fix(net): align transport and reader behavior across runtimes - #6905
The pre-cut audit found four JS/Rust divergences: lite03/04 PROBE waited for a SETUP stream those versions never send, group consumers shared one destructive cursor, accepting a connection had no handshake deadline or failure cleanup, and empty JSON payloads silently looked like EOF.
Approach
Gate PROBE capability lookup on the negotiated version having SETUP. Two real Connection drivers cover both older drafts.
Reuse the existing group mirror for each consume handle, sharing frame payloads while keeping independent cursors. Read cached frame counts through the existing private hook registry.
Bound accept with connect's existing 30-second default and ConnectTimeout, caller cancellation, transport-close race and failure cleanup. Cancellation stops owning the session after acceptance.
Refuse empty JSON and invalid boolean frames. Retain falsy JSON and EOF behavior through the public Zod consumer.
Remove the unreachable per-subscription timescale wait and the unused internal Reload announcement/stats wrappers. Their tests now exercise the actual pooled Connection or shared announcement pump.
Impact
Public API: additive optional Connection.AcceptProps.timeout and signal; no new error class. A silent handshake now fails after 30 seconds. Callers needing an unbounded handshake can explicitly pass timeout: Milli(0) and own cancellation.
Group consumers independently replay from frame zero, including buffered and future frames. Closing one reader does not close another reader or the producer.
Malformed empty JSON and boolean frames throw instead of returning EOF or accepting invalid values. Valid null, false, 0, and empty JSON strings still decode.
Reload is internal and absent from the package exports/API report, so deleting its dead wrappers removes no public symbol.
Wire: no format, negotiation or close-code registry changes. Lite03/04 now receive the estimates their existing PROBE format already carries.
Validation
just fix passed (49s); clean committed-head just ci passed (142s), including selected JS checks/tests and quest validation (622 documents). Focused tests pass: 65 tests, 1734 assertions. Native Chromium public-consumer and two-peer proofs pass, harness type-check passes, and just test interop --all passes across Rust, Python, Go, C++, browser JS, native Node/Bun, C and GStreamer. The existing compressed publisher × reader sweep now uses public consume handles and runs in Chromium too: 1/4/16 publishers × 1/4/16 readers, 32 frames, ten rounds. It verifies complete delivery, shared payload identity and one inflated copy per group; timings are evidence, not an acceptance threshold or a speedup claim.
Alternatives
Reuse existing mirror, clock, cancellation and race helpers rather than adding cursor implementations, public frame-count accessors or a new terminal-lifecycle abstraction. Keep pooled Connection announcement/stats behavior and its shared helper; delete only wrappers with no production consumer.
Follow-ups
No open decisions. Merged with moq-dev/moq#6750: consume() stays an independent mirror, so #6750's shared (non-owned) consume-handle path had no caller left and is removed; every group reader is now an owned mirror and close() keeps #6750's meaning (releases only that handle, which drains what it buffered). The Reload announced/stats wrappers stay removed, and this PR's code, bench and tests use finish()/abort(). The naming/request changes in moq-dev/moq#6751 and moq-dev/moq#6752, and old-IETF removal in moq-dev/moq#6753, do not change these invariants. moq-dev/moq#6899 owns separate IETF slot/failure fixes and is not incorporated here.

No actionable bugs found in the changed areas. Reusing the existing group mirror is a simpler, coherent fix for independent public read cursors; the private frame-count hook avoids creating unused readers. The PROBE version gate and removal of the timescale wait match when subscription entries actually become visible. Accept's timeout/cancellation cleanup preserves caller reasons and stops owning the session after success, while JSON/boolean validation keeps malformed frames distinct from EOF.
Direction and scope look sound: shared helpers and removal of unused Reload wrappers avoid another lifecycle abstraction. Preserve the noted mirror-ownership invariants when integrating #6750.
Verification: source review of changes and relevant surrounding lifecycle code, plus inspection of added unit/browser coverage and API changes. I did not run tests, CI, browsers, benchmarks, or interop; the PR's reported results were not independently reproduced.
accept now supports timeouts and abort signals. Group and track readers change how they handle empty frames and boolean payloads. Lite subscriptions use resolved numeric timescales, and PROBE checks protocol support before waiting for SETUP. The change removes announcement and stats methods from Reload, extracts the compression fanout benchmark, and adds unit and browser tests for these behaviors.

test/justfile: kept both browser checks (encoded-preview, net-cleanups) in alphabetical order.
API report regenerated with no change. quest check, just check (js check/test, markdown, gh, quest, shell lanes; @moq/net 2823 pass), just test harness (both browser checks pass) and just test interop --all pass locally.
The test asserted right after advancing past the 100ms PROBE cadence, but
the shared write budget can yield a host task mid-write once 4ms of real
time has passed, so advance returned before the PROBE reached the client.
Drive the clock until the probe signal reports the estimate instead.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Merge-queue failure on the new moq-lite-03 two-Connection peers receive PROBE without waiting for nonexistent SETUP test (run) was a race in the test, not production code.
Root cause: the test advanced the manual clock past the 100ms PROBE cadence and asserted right away. Manual.advance returns after one host-task drain with no newly armed timer, but the publisher's PROBE write goes through the module-level writeBudget in js/net/src/stream.ts, which yields a MessageChannel host task once 4ms of real time and 32 writes have accumulated. When that yield landed mid-write, advance returned before the PROBE reached the client. Whether it fires depends on real time and on how many writes earlier tests made, so it showed up only in the merge group. Forcing Budget.poll to always yield reproduces it deterministically for both lite-03 and lite-04.
Fix (df82427): drive the clock with clock.drive(...) until client.probe reports an estimate, rather than asserting after a fixed advance. It passes with forced yields and in 30 consecutive runs. Also merged origin/main (e76fc8c) with no conflicts. just check and just test interop --all pass.
Follow-up, not in this PR: with Budget.poll forced to always yield, four existing js/net tests on main fail in the same way (pooled probe readers share demand and carry it through reconnects, a handle's announcements sync with the shared origin, a lite connection probes only while its estimate is observed, a listing past the announces cap is reset, and the session stays). The underlying cause is that Manual.advance cannot see host-task yields from Budget/nextTask. That needs a separate decision at the clock or Budget level.

No actionable bugs found in the update since my previous review. After accounting for the main merges, the only PR-specific change is the PROBE test synchronization in js/net/src/net-cleanups.test.ts:86–94: driving the manual clock until the estimate arrives handles host-task yields without weakening the rate/RTT assertions. Reusing Manual.drive is simpler than adding another fixed delay. The other 21 files retain the same PR-specific edits; there were no prior findings to resolve.
Verification: inspected the delta and Manual.drive implementation. Source review only; I did not run the tests or reproduce the reported timing flake.
Migrate this branch to #6750's lifecycle vocabulary (finish/abort). Keep
Group.Producer.consume() an independent mirror, which leaves main's shared
consume handle path unused, so every group reader is now an owned mirror.
Keep the Reload announced/stats wrappers removed.

No actionable bugs found in the #6750 lifecycle integration since my last review. With consume() still creating an independent mirror, every Consumer now owns its state: removing the shared-state ownership branch preserves parked-read wakeups, reader-local close/abort behavior, and the producer/other readers. The finish/close migrations in the added tests and benchmark preserve clean completion, and the removed Reload wrappers stay removed.
Direction looks sound: one ownership invariant is simpler than retaining an unreachable shared-reader mode. This addresses the earlier integration caveat, not a previously reported bug.
Verification: compared against the last reviewed head with upstream/base changes separated; inspected mirror creation, release/recovery paths and existing lifecycle tests. Source review only; no tests, browsers or interop run.
The Reload announced()/stats() wrappers stay removed (unused closeUnwanted import dropped); the subscriber keeps the plain-number timescale.
This PR's tests, bench and browser client migrated to finish()/abort(). API report regenerated with no diff.
Local: just check (js check/test, markdown, gh, quest, shell, large_files), just test harness, and just test interop --all pass. Codex 👍 on this head. Landing.

Merge origin/main brought #6751, which renamed Track.Producer.writeGroup
to createGroup. The interop probe fixture now drives the clock until the
estimate lands, and the announce teardown test uses closeUnwanted like
Connection.announced.

#6910's test assumed consume() shared the producer's queue, so reading it
trimmed what a later mirror replays. Every reader is now an independent
mirror, so the later mirror replays all frames and still keeps the high PTS.

No new actionable bugs found. After separating the main merge, the delta is limited to four test/fixture files. The browser PROBE wait now addresses the existing timing finding, and the announcement teardown test now uses production's closeUnwanted/producer-closed lifecycle, addressing the existing lifecycle finding. These are fixes to independent findings, not new findings here.
The createGroup migration and revised PTS replay expectation match the current API and independent-reader semantics. Reusing production lifecycle helpers is the simpler direction; no additional abstraction is needed.
Verification: source comparison against my last reviewed head and relevant helper/test inspection only. I did not run tests, browser checks or interop.
Re-landing after the merge queue dropped this for check js (writeGroup no longer exists after moq-dev/moq#6751).
Merged origin/main (no rebase). The only renamed identifier the PR used was Track.Producer.writeGroup; the JSON test now uses createGroup(0). API reports regenerated with MOQ_API_REPORT=update: no diff.
moq-dev/moq#6910's PTS test assumed consume() shares the producer's queue, so reading it trimmed what a later mirror replays. With this PR every reader is an independent mirror, so the test now checks that the trimmed reader keeps the high PTS and a later mirror replays every frame while still reporting it.
CodeRabbit findings fixed: the interop PROBE fixture drives the clock until the estimate lands, and the announce teardown test uses closeUnwanted like Connection.announced.

Clean up when session establishment fails.
If either handshake rejects, Promise.all exits before the try block. The test then leaves the mock transports, spy, and installed clock active. The installed clock remains active until installed.close() runs, so a handshake regression can affect later tests. Move session establishment inside the try block, and close both transports in finally even when no session was established. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
