feat(ffi)!: closing a binding broadcast ends its tracks - #6740
A moq-ffi or moq-c track no longer ends without a cause. Before, closing a broadcast left its track handles open, a handle dropped without finish() dropped its track, and a failed finish() dropped its importer. Readers saw Dropped (Internal on the wire), which the TS export's follower does not count as the publisher leaving, or a track that never ended.
Track handles are now children of their broadcast:
Close ends the children first.MoqBroadcastProducer::close() and moq_publish_close() abort every track handle still open on the broadcast with Unroutable, then close the broadcast and finalize the catalog.
Drop is an abort. A moq-ffi handle released without finish() aborts its track with Unroutable, so a garbage-collected binding cannot leak a cause-less drop. A finished raw track lives on in its broadcast as before.
finish() stays the only clean end. A track finished before the close ends cleanly, even if its handle was released. A raw track with a declared end (finish_at) ends there on close, as when its handle drops.
A failed finish() aborts with its cause. A media or container importer whose finish fails (moq-ffi finish(), moq-c moq_publish_media_finish / moq_publish_container_finish) aborts its tracks with that error: a moq-net error as itself, anything else (a malformed tail the flush rejects) as Internal, the mapping the catalog producer already uses. An audio encoder whose final flush fails (moq-ffi MoqAudioProducer::finish, moq_encode_audio_finish) aborts its track with that error as Transport, as a failed video drain does.
Late children are refused. A track request accepted after its broadcast closed ends with Unroutable and fails (Closed in moq-ffi, MOQ_ERROR_BROADCAST_NOT_FOUND in moq-c).
Children covered: raw tracks; the media importers (MoqMediaTrackProducer, MoqMediaTrackStreamProducer, MoqMediaContainerProducer, and the moq-c media and container handles); the audio and video encoders; and the data writers (MoqJsonSnapshotProducer, MoqJsonStreamProducer, MoqJsonWindowProducer, MoqFlateSnapshotProducer, MoqFlateStreamProducer, and the moq-c JSON and binary handles). The per-broadcast Finished keeper becomes Children in both crates, which also tracks the open handles. moq-c records each child by its handle table and closes them at the State level, since the encoders live outside Publish. In moq-ffi, a data writer takes the place of the MoqTrackProducer it adopts among the broadcast's children.
To abort a data track, its core producers gain an abort, mirroring the existing moq_json::snapshot::Producer::abort.
Also: MoqTrackProducer::adopt no longer holds the track's lock while it takes the broadcast's, which a close now does in the reverse order. It takes the track out of the handle for the whole construction instead, so a second writer is refused, and hands it back if construction fails.
Encoders end outside moq-c's global lock: State::publish_close releases the broadcast and its children under the lock and returns the encoder aborts, which moq_publish_close runs after releasing it, since an encoder holds its own lock across a codec call. moq_encode_{audio,video}_finish keep the encoder's id until the drain ends, so a racing close waits the drain out instead of missing a track that still publishes. moq-ffi's MoqVideoProducer::finish and MoqAudioProducer::finish likewise hold the producer's lock through the drain.
Impact
moq-json, moq-flate, moq-mux (additive): new abort(self, err: moq_net::Error) -> Result<()> on moq_json::stream::Producer, moq_json::window::Producer, moq_flate::snapshot::Producer, moq_flate::stream::Producer, moq_mux::json::{Snapshot, Stream}, and moq_mux::binary::{Snapshot, Stream}. Consumers see err in place of a clean end; the moq-mux ones also retire the catalog entry. No migration.
moq-ffi (breaking, behavior): MoqBroadcastProducer::close() now ends every open track handle and data writer with Unroutable, and their later calls fail with Closed. A handle or data writer dropped without finish() aborts with Unroutable instead of dropping. A media finish() that fails aborts the track with its cause. MoqTrackRequest::accept after the broadcast closed fails with Closed. Migrate: finish each track (and the catalog) before closing the broadcast if readers should see a clean end; nothing else changes. No signatures changed. Bindings (py, go, swift, kt, dart, cpp) pick this up through the generated layer; their close docs and doc/lib/* are updated.
moq-c (breaking, behavior): moq_publish_close() ends every open media, container, raw track, encoder, JSON, and binary handle on the broadcast with UNROUTABLE and releases those handles, so later calls on them fail with the handle's *_NOT_FOUND code. Before, JSON and binary handles stayed open past the close. A failed moq_publish_media_finish / moq_publish_container_finish aborts the tracks with its cause. moq_track_request_accept() after the close fails with MOQ_ERROR_BROADCAST_NOT_FOUND. Migrate: finish tracks before moq_publish_close() for a clean end, and stop using child handles after it.
Wire: none.
Decisions
✅ Shape of the new data-producer abort: keep abort(self, err) -> Result<()>, mirroring moq_json::snapshot::Producer::abort (maintainer, 2026-10-25).
Choices made without asking
moq-c refuses later calls with *_NOT_FOUND, not a new Closed code. The close frees the child handles, the same way *_finish frees a handle and moq_publish_close frees the broadcast; ids are never reused, so a stale id cannot alias. The quest says "return Closed"; moq-c has no such code, and keeping tombstones to report one would hold an entry per child forever.
Raw tracks and data writers are children too, not only media handles: the moq-dev/moq#6656 audit found raw tracks, and data writers end the same way.
Dropping the broadcast handle without close() does not abort its children. A garbage-collected binding may drop the broadcast while it keeps publishing tracks, and a dynamic() handle keeps the broadcast alive; only an explicit close ends them.
A request accepted after the close is refused.moq-dev/moq#6157 kept a late raw accept working so a finished broadcast could linger; with structured ownership a track outliving its closed broadcast is the orphan this PR removes. track_request_accepts_after_the_broadcast_closes (moq-c) is rewritten to assert the refusal, and track_request_demand_survives_accept (moq-ffi) now expects the dropped track's Unroutable instead of Closed.
A finished data writer is not kept by its broadcast. Its finish() retires the catalog entry, as before; only raw tracks and media importers are kept for late subscribers.
Checks
New tests, all on a paused clock: moq-ffi closing_a_broadcast_ends_its_open_tracks, closing_a_broadcast_ends_its_open_data_tracks, dropping_an_unfinished_track_handle_ends_it, dropping_an_unfinished_data_writer_ends_it, a_failed_finish_ends_the_track_with_its_cause, finishing_before_close_ends_tracks_cleanly, accepting_a_request_after_close_is_refused; moq-c closing_a_broadcast_ends_its_open_tracks, closing_a_broadcast_ends_its_open_data_tracks, finishing_before_close_ends_tracks_cleanly, a_child_of_a_closed_broadcast_is_refused. Every behavior test fails against the sources before its fix (the data and failed-finish ones read Dropped, or the moq-c data tracks never end); the finish-then-close case passes on both, as the control.
The moq-c failed-finish path has no test: no input reaches a frame or container importer finish failure while its track is still open without a container fixture, and it shares the abort the moq-ffi test covers.
Review round: moq-c closing_a_broadcast_does_not_block_unrelated_calls_behind_its_encoder (a close waiting on a held encoder lock leaves unrelated calls free) and moq-ffi a_track_is_adopted_by_one_writer (a second adopt during construction is refused; a failed one hands the track back).
just check on 551002b (the audio encoder's failed finish): all modules pass.
just check on 0f69ef4 (after merging main again): all modules pass.
just check on 7253239: rs, py, kt, swift, go, cpp, obs, js, dart, docs, and quest all pass. just fix (with the wasm clippy) passes. dart/moq_ffi/test/leak_test.dart (a non-null optional argument is released, an RSS bound) failed once under heavy load on the previous head and passed on rerun; it does not touch this change.
Not run: just test interop --all (no wire change).

A raw track with a declared end now ends there when its broadcast closes,

Closing a binding broadcast ends its media
feat(ffi)!: closing a binding broadcast ends its tracks
Oct 25, 2026
The change adds child tracking for broadcast producers in the Rust FFI and C API. Closing a broadcast or dropping an unfinished handle ends its open track with Unroutable; later calls on closed handles fail. Finished tracks remain cleanly ended. Producer abort operations, lifecycle tests, API documentation, and language guidance are updated to reflect these outcomes.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 0f69e
When finishing an audio encoder fails in the C API, readers can see a generic dropped-track error instead of the real cause. This affects only an uncommon failure path and has a small fix. The rest of the broadcast-close lifecycle change looks sound, so the risk of merging is low.

The structured-close direction is sound, and distinguishing explicit close from garbage collection is justified. I independently confirmed two existing findings rather than duplicating inline comments:
P1: rs/moq-c/src/publish.rs:1244–1245 aborts encoders while the global State mutex remains held. Waiting for an encoder resource lock can block unrelated sessions/callbacks. Remove handles under State, then abort outside that lock: #6740 (comment)
P2: rs/moq-ffi/src/producer.rs:707–709 clones before clearing ownership, allowing concurrent JSON-window constructors to adopt the same producer. Reserve ownership atomically and restore it on construction failure: #6740 (comment)
No additional actionable findings in the inspected lifecycle paths. JSON/flate/binary ownership remains an explicitly documented follow-up.
Verification: static inspection of C/UniFFI child registration, shutdown, encoder locking, JSON takeover, wrapper changes, and added tests. I did not run builds or tests.
…ts cause
Closing a broadcast now also ends its JSON, flate and binary data writers
with Unroutable, in moq-ffi and moq-c, and a moq-ffi data writer released
without a finish aborts its track. The core producers in moq-json,
moq-flate and moq-mux gain an abort for it, mirroring
moq_json::snapshot::Producer::abort.
A media or container importer whose finish fails now aborts its tracks
with that error instead of dropping them without a cause.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Compared with my previous review at 96f9bcf. Extending child ownership to data writers and preserving failed-finish causes is a sensible completion of the lifecycle contract. No additional actionable findings in this delta.
Both prior concurrency findings remain open: encoder shutdown under the global lock (#6740 (comment)) and non-atomic track adoption (#6740 (comment)). The separately reported finish-versus-close race also applies: finish removes its handle before draining, so concurrent close cannot find it to abort (#6740 (comment)). That is not newly introduced by this update.
Verification: static review of changed ownership, abort paths, surrounding encoder lifecycle, and added tests; no builds or tests run.
…mically
Closing a moq-c broadcast now releases its encoders under the global lock
and aborts them after, so a stalled codec no longer blocks unrelated
calls. An encoder finish keeps its id until the drain ends, so a racing
close waits it out instead of missing the track. A moq-ffi track handle
is taken for the whole writer construction, so two writers cannot adopt
one track.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Compared with 7253239, accounting for the intervening main merge. The focused ownership fixes are sound: C encoder shutdown no longer holds the global State lock, and track adoption now reserves ownership atomically.
One existing P2 remains, independently reported at #6740 (comment): UniFFI video finish (rs/moq-ffi/src/video.rs:580–597) and audio finish (rs/moq-ffi/src/audio.rs:420–422) remove the producer before draining. Concurrent broadcast close then misses the still-open track; video can publish drained frames after close returns. Keep draining producers synchronized with shutdown or retain independently abortable track state. These paths are unchanged since my prior review, not regressions from this update.
The C finish/close race now waits for draining before close returns, although a stalled codec can still block that broadcast’s close. No additional actionable findings in the inspected delta.
Verification: static inspection of shutdown/adoption paths, surrounding locking, and added tests; no builds or tests run.
MoqVideoProducer and MoqAudioProducer finish now hold the producer's
lock through the drain, so a racing broadcast close waits it out
instead of finding the producer gone while its track still publishes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Compared with 8da4c96, accounting for the main merge. The previous UniFFI finish/close finding #6740 (comment) is addressed: audio and video retain the producer lock through draining, preventing close from returning while a drained track still publishes. Stopping the video follower before acquiring that lock avoids a lock-order problem.
No new actionable bugs found. This is a focused, consistent fix. As already noted for C, close still waits for the codec and can block if it stalls; this change does not provide independently abortable track state.
Verification: static inspection of the delta and surrounding finish, abort, and follower locking. No new race-specific tests were added in this fix; I did not run builds or tests.
Landing. Since the last review round: merged main twice, fixed all four concurrency findings (moq-c encoder aborts run outside the global lock; encoder finish keeps its id until the drain ends; moq-ffi adopt reserves the track atomically; moq-ffi encoder finish holds its lock through the drain), and deleted the now-finished broadcast-lifecycle epic. Recorded the maintainer decision to keep abort(self, err) -> Result<()>. Codex and OpenAI found nothing new on 0f69ef4; just check and quest check pass.

moq_encode_audio_finish and MoqAudioProducer::finish now abort the
track when the flush fails, as the video drain already does, so readers
see the failure instead of Dropped.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Compared with 0f69ef4, accounting for the main merge. The independently reported audio-finish issue #6740 (comment) is addressed in both bindings: failed flushes explicitly abort with the error instead of dropping an unfinished track, and C also removes the child registration. Successful finishes retain their existing behavior.
No new actionable bugs found. This focused change consistently follows the video error path. Previously reviewed concurrency fixes remain intact; the already-noted stalled-codec shutdown limitation is unchanged.
Verification: static inspection of both binding paths and the underlying audio finish/abort implementation. No new failure-path tests accompany this fix; I did not run builds or tests.

Finishes Closing a binding broadcast ends its media in the broadcast lifecycle epic, found while fixing moq-dev/moq#6656. The epic stays: this was its last child when the PR opened, but main has since added js/net close FIN, so per that newer plan only this child is removed. The rest of its goal shipped in moq-dev/moq#6660, moq-dev/moq#6656, moq-dev/moq#6649, and moq-dev/moq#6741.
