fix(net)!: refuse empty path segments at construction - #6648
Path construction collapsed an empty segment (/room/cam, room/cam/, room//cam, /) into room/cam, so one broadcast had many spellings, in Rust, JS, the FFI, and off the wire. Anything keyed or compared by spelling had to remember to normalize first. Separately, an IETF namespace field ending in / escapes to a path with an empty segment, which moq-stats grouping reparsed and expected, so a peer could panic it (Codex's P1).
Approach
A path is a run of non-empty segments, the empty path is the root (and prefixes every path), and a prefix needs no trailing /. Every constructor refuses anything else instead of collapsing it.
Rust (moq-net), on top of the lifetime-free Path from moq-dev/moq#6843:
path::TooLong becomes pub enum path::Invalid { TooLong, EmptySegment }. Path::new and the TryFrom impls fail with EmptySegment on a leading, trailing, or doubled /. Origin entry points report it as Error::EmptySegment, which a session maps to a protocol violation. Path::from_static panics on it like on a too-long literal.
moq-lite Path::decode refuses an empty segment as a protocol violation.
IETF namespace decoding builds its escaped path with the strict constructor, so a tuple field ending in / (such as ["foo/", "bar"], escaping to foo\//bar) closes the session as a protocol violation. The unchecked Path::from_escaped is deleted. A field containing / elsewhere, such as a/b from moq-dev/moq#3226, still decodes.
New Path::head(n) -> Option<Path> returns the first n segments. moq-stats derives its group key and builds GroupTrack from it instead of reparsing a string and expecting, and discovery uses it for covering prefixes.
The fuzz targets assert the invariant on every decoded path (assert_strict: it reparses to itself, and so does every head), with a regression seed for the trailing-slash namespace field.
JS (@moq/net): Path.from(...components) throws on a component with a leading, trailing, or doubled /. An empty component is the root, so Path.from(prefix, "cam") replaces Path.from(`${prefix}/cam`). Path.decode refuses one off the wire, and the IETF fromTuple goes through Path.from instead of an as Path.Valid cast, throwing ProtocolViolation.
Callers: untrusted strings are parsed where they enter, and a refusal is reported there:
Relay: a dialed URL path with an empty segment is Error::Request; a grant root, mounts, tier, or label with one is Error::Forbidden.
WHIP/WHEP answer 400.
moq-boy parses --prefix, --prefix-game, --prefix-viewer, and the name separately and joins them, so an empty (root) prefix adds no segment; <moq-boy> does the same for its attributes and idles while one is invalid.
moq-mux names a TS program broadcast under a root or .hang-only name without a stray /; MSF namespaces no longer need a separate "normalized differently" check.
CLI, gateways, FFI, C, moq-scene, and moq-studio already parse at their boundary after moq-dev/moq#6843, so they now refuse empty segments there too.
Docs: the lite draft's Broadcast section states the rule, with a changelog entry. doc/concept/moq-lite.md says it once, and doc/concept/standard.md lists the IETF refusal. MIGRATE.md entries for moq-net, @moq/net, moq-relay, moq-ffi, moq-c, moq-cli, moq-room, @moq/room, and the hand-written bindings.
Decisions
How far strictness goes: (c) ✅ Make Path construction itself strict, so no input collapses silently anywhere (maintainer's choice).
moq-lite decode: ✅ It refuses empty segments as part of (c). Our encoders never emitted one, so the only peer it affects is one that already sent a second spelling.
IETF namespace fields that escape to an empty segment: ✅ Refuse at the boundary (maintainer's choice), over teaching stats grouping about escapes.
The panic itself (maintainer's direction): ✅ Remove it rather than rely on the boundary: stats derives the group from a valid Path with Path::head, and the fuzz targets assert the invariant on every decoded path.
Choices made without asking
One error type, path::Invalid { TooLong, EmptySegment }, replaces moq-dev/moq#6843's path::TooLong, rather than a second error type beside it. Its MIGRATE.md entry is updated to match.
Literals use Path::from_static, which panics on an invalid literal, rather than .expect("a literal path"). The earlier FromStr, from_valid, and AsPath changes are gone with moq-dev/moq#6843.
A relay grant field with an empty segment is Error::Forbidden, matching how moq-dev/moq#6843 treats a too-long one, rather than the earlier Unavailable.
<moq-watch> and <moq-publish> keep main's generic invalid-attribute refusal from moq-dev/moq#6904, which already covers a name that Path.from refuses; this PR's own refusal machinery and element tests for them are dropped.
Announce compression keeps moq-dev/moq#6843's allocation-tuned &str head plus Path::concat instead of switching to Path::head.
path::Relative (catalog .. references) stays lenient. It never crosses the wire on its own and resolves into a strict Path.
moq-auth keeps normalizing its own root and path strings (it does not depend on moq-net). Anything it collapses is refused when the relay builds the Path, which fails closed. Its doc comment says that.
The IETF refusal is exactly what the strict constructor refuses on the escaped path: a field ending in /. A leading / or an inner // escapes to non-empty \ segments, so those still decode.
Impact
Breaking (Rust): moq_net::path::TooLong is path::Invalid::TooLong; Path::new, TryFrom, join, and resolve return Result<_, path::Invalid>. Path::new refuses an empty segment; Path::from_static panics on one. Path::from_escaped (crate-private) is gone. Migration: pass canonical paths (room/cam), join pieces with Path::join, and match path::Invalid where you matched TooLong.
Added (Rust): moq_net::Path::head(n) -> Option<Path>, and moq_net::Error::EmptySegment.
Breaking (JS): Path.from and Path.decode throw on an empty segment. Migration: pass canonical components, joining with Path.from(a, b).
Behavior: a relay session dialed at /room/ or /room//cam is refused instead of collapsed; the CLI refuses --broadcast /room/; WHIP/WHEP answer 400; FFI and C path entry points error.
Wire: moq-lite receivers on every version close with PROTOCOL_VIOLATION on a path with an empty segment, which no encoder of ours produced; the lite draft states the rule. IETF (Rust and JS, every draft): a namespace tuple field ending in / closes the session with PROTOCOL_VIOLATION.
Alternatives
Keep normalizing and only refuse at publish: leaves every other spelling site to remember normalization, and the stats panic reachable.
Teach stats grouping about IETF escapes instead of refusing the field: keeps a second path grammar alive for one draft's edge case.
just check (nix dev shell): passed with every selected lane run (py, rs, c, cpp, obs, js, drafts, markdown, gh, kt, go, quest, shell, toml, nix, justfile, dart), nextest 9146 passing. Swift was skipped: no Swift toolchain on this host.
cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features: 10523 passing.
cargo test -p moq-net --all-features: passing, including fuzz seeds_reach_every_arm and regressions. The trailing-slash namespace seed is renamed to draft 18, since draft 14 is gone.
just test interop --all: all checks passed (173 PASS lines).
Suggested follow-ups
Make moq-auth/@moq/auth root and path handling strict too, so a token with root: "room/" is refused when it is minted, not only when the relay applies it.
Decide whether path::Relative should refuse empty segments in catalog references instead of dropping them.
create_broadcast and dynamic refuse a string name with a leading,
trailing, or doubled slash instead of collapsing it, in Rust
(Error::EmptySegment, via AsPath::is_normalized) and @moq/net
(createBroadcast/dynamic now take the raw string).

…terop, docs, and quests
@moq/net removes DRAFT_07 and DRAFT_14..17, their ALPNs, and the
control-stream adapter; the moql SETUP negotiates only lite-01/02, and
both sides refuse an IETF version offered there. Interop clients, the
token cross-language vector, IETF drafts, docs, MIGRATE guides, and
quests move to draft 18 and later. The draft-16 unregistered filter type
test moves to draft 18 for the Moxygen smoke lane.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Draft 16 was the only moq-transport version where neither side declares a
hop. moq-lite-01 carries none either, so the anonymous dial keeps its
coverage, and draft 18 keeps a named-hop case.

fix(net)!: refuse empty path segments at construction
Oct 25, 2026
The merge with main kept this PR's free skip_fetch_payload and dropped the cooperative budget main's version had, so a large payload for an already-cached group drained in one poll.

Carry #6751's renames into the draft 14-17 removal: stats::Message,
Session::allocator(), track info(), and keep both MIGRATE entries.

Keep #6905's accept timeout and signal; legacyPeerImplementation stays
removed with the draft 14-16 bidi SETUP.

Port the strict constructor onto the lifetime-free Path: one path::Invalid
error (TooLong, EmptySegment), head(n), and the strict fuzz invariant.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No new actionable bugs found in the strict-path integration with the lifetime-free, bounded Path API. Validation now consistently reports Invalid::TooLong or Invalid::EmptySegment, including static construction and wire-error conversion. The adapted head(n), stats grouping and namespace decode paths preserve the earlier escaped-namespace panic fix (#6648 (comment)); its regression is carried to draft 18 after removal of older drafts.
Direction: keeping one validation boundary and deriving prefixes from valid Paths remains simpler than reparsing arbitrary strings. The error enum and migration notes make the combined API changes explicit. Prior attribute refusal remains present, with watch/publish now using main's generalized invalid-attribute handling.
Verification: static inspection of the Path representation integration, construction/derivation/error paths, namespace and stats consumers, fuzz assertions and selected attribute handling. Compared against the last published review while separating merged main changes. No builds, tests, fuzzing or interoperability execution performed.
Path constructors and decoders now reject leading, trailing, and repeated / rather than normalizing those spellings. The empty path remains the root. Rust adds an EmptySegment error and updates path error types. Namespace decoding, application path construction, and related tests now use or verify strict path rules. Migration guides and protocol documents describe the changed behavior.

Avoid allocating a group key on every drain.
If a dynamic path has a grouping prefix longer than inline storage, Path::head(depth) copies that prefix. Each drain repeats the allocation for every matching traffic or session row, even when the group already exists. The allocation test uses short keys, so it does not cover this case. Use a borrowed prefix for the group lookup, and construct a Path only when creating a group. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
