feat(ts): translate hashbrown's HashMap, HashSet, and HashTable as std's maps, with std's capacity - #398
hashbrown was the largest source of refusals in moq's model census: 127 of its 355, from SIMD groups, raw allocation, and byte reinterpretation JS has no counterpart of. hashlink keeps its entries in a hashbrown::HashTable, so its maps refused too. Finishes quest/m2/ts-model/hashbrown.md.
Approach
hashbrown is an opaque stock crate, as rand is: nothing of it translates. Its HashMap, HashSet, and map entries are std's (Std::HashMap, Std::HashSet, Std::Entry), and its calls take std's mapping path, so the same runtime functions serve both with no config.
HashTable<T> is a new rt.HashTable<T>, an rt.HashMap<undefined, T> that chains each item under the hash its caller gives (a u64 past 2^53 included), tested by the caller's equality. Its entries are rt.TableEntry<T>, the place of the item an occupied one holds, so get_mut, into_mut, and iter_mut lend places of items JS copies. It never calls a method's hasher, since it never moves an item.
hashbrown's DefaultHashBuilder and DefaultHasher are std's RandomState and DefaultHasher: foldhash's state is seeded at random as std's is, so which hash a key gets is never observable. hashbrown maps keyed by JS objects under the default hasher now translate.
Capacity, per the maintainer's decision of 2026-11-01: a map's capacity follows std's guarantees only, as Vec's does since feat(ts): hold std's capacity guarantees for Vec, VecDeque, and BinaryHeap, with pushes untouched #372: at least its length and what with_capacity and reserve ask for, doubling as it grows, and held through removals and clear. hashbrown's exact capacity_to_buckets and allocation_size are not followed. cap is stored only where an operation sets it (with_capacity, reserve, shrink_to) or a removal reads it, so insert never reads or writes it; reading it doubles from 3 while short of the length. allocation_size is a slot and a control byte per entry the capacity holds.
HashTable's clone keeps each item's hash, as hashbrown copies its table without rehashing; a std map's clone does the same now, rather than rehashing each cloned key.
Iteration order of hash maps, sets, and tables stays the runtime's: with a fixed hasher, native's order follows hashbrown's bucket layout, which the capacity decision leaves out, so tests write only what does not depend on it. hashlink's linked order is its own and is tested exactly.

hashbrown's refusals in the model drop from 127 to the 2 at hashlink's own DefaultHashBuilder (hashlink/src/lib.rs:19-20), now a crate's own hasher: a crate's own hasher.
Tests, each differential against native wasm32:

lang: capacity::maps, std's HashMap/HashSet capacity guarantees through with_capacity, reserve (panics past isize::MAX included), shrink_to, shrink_to_fit, clear, retain, drain.
Insert cost, just ts bench on a quiet host (nixos2), new hash/ workloads (a u32 map, inserts alone or inserts, lookups, and removes), ns per key, translated / A/A / main:

main sits inside the A/A spread throughout: insert is unchanged.
Public API (the translator's output and its runtime), additive only, so no MIGRATE.md entry:
New runtime exports: rt.HashTable, rt.TableEntry, rt.table*, rt.hashCapacity, rt.hashWithCapacity, rt.hashReserve, rt.hashShrinkTo, rt.hashAllocationSize; rt.HashMap gains an optional cap.
std's HashMap and HashSet: with_capacity now emits rt.hashWithCapacity, which panics past what one may hold as native does, where main dropped the request; reserve and shrink_to_fit, no-ops on main, are calls; capacity, shrink_to, and allocation_size, refused on main, translate.
Alternatives
hashbrown's exact bucket counts and allocation layout: ruled out by the maintainer's decision, and they would put bookkeeping on every insert.
Translating hashbrown from source over the unsafe quest: its SIMD groups and byte reinterpretation have no JS counterpart worth their cost, and std's maps would not share it.
Calling a HashTable method's hasher on growth, as hashbrown does when it rehashes: when it rehashes follows the bucket counts left out above, and hashbrown documents no count of calls.
Dropped: the quest's open question on exact capacity, settled as above.
Follow-ups
A crate's own hasher, now the ts-model epic's child: hashlink's default hasher, which needs std's provided BuildHasher::hash_one and std's Hash impls writing into a crate's own Hasher.
The model's other hashlink refusals, its iterators implementing DoubleEndedIterator, ExactSizeIterator, and FusedIterator and overriding size_hint (39), predate this PR and have no quest yet.
Review
quest review, Codex harness, gpt-6.1-sol at medium effort, three rounds against origin/main; last round on head 3e066c44, 0 findings.
Round 1 (head 53cdc4f3), 3 findings:
Fixed (high): cloning a non-empty HashTable threw, rehashing through a hasher a table lacks. Reproduced as 182 stock differences; hashClone now keeps each item's hash, and maps::table clones a populated table and queries the clone.
Refuted (medium): calling a HashTable method's hasher when it grows, as hashbrown does when it rehashes. When it rehashes follows hashbrown's exact bucket counts, which the 2026-11-01 decision leaves out, and hashbrown documents no count of calls.
Refuted (medium): exact allocation_size from hashbrown's layout, excluded by the same decision.
Round 2 (head 9cca1e1b): 0 findings.
Round 3 (head 3e066c44, after merging origin/main and formatting): 0 findings.
…acity, and bench a map
hashbrown's DefaultHashBuilder and DefaultHasher are std's RandomState and
DefaultHasher: both seed at random, so which hash a key gets is never
observable. The lang differential checks std's HashMap and HashSet hold
std's capacity guarantees, and the bench times a map's inserts and lookups.
The quest is done; a crate's own hasher and a nested generic drop are
follow-ups.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A HashTable has no hasher, so a clone that rehashed each item threw; hashbrown
copies its table without rehashing, so the clone keeps each hash. The lang
case retains by key, as which keys every other one keeps follows iteration
order, and a clone's capacity is not checked, as std promises nothing of it.

Walkthrough
The translator now maps hashbrown maps, sets, tables, and entry operations to runtime collection functions. The runtime adds HashTable operations and tracks hash collection capacity. New fixtures cover hashbrown collections, hashlink LinkedHashMap behavior, and capacity checks. The benchmark suite adds HashMap workloads. Documentation updates describe hash collection support and two translator goals.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 3e066
Custom hash builders with observable effects can produce different behavior after translation. Refuse unsupported builders before discarding them; the remaining allocation-size suggestion improves testing rather than fixing a demonstrated runtime failure.

Add a numeric check for the runtime's allocation_size formula. Do not copy the native hashbrown values.
The capacity case compares only the sign of each populated collection's allocation_size. A wrong positive value passes. The TypeScript runtime defines allocation_size as hashCapacity(m) * (size + 1), but no test asserts that formula numerically.
Native hashbrown values are not a valid expected output. The runtime's capacity follows the standard-library guarantees, and it does not follow hashbrown's bucket counts. The differential harness compares native and translated output exactly, so native numbers would make the test require hashbrown's allocation layout. Add a focused TypeScript assertion instead. For example, a map that holds one entry with size 8 must report 3 * (8 + 1), which is 27, because hashCapacity returns at least HASH_MIN (3) once a map holds an entry.

Add a focused TypeScript assertion for the runtime’s numeric allocation_size
formula, using hashCapacity(m) * (size + 1); for a map holding one entry with
size 8, assert the result is 27. Keep this check out of the native hashbrown
differential output so it does not depend on hashbrown’s bucket counts.

Refuse custom BuildHasher builders in with_hasher and with_capacity_and_hasher.
with_hasher and with_capacity_and_hasher discard the builder. For primitive keys, hashing returns before it checks the hasher type, so the builder is never called. A custom builder with observable build_hasher or Hasher effects is silently ignored. Reject non-RandomState builders in these two arms, or hash keys through the supplied builder.
