TIMESCALE, interval, intervalFromFps, ProducerProps, Detector.observe, Recorder.close, and members of Sample, DataSegmentOptions, InitSegment.
  • @moq/net: the Micro/Milli/Nano/Second helpers, Ordered.final, Subscriber.final, Producer.removeTrack/unannounce, StreamCode.NoCapacity.
  • @moq/watch: MoqWatch.latency/latencyMin, SyncInput.probe.

@moq/auth extracts (its undeclared AccessInput left with Access in moq-dev/moq#6448); its only removed line, the widened TransportSchema, is covered by its MIGRATE.md.

moq-ffi (removed from the UniFFI surface; the client and server setters, data and media publishing, and the old media types are covered by moq-dev/moq#4519's entries): MoqBinaryConfig, MoqBinarySnapshotProducer, MoqBinaryStreamProducer (the MoqFlate* rename is not spelled out), MoqBroadcastProducer::remove_catalog_section, MoqCatalogConsumer::cancel, MoqContainerProducer::cut/seek, MoqMediaProducer::cut/discontinuity/flush/seek.

moq.h: every removed function is named in rs/moq-c/MIGRATE.md.

Decisions

  1. How the workflow tells the cut from a backport.
    • ✅ Head main is the cut and only reports; anything else is a backport and denies. CONTRIBUTING's cut is a PR merging main into release.
    • A cut label.
  2. @moq/auth fails extraction on main.
    • A follow-up quest.
    • ✅ Fix it in this PR. moq-dev/moq#6448 has since deleted access.ts, so the emit is fixed at its source on main; this PR adds the declaration check that would have failed its build (reproduced by restoring the old access.ts).
  3. JS gate strictness.
    • ✅ Strict: any removed or changed report line fails a backport, including API Extractor renumbering a Consumer_2 alias. Backports rarely touch API and a false positive is visible in the report.
    • Loosen it for alias renumbering.
  4. JS baseline (maintainer comment).
    • The npm tarball's declarations, extracted on each release PR.
    • ✅ Committed reports, checked on every PR, diffed against release's; the npm-tarball path is deleted.
  5. Where the committed-reports work lands.
    • ✅ This PR, since it replaces the JS half rather than adding to it.
    • A follow-up quest.
  6. Report location and regeneration (picked here, no prompt).
    • ✅ js/<package>/api/<entry>.api.md, checked in the package build that already runs the declaration and doc checks, regenerated by just fix through MOQ_API_REPORT=update.
    • API Extractor's default etc/ folder, or a separate just js api recipe.

Follow-ups

  • Seed release once: a small backport that commits release's current reports and the per-PR report check, so the first cut's diff has a baseline. Until it lands, every JS surface reads as new on a PR into release, and just api-diff against main shows the same.
  • API Extractor checks is now unblocked: it turns the shared config's messages into errors and deletes docs.ts and declarations.ts.
  • The migration audit reads the report on the cut PR and settles the candidates above.

Checks

  • just check at 418efa4 (then just js check again after merging main at 5c64dc1): every module through obs passed, including check js, whose builds regenerate every report and match the committed ones. check flake fails locally building the github-runner image (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permitted, a host sandbox limit unrelated to this change), which stops the run; the modules after it (ts_paths, markdown, shell, toml, justfile, gh) and just js test passed when run by hand. No Rust source changed.
  • just fix after merging main left every report unchanged.
  • API_DIFF_BASE=HEAD just api-diff --deny js reports every surface unchanged and exits 0; deleting one line from a committed report makes it report break and exit 1.
  • After merging main twice (reports regenerated by just fix, just js check and quest check pass): adding a required field to an existing interface or a method to an existing class in a committed report reports break and exits 1; a new interface or class, at the end or mid-file, reports additions and exits 0. The same rule on a C header: a new struct field is a break, a new struct or function an addition.
  • The declaration check fails @moq/auth's build with access.d.ts: references AccessInput, which its declarations do not declare when the pre-moq-dev/moq#6448 access.ts is restored.
  • just api-diff on the previous iteration exited 0 against main's packages for Rust and FFI, which this iteration does not change.
  • quest check, biome on js/common and js/libav, and bun test for the js/common checkers pass.
  • Not run: the workflow in CI, since it only runs on PRs into release.

…e PRs

`just api-diff` reports each published surface's changes against its last
release: cargo-semver-checks for Rust crates, API Extractor reports for the
`@moq/*` packages, and comment-stripped headers for moq.h and moq-ffi's UniFFI
surface. The Release gate runs it on PRs into `release`, failing a backport on
any break and only reporting on the cut.

Implementation pushed and description updated. Kept as a draft for the three decisions in the description: cut detection by head ref, the @moq/auth declaration failure that makes just api-diff exit 1 on main today, and JS gate strictness. just check passed apart from a local-only check flake sandbox failure; the workflow itself first runs on the next PR into release.

Maintainer decisions from a /quest-plan interview (2026-10-23), for this PR's next iteration:

  • Commit the JS reports. Each @moq/* entrypoint's .api.md is committed and checked on every PR (localBuild: false in CI; just fix regenerates). The release gate's JS half becomes a diff of the committed reports, and the npm-tarball path is deleted.
  • Seed release once. Open a small backport that commits release's current reports and the per-PR report check, so the first cut's diff has a baseline. This replaces the quest's "JS baseline is the npm tarball" decision.
  • Decision 2 settled: fix @moq/auth's undeclared AccessInput in this PR.
  • Turning API Extractor's messages into errors and deleting js/common/docs.ts / declarations.ts is a separate quest that builds on this PR's config, so keep one shared per-package config.

Decisions 1 (head main = cut) and 3 (strict JS gate) are still open.

`stripInternal` drops an `@internal` declaration but keeps any reference to
it in the same file, so the published `.d.ts` names a type that does not
exist. The build's declaration check now compares each emitted file against
its source (from the declaration map) and fails on a name the source declares
at module scope but the declarations reference without declaring.

It caught two such names in @moq/net: `Lister`'s constructor took the
internal `Listing`, and `refuseReserved` took the internal `RequestStream`.
Both are now `@internal` themselves.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every published `@moq/*` entrypoint's API Extractor report is committed
under `js/<package>/api/` and checked by the package build on every PR;
`just fix` regenerates them. `js/common/api.ts` is the one shared config,
which @moq/libav's build uses too for its hand-written declarations.

The release gate's JS half now diffs the committed reports against
`origin/release`'s instead of extracting the npm tarballs, so
`sh/api-diff/js.ts` is gone. Reports are written with LF line endings,
which also makes the existing `// @public` normalization apply.

Walkthrough

The change adds JavaScript API report generation and validation, with committed reports for the documented package exports. It adds a command that compares published Rust, JavaScript, and FFI APIs and can fail on breaking changes. The release gate runs that command for matching changes. The change also updates API report generation commands, release guidance, and related workflow tests.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8c795

This adds a release-time API diff gate. The gate can overlook removal of some namespace exports in JS packages, its Markdown report can render badly, and a change to the API-diff workflow alone does not trigger it. None of this affects shipped runtime behavior, but fix the namespace gap before relying on the gate as the release safeguard.

Explanation

The title "feat(ci): diff every published API against its last release on release PRs" matches the main change: a new just api-diff recipe and a Release gate workflow that compare published Rust, JS, and FFI APIs with their last release on release PRs. It follows conventional commit form and is specific, so it passes.

Explanation

The description explains the problem (commit ! markers undercount breaking changes), the approach (just api-diff covering Rust, JS, and FFI surfaces, committed API Extractor reports, and the Release gate workflow), impact, alternatives, and verification steps. It relates directly to the changeset, so it passes.

No new actionable bugs found in this update. The earlier metadata-failure finding is addressed: both Rust metadata pipelines now complete in standalone assignments before their output is consumed, allowing errexit and pipefail to stop the backend rather than silently skipping comparisons. Existing finding: #6477 (comment)

Direction: a focused fix that makes the gate fail safely without unnecessary complexity. The previously reviewed breaking-additions fix remains unchanged.

Verification: static inspection of the delta and surrounding control flow only; no tests, builds or API report regeneration run.

No new actionable bugs found. The omitted referenced-types finding is addressed by enabling apiReport.includeForgottenExports in the shared extractor configuration. Regenerated reports include those declarations, including ArrayElement in js/signals/api/dom.api.md. Reference: #6477 (comment)

Using the extractor's existing option is a simple fix that makes reports more complete without changing runtime APIs. Earlier metadata-failure and breaking-additions fixes remain intact.

Verification: static configuration, generated-report changes and discussion inspection only; no tests, builds or report regeneration run.

Landing summary for 2147e4e:

  • Merged main in three times (no rebase). Conflicts: CONTRIBUTING.md keeps main's new cut wording plus this PR's backport sentence; quest/m0/migrate-at-cut.md stays deleted as main finished it; quest/m1/api-diff.md is deleted with its links. Reports were regenerated after each merge (@moq/ui gained one).
  • Codex findings fixed:
    • run.sh additions: a line added inside an existing declaration (a field on an interface or C struct) is now a break; only whole new declarations are additions.
    • metadata failure: both cargo metadata queries are captured before they are read, so a failure stops the run instead of skipping every semver check.
    • forgotten exports: reports set includeForgottenExports, so unexported types that the API references are diffed too.
  • Checks: just js check and quest check pass, as does API_DIFF_BASE=HEAD just api-diff --deny js. The break and addition rules were exercised on edited reports and C headers. sh/api-diff/run.sh rust ran end to end after the metadata change. Codex reviewed the final head with no findings.
  • Decisions 1 (head main from this repository is the cut) and 3 (strict JS gate) stay as the description records them.

the existing import-then-export rewrite for both kinds.

Review comments at @sh/api-diff/run.sh:
- Line 50: Update the code fence emitted by the printf in the api-diff script to
use four backticks for both the opening and closing fences, so three-backtick
lines within the diff body cannot close the fence early.

…ith four backticks

The JS API reports are Markdown with their own code fences, so a diff of
one could close a three-backtick fence early.

Reviewed commit: 6770f61

No new actionable bugs found. The independently reported workflow-selection gap is fixed: changes to api-diff.yml now select the API diff job. Four-backtick report fences also prevent embedded three-backtick API-report fences from prematurely closing diff blocks.

These are focused fixes without changing API classification. The local-namespace rewriting suggestion was withdrawn; no unnecessary rewrite was added. Earlier metadata-failure, breaking-additions and forgotten-export fixes remain unchanged.

Verification: static comparison against previously inspected 8c79596, plus surrounding workflow/report code and review discussion. No workflow execution, tests or report regeneration run.

Re-landing after the merge queue dropped this for a conflict with main.

  • Merged main. The only conflict was in quest/m1/api-audit/README.md under Related: main removed the claim-request-type link (that quest finished in feat(net)!: only sessions accept an origin request #6496), and this PR removed the api-diff link (it finishes this quest). Both quests are deleted, so both lines go.
  • Regenerated the JS API reports, which picked up MalformedAuthToken and the malformed refusal reason from main.
  • Addressed the follow-up CodeRabbit review: api-diff.yml now selects the api-diff job in release-gate, and report diffs use four-backtick fences because the JS reports contain their own fences. I declined the local-namespace matcher finding, since API Extractor already follows those re-exports; CodeRabbit withdrew it.
  • Local just check passes on every lane except check flake, which fails on this host because unshare is refused.
