Problem

moq dropped WASM in moq-dev/moq#7475, and with it moq-wasm, which picked the browser's randomness for moq-net's rand (getrandom 0.4) and uuid on wasm32. Without it both refuse to build for wasm32-unknown-unknown, so just ts moq and just ts census could not move past moq at 30f25c04. Quest: quest/m2/ts-moq-pin.md.

Approach

  • The driver picks the randomness, as a browser's binary would. getrandom (0.2 js, 0.3/0.4 wasm_js) and uuid 1 (js) document only a crate feature for wasm32. uuid has no --cfg, and cargo can't enable a feature on a transitive dependency from the command line. So when cargo tree shows the package's wasm32 graph holds one of them, rust2-ts checks the package as a dependency of a root package it writes in its target directory (ts/src/browser.rs).
    • The root enables each pick's feature alone, from the source the graph resolved it to (crates.io, path, or git with its ref). getrandom 0.3 also gets the backend cfg its pre-0.3.4 releases need.
    • It resolves as the package's own workspace does: the workspace's Cargo.lock, [patch], [replace], resolver, and [profile.dev]. Overrides of packages never built (normal and build edges) are dropped, which only quiets cargo's warnings.
    • Paths get --remap-path-prefix'd to the workspace root, so file!() and census spans read as they do for a member.
    • --features/--no-default-features move into the root's dependency, and <package>/<feature> reads as <feature>. These are refused loudly through the root: --all-features, a dependency's feature (dep/feat), a package from a registry other than crates.io, and a [profile.dev.package."*"] override from the workspace's Cargo.toml or cargo's config. "*" skips workspace members, and the package is no member of the root's workspace, so it would reach the package there as it never does natively.
    • --locked/--frozen hold the workspace's own lockfile to account in the cargo tree probe, since the root's copy gains its own entries.
    • A package whose graph holds neither crate is checked exactly as before.
  • rust2_driver::cargo::Check gains root: Option<&Path>, the manifest cargo resolves the package through. ffi passes None.
  • ts/justfile pins moq at 4b8e37bd (moq's main, 2026-11-01) and drops --package moq-wasm. The stock fixture's translation no longer passes the getrandom custom cfg (only its native differential build does), so it exercises the root.
  • Split pin. ffi/justfile gets its own moq_rev at the old 30f25c04, the way #390 splits it, since just ffi moq can't follow ts to moq's main (see Decisions settled). moq-pin takes the revision.
  • Bench. just ts bench's moq-wasm package size row is gone, along with the moq-wasm build and the bench shell's wasm-bindgen-cli. The wasm route (the codec fixture at the same size-optimized profile) stays.

Census, old pin 30f25c04 against new pin 4b8e37bd

census refusals function instances
moq-net (net.toml) 941 → 984 11,630 → 11,674
model (model.toml) 222 → 233 3,631 → 3,742
kio (kio.toml) 110 → 141 433 → 557

Both pins are measured with this head's translator, which includes main's hashbrown mapping (#398).

No translator regression: just ts moq translates and type-checks at the new pin. The new refusals come from code moq added:

Earlier in this PR, the census through the root matched one through a hand-written root package, refusal for refusal.

Impact

  • rust2-ts CLI: a package whose wasm32 graph holds getrandom or uuid now translates with no cargo args. For such a package, these are refused: -- --all-features, a dep/feat feature, and a "*" dev-profile override. Before, it failed to build unless the caller picked a backend.
  • rust2_driver::cargo::Check has a new root field, and workspace_root is now pub (internal crate, unpublished).
  • No change to translated output. The stock snapshot is unchanged.

Alternatives

  • A stand-in crate in ts/justfile, like ffi's standin: moq-specific, and every consumer would need its own, which is a config gap.
  • getrandom's --cfg getrandom_backend="custom" or "extern_impl" with no package: this works for getrandom, but uuid only takes a feature, so moq-net still fails.
  • --features uuid/js in moq's recipes: this works only because moq-net names uuid directly, and it is consumer config.
  • Sharing ffi's Picks parser and [patch] derivation through rust2-driver: that would be a larger refactor of ffi. ts's needs are simpler (copying the root manifest's tables), so it stays separate for now.

Follow-ups

  • New quest The std calls moq's main added to the model for the model's new std refusals.
  • quest/m1/ffi-export/recursion-limit.md now carries the "one pin again" goal: once moq-tokio fits the limit, the exporter drops its own moq_rev for just ts moq's.
  • #390 can drop its pin split for this one and only bump ffi/justfile's moq_rev.
  • The model epic's moq-clock reference reads as kio's clock, since moq moved the clock into kio, and m2's list names the model as moq's browser route.

Decisions settled

The maintainer settled these on 2026-11-01:

  1. just ts bench's moq-wasm package row.
    • ✅ A: drop it, with wasm-bindgen-cli from the bench shell. The codec fixture's own wasm route stays.
    • B: keep it, built from 48aaca7d, the last moq revision with moq-wasm.
  2. The translator's pin against the exporter's.
  3. How the driver picks the randomness.
    • ✅ A: the driver's generated root package, with the features getrandom and uuid document.
    • B: a moq-specific stand-in crate in ts/justfile.
  4. The "*" profile override through the root (review round 4's checkpoint).
    • ✅ A: refuse it loudly, from the manifest or config alike, and delete the rewrite. This is implemented, recorded in the Design change: comment.
    • B: keep the rewrite and fix round 4's two findings.
    • C: land as is, with the findings recorded as a quest.

Review

quest review with Codex gpt-6.1-sol at medium effort. A new session started after the design change (decision 4A).

  • Round 1, on 4468cd98: 1 finding, fixed. A trailing --features or -F with no value was dropped silently; it now errors.
  • Round 2, on 208a7b4b: no findings.

After round 2's head, the PR added two merges of main; the head is 269ac07c. Per CONTRIBUTING, I'm recording a skip of a new review because the merges change quest prose only. The first merge was conflict-free. The second resolved #405's conflict on the model quest's Goal line by keeping #405's wording, with this PR's "kio, with its clock, and moq-pattern" applied on top.

The first session's rounds 1-4 found 11 issues. 9 were fixed. Round 4's 2, both in the "*" rewrite, went away when decision 4A deleted that rewrite.

Checks:

  • just ci passes on 269ac07c.
  • just ts moq and just ts census pass at moq 4b8e37bd.
  • just ts moq also passes at 947c91d0.
  • just ffi census passes at ffi's pin.

Design change: through the generated root package, any [profile.dev.package."*"] override now fails loud, whether it comes from the workspace's Cargo.toml or from cargo's config, instead of being rewritten to keep it off the former workspace members. This deletes the rewrite: the "*" merge, the member lookup, and the override synthesis. The maintainer settled it on 2026-11-01 (decision 4A). The root still drops overrides that name a package it never builds, so cargo prints no warnings about them. An override of any other spec form, such as a URL, is kept.

Walkthrough

The translator now checks packages that use supported getrandom or uuid versions through a temporary Cargo root that selects browser randomness. The CLI passes that root to Check when needed. The moq pin and benchmark workflows no longer build or report the separate moq-wasm package route. Related README and quest documentation is updated.

Fixed issue severity: <fixed_issue_severity>Low</fixed_issue_severity>

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 269ac

The changes retain narrow risks: concurrent local runs can interfere with each other, and browser-added dependencies can lose named profile settings. Mergeability is low risk with owner awareness and follow-up; isolating generated files and checkouts and correcting profile filtering would remove these limitations.

codex / Codex land fixer note:

The landing log reports:

Line 1: Conflicts with the base: quest/m2/ts-model/README.md

I resolved the paragraph locally by retaining base's browser-route goal and this PR's kio-clock wording, alongside the added std-call requirement. Validation then blocked landing: cd ts && cargo test --locked --test fixtures task -- --exact --nocapture failed with:

task-fixture differs from native Rust:
35417 cases, 3059 panics, 628 differences

The first failing input, 0000180006000303060004000600, shows different native and TypeScript waker-identity results. The same test failed in the full TypeScript suite and when rerun alone. Addressing or accepting that mismatch requires review beyond a mechanical conflict fix. Blame here identifies the documented merge conflict; it does not attribute the waker mismatch to this PR.

cargo build --locked passed in driver, ffi, and ts. Driver tests passed. FFI tests passed except api_kotlin initially lacked KOTLINX_COROUTINES; its exact rerun passed with the installed coroutine jar configured. cargo fmt --all --check passed in all three packages, and cd ts && tsc -p runtime passed. The remaining TypeScript suite was stopped after the standalone failure confirmed the blocker. The attempted merge was aborted, leaving pr-397 unchanged.

Give the FFI standin its own moq checkout, or lock checkouts of target/moq.

The FFI standin now checks out 30f25c04 into ../ts/target/moq. The TypeScript moq and bench recipes check out 4b8e37bd into the same directory and read it afterward. A concurrent run can switch the tree mid-read, so a TypeScript run may fail or use another revision.

Serialize the root manifest write with the Cargo check.

Concurrent rust2-ts runs that share a target directory and package write the same browser/<package>/Cargo.toml with no lock. A run can then check with another run's features, or Cargo can read a truncated manifest. Write each run's root into its own directory, or hold a lock on that directory from the write through cargo check.

Keep named overrides for crates the root builds.

dev_profile filters the workspace's named dev-profile overrides against built. built is collected before the root adds its browser picks. A crate that a pick adds, such as wasm-bindgen or js-sys, is absent from built. Its override is therefore dropped, even though the root builds the crate. The crate then compiles under default dev settings. Compute the filter against the root's own resolved tree, or against the set of crates the picks add, not against built alone.

Review comment at @ts/src/browser.rs around lines 402 - 407:
Update the override filter in dev_profile so it retains named overrides for
crates included in the root’s resolved build, including crates added by browser
picks. Filter against the root’s resolved tree or a set that also includes the
picks’ crates, rather than relying on built alone; preserve the existing name
and version matching behavior.
