fix: dashboard failures and retry summary timing out on big databases - #404
On app-dev (5.3M exchanges), two dashboard requests hit the 30s database timeout: the failures-to-act-on tile and the retry summary. Both asked for "the newest failures nothing has retried yet" by walking every exchange from the newest down. Where every failure gets retried, the first match is millions of rows back.
Two partial indexes on Postgres, built concurrently: one for failed results, one for retries by start time.
New GET /api/dashboard/failurestoacton. It counts from the failures instead of going through the exchange list.
The retry summary only looks at chains from the last 7 days, and indexes answer the whole query.
The dashboard loads the in-flight count, the failures to act on and the retry summary separately. A slow one shows "unavailable" on its own tile instead of holding up or failing the page.
Measured on a local copy built in app-dev's pattern (3.1M exchanges): both queries went from the 30s timeout to about 35ms, and the migration took 17s.
Not fixed here: the exchange list the tile opens (failed, newest attempt only) is still slow at this size.

Summary
Summary
Added GET /api/dashboard/failurestoacton. It checks dashboard-view permission and counts failed results with no retry, capped at 10,001.
Limited retry-chain candidates to retries started in the last seven days. Added two concurrent PostgreSQL indexes to support the failure and retry queries.
Moved failure, in-flight, and retry-summary requests into separate dashboard queries. Their loading or error states do not block the main dashboard content.
Risk
risk:medium. The change affects query semantics, dashboard API behavior, and database migrations.
Security-sensitive areas
The new failure-count handler enforces dashboard-view permission. No authentication or authorization policy changes are described.
Test coverage impact
Added integration tests for failure counts and the seven-day retry window, plus dashboard tests for failed and stalled requests. Test execution results were not provided.
Deployment and operational concerns
The migration creates and drops indexes concurrently. Confirm the deployment process supports concurrent index operations and account for database load during index creation. Rollback drops both indexes. The retry-summary panel will omit chains without a retry started in the last seven days. The exchange list linked from the failures tile may remain slow on large databases.
The dashboard adds a failures-to-act-on query and limits displayed failing chains to retries from the last seven days. It adds database indexes for these queries and separates metric requests from the main dashboard request. The dashboard display, tests, and documentation are updated.
The new handler counts unsuccessful results without a matching retry, capped at Search.CountCap + 1. Retry-chain candidates are limited to the last seven days. Integration tests and documentation cover these criteria.
The model and migration add filtered indexes for retry exchanges and failed exchange results. The migration drops both indexes when rolled back.
Separate dashboard queries SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/api/client.ts, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/api/http/dashboard.ts, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/api/queryKeys.ts, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/api/types.ts
The client adds separate queries for failures-to-act-on, in-flight exchanges, and retry summaries. The main dashboard request no longer fetches these metrics.
The dashboard renders separate loading, unavailable, and result states for the metrics. Tests cover endpoint errors and a delayed failures-count response.
Resolve the migration recovery locking before merging: retrying an interrupted index build can block exchange traffic. The dashboard should also distinguish an unavailable in-flight count from zero.

SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/dashboard/DashboardPage.tsx:230-239 Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Show "unavailable" when a metric refetch fails, not the last loaded value.
After a successful load, a failed 60-second refetch keeps the last data and sets isError. The failure tile checks data before isError, so it keeps showing the previous count with no error marker. The retry panel uses the same order and can keep showing the previous summary.
Apply the same order in the retry panel. Check retrySummary.isError before retrySummary.data in both the description and the chain list. The "Unavailable right now" state then replaces the stale summary.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 3df4e1d1002b); the change keeps it reachable.

Use a concurrent drop for the invalid-index recovery.
The recovery branch in ConcurrentIndex.Create runs a plain DROP INDEX. That statement takes an ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock on xchange. If an interrupted build left ix_xchange_retries_started_on invalid, the retry waits behind open reads, and inserts queue behind that wait. Run the drop with DROP INDEX CONCURRENTLY in its own statement with suppressTransaction: true. Run the invalid-index check outside the DO block.

Show an unavailable state when the in-flight count fails.
The exchanges tile drops the in-flight suffix when getInFlight fails. A failed count renders the same as a zero count, so the tile gives no sign that the value could not be read. Sibling tiles in this change show "unavailable right now" for their failures. Add a matching branch in the sub expression for the exchanges tile:

@coderabbitai About the follow-up on showing the last loaded value after a failed refetch (DashboardPage.tsx): keeping it as is. The rest of the dashboard already keeps its last loaded data when a refresh fails (the page shows its error state only when there is no data at all), and a count from a minute ago is more useful than a dash. A tile only shows "unavailable" when it has no value yet.
The other two are fixed in 9a0d91f. ConcurrentIndex now renames an invalid leftover, which takes only a share update exclusive lock on the index, and drops it with DROP INDEX CONCURRENTLY. A failed in-flight count now reads "in flight unavailable".

@hamzahalq Understood. Keeping the last loaded value after a failed refetch matches the dashboard’s existing behavior. I withdraw the request to replace that value with “unavailable.”
Source inspection confirms both changes in 9a0d91f6:
ConcurrentIndex renames the invalid index, then drops it with DROP INDEX CONCURRENTLY and suppressTransaction: true.
The in-flight count shows “in flight unavailable” when the request fails and no value exists.
I did not run tests or verify PostgreSQL lock behavior at runtime.
