Adopt #5269's NOT_SUPPORTED: the relay refuses unverifiable in-band tokens with SessionError::Unsupported, and the draft and Lite reset shims are dropped. Both pending-AUTH overflows now refuse with TOO_MANY_REQUESTS. The relay tokens quest is complete, so it is deleted and its references updated. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe change adds bounded pending-auth queues and withdrawal tracking in Rust and JavaScript. The relay can verify additional credentials for an admitted session, combine their grants, and remove grants independently. New client APIs attach credentials to existing connections and present them across reconnects. The change also adds tests, documentation, and auth benchmarks. Preserve untouched query bytes during renewal
When the original query contains noncanonical but valid syntax such as flag, lowercase percent escapes, or an encoded value whose raw spelling matters, parsing and serializing every pair changes fields other than jwt (flag becomes flag=, escapes are normalized, and malformed UTF-8 may be replaced). The auth contract exposes the query exactly as dialed so custom auth servers can interpret or authenticate its raw form; an in-band renewal can therefore be refused even though only its credential was meant to change. Replace the jwt pair without decoding and re-encoding the remaining query.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Fixed in a93d325: renewal now swaps only the jwt pair and leaves every other byte of the dialed query untouched (renewal_replaces_only_the_jwt_pair).

Return Unsupported for public-rule sessions
For a relay configured with --auth-public, Auth::admit still installs a Source, so this check does not identify the session as unable to verify in-band tokens. The request instead reaches Decider::Public, is returned as Refused, and is ultimately sent to the presenter as Unauthorized; clients consequently treat an unsupported feature as a bad credential, contrary to the documented public-rule behavior. Carry whether the admission source can verify attachments and reject public-rule tokens here with SessionError::Unsupported.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Fixed in a93d325: Auth records whether its decider can verify in-band tokens (false for public rules), and the relay refuses those with SessionError::Unsupported before admission (public_rule_sessions_refuse_tokens_as_unsupported).

Reviewed commit: a93d325.
The independent-credential/centralized-union design is a reasonable direction, but three lifecycle/accounting issues remain below. Preserve that design while making connection termination, replay, and per-token accounting explicit.
The earlier public-rule Unsupported finding is fixed. The raw-query finding is improved for nonempty fields, but refresh.rs:286 still strips empty components: flag&&jwt=old& becomes flag&jwt=new. For raw-query-sensitive deciders, preserve these separators too and add that regression case.
Verification: static GitHub review of the full PR, followed by the one-commit update against the unchanged base. No builds or tests run.

[P2] Count newly attached JWTs against the per-token session cap
This sends Connect with a new JWT but the existing session ID. moq-auth/src/serve.rs:279–283 immediately accepts known IDs, without checking/counting the replacement JWT. With --limit-token=1, establish two sessions using distinct valid JWTs A/C with matching roots, then attach B to both: both succeed, and the stored slots still count only A/C. Account for each credential associated with a session and enforce its cap on first attachment, while retaining one remote/session slot and one End. Add a two-session attachment regression test.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 84aeab6: moq auth serve keeps every JWT presented for a session id, so an attached JWT new to a session counts against its own --limit-token cap until that session ends, without taking another remote slot (attached_tokens_count_against_their_own_cap).

[P2] Terminate attached leases when the connection owner closes
Only the shared lifecycle is ended here; attached drivers watch their own Producer and never observe this termination. Retain an attached Consumer, close the owner, wait for End, then call attached.revalidate(): it still sends Revalidate and attached.closed() remains pending. The server's revalidation path recreates the removed session-limit slot, so an ended connection can remain counted. Have attached drivers observe connection termination and stop/drain their requests before the owner's End; cover a retained attachment in the close test.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Related ordering gap: end waits on in-flight attach connects via admitting, but not on an attached lease's in-flight revalidate, so the server can see revalidate after end for the same id. Draining attached drivers before End, as suggested above, should cover both.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 84aeab6: an attached driver now holds the connection's admission guard for its lifetime, stops when the connection ends, and awaits any in-flight Revalidate first, so End is the last request for the id (an_attached_lease_ends_with_its_connection). This also covers the revalidate-after-end ordering noted in the reply.

[P2] Keep retained tokens across transport failure during replay
handle.add() also returns session-close errors. If a replacement transport closes before its replayed AUTH is answered and before the separate reconnect task clears State, token? permanently exits present, ending the retained token and preventing replay on later sessions. The biased next branch only helps when State was updated first. Treat session closure during this pending phase like the established-token loop does, while keeping actual credential refusals terminal. Extend the replacement test with an unanswered AUTH, close that session, then verify replay on a third session.

Fixed in 84aeab6 for both the pending add and the established watch.changed() arm: an error while the session has closed waits for the next session instead of ending the token; other refusals stay terminal (a_session_closing_mid_replay_keeps_the_token, which fails without the fix).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not report an auth-server outage as a token refusal.
auth.decide returns super::Error::Unavailable when the auth server times out, cannot be reached, or answers 5xx. The Err(_) arm rejects every error with SessionError::Unauthorized and the reason "token refused". A renewing client cannot tell an outage from a bad credential. moq_tokio::connection::Auth::add also ends the token permanently when it is refused. At connect, the relay separates these cases on purpose: Unavailable maps to BAD_GATEWAY. Do the same here: map Unavailable to a non-auth code, so a moq-lite client can retry. On moq-transport, to_code still collapses the code to UNAUTHORIZED, but the reason text will be correct.

Same for the 10 s ADMIT_TIMEOUT, which decide maps to Unavailable. It is worse in combination with moq_tokio::connection::Auth: present() treats any refusal as final, so a single outage during renewal permanently kills the retained token and the session closes at the original expiry.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@mriise Yes. My proposed change fixes error classification, but it does not fix recovery. The 10 s ADMIT_TIMEOUT also maps to Unavailable. If present() treats every refusal as final, a non-auth error code alone will not preserve the retained token.
The fix needs both parts:
- Report
Unavailableas a transient server failure, not"token refused". - Preserve the retained token and retry transient failures with bounded backoff. Keep invalid-credential refusals terminal.
Retry must not extend an accepted grant’s expiry. If no other credential remains valid, the session must still close at the original expiry.
Thanks for the clarification.

Reporting a transient authorization-server failure with a non-auth error code does not provide recovery if the client treats every refusal as terminal. Retry must not extend an accepted credential's expiry.

Agreed that this is a real gap, but it reverses this PR's recorded decision to keep refusals coarse (UNAUTHORIZED, cause in the reason) and needs a client retry policy in moq_tokio::connection::Auth too. Holding it for a maintainer decision rather than changing it here; see the PR description.

The handshake timeout now wraps only accept_request; request.ok() is bounded by the drain deadline alone. A WS peer that sends SETUP and then withholds flow-control credit holds the task until shutdown, which moq_tokio::server::Request::ok guards against with the remaining handshake deadline. Errors from preparing(...)? and ok() also skip refused.close(code, reason), so the peer sees a bare drop. Wrap both in the same timeout and close path as the SETUP read.

Auth::embedded sets in_band: true, but Admission.connection is private, so an embedder cannot tell an in-band attachment from a new session. Both arrive as an Admission with the same session id. An embedder that counts or limits sessions per admission (like tests/auth_embedder.rs) double-counts, or refuses the renewal as a duplicate. Separately, decide frees the pending slot at ADMIT_TIMEOUT while the spawned decider keeps running, so for an embedder the 128 in-flight bound does not hold. (The HTTP decider is fine because reqwest's 10 s timeout matches.) Expose attachment on Admission, or default in_band to false for embedders until they opt in.

With in-band tokens, "A changed root, mounts, peer, or upstream closes the session" and "A 401 or 403 closes it" are true only when no other credential remains; otherwise only that token's grant is removed. An auth server that cannot decide an in-band token (outage or the admission timeout) now refuses it with INTERNAL_ERROR on Lite instead of UNAUTHORIZED, and moq-tokio's retained token presents it again on the reconnect backoff. Retrying never extends an accepted grant's expiry. Admission::attached() lets an embedder tell an in-band token from a new session, and a decider still running past the admission timeout keeps its in-flight slot until it answers or drops the admission. Reject a removed initial credential before reissuing it
When the original credential revalidates to a changed root, mounts, routing classification, or unusable role permissions while another token keeps the session alive, Event::Changed removes its Credential, but owner remains open because the auth client treats the successful revalidation as an update. A later empty AUTH request reaches this branch, clones that owner without calling valid, and can re-authorize the invalid grant relative to the original root, restoring access the auth server just removed. Track that the initial credential was invalidated or validate its current grant before accepting another empty request. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Both findings from the previous review are addressed: rs/moq-relay/src/auth/refresh.rs:163–166 validates the owner's current grant before empty-token acceptance, and rs/moq-auth/src/client.rs:349–383 routes withdrawal, expiry, and owner termination through a common in-flight drain before releasing the connection's End. Added regressions cover changed-root empty-token refusal and withdrawal during outstanding revalidation.
The independent-credential/centralized-union design remains a sound direction. No new actionable findings in this update.
Verification: static GitHub review of the authored fix and affected current code against the current PR base, excluding merged mainline changes. No builds or tests run.

Reissue the exact grant that passed validation
On a multithreaded relay, if the owner lease revalidates or closes after line 163's snapshot but before this constructor, Credential::new reads the owner grant again and accepts that second value without validating it. A root-, mount-, or routing-changing grant can therefore receive AUTH_OK and briefly enter the union instead of being refused; the next Changed pass eventually removes it, but the peer can already act on the invalid grant. Fresh evidence after the earlier fix is this second owner.grant() read; capture one snapshot, validate it, and use that exact snapshot when issuing the credential.

Fixed in 0d5966b. Both the empty-token and verified paths now build the credential first and validate its own snapshot, so the grant that gets issued is the grant that was validated. There is no regression test because the race needs a revalidation between two adjacent reads on another thread.

…ssues Validation read the lease's grant once and the credential read it again, so a revalidation between the two reads could issue an unchecked grant. Build the credential first and validate its snapshot. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The snapshot-race finding is addressed: rs/moq-relay/src/auth/refresh.rs:172–178 and 262–265 now validate the exact credential snapshot subsequently issued, covering both empty and verified tokens. The previously reviewed revalidation-drain fix remains intact.
The independent-credential/centralized-union design remains a sound direction. No new actionable findings in this update.
Verification: static GitHub review of the authored change and affected current code, excluding merged mainline changes. No builds or tests run; this update adds no regression test for the concurrent-read race.

Merge summaryThe relay now renews sessions in band: each AUTH token is verified like the URL token and holds its own lease. The session's scope is the union of its live grants, capped by the SETUP role, and the session ends only when its last grant does.

Port of #4675, squashed from #5148's first seven commits (7277e5d through 311a73c) and replayed onto main now that #5106 and #5107 have landed. The moq-tokio half is left out here; it moves onto #5282's Connection::auth() handle in a later commit. A SUBSCRIBE or PUBLISH_NAMESPACE is authorized by the session grant first, then by the AUTHORIZATION TOKEN it carries, verified by the app's auth::Handle::requests() acceptor and scoped to that one request, else UNAUTHORIZED. The token's grant never joins the session union, ends with the request, and is renewed in band by an update. A refused renewal ends only that request. Draft-19+ advertises and enforces MAX_REQUEST_UPDATES, closing with TOO_MANY_REQUEST_UPDATES (0x1B). Replaying onto main keeps main's decoder rules: a request repeating an identical token is refused MALFORMED_AUTH_TOKEN, and draft-17+ updates spend their own request ID. Problem
A relay session lives exactly as long as its URL credential. A client cannot present a fresh JWT in band, so a long session must reconnect before
exp, and an in-band AUTH stream to the relay grants nothing. Theauth::Handle::requests()queue is also unbounded: a peer that opens AUTH streams faster than the relay verifies them grows it without limit.Approach
rs/moq-relay/src/auth/refresh.rs): native, WebSocket, and io_uring admission takeauth::Handle::requests()before starting the protocol driver. Each non-empty token is verified through the same admission path as the URL token (jwtreplaced in the original query, connection facts unchanged). Every accepted credential holds its own lease; the session's scope is the union of all live grants, intersected with the SETUP role, re-authorized whenever the union changes. Expiry, refusal on re-check, or withdrawal removes only that credential's grant; the session ends when no credential remains. Origin handles are scoped to the admitted root and role, so a new prefix becomes reachable without rebuilding the session. A token must keep the admitted root, mounts, and routing classification. Certificate sessions and public rules refuse in-band tokens withSessionError::Unsupported(fix(net): send explicit AUTH NOT_SUPPORTED on Lite #5269'sAUTH_ERROR NOT_SUPPORTEDon both protocols). Renewal swaps only thejwtpair and leaves every other byte of the dialed query as it was. An empty token is answered from the live connection lease. The WebSocket handshake timeout covers the SETUP reply. An auth server that cannot decide (outage or the 10 s admission timeout) refuses the token withINTERNAL_ERRORon Lite instead ofUNAUTHORIZED, and a decider still working past the timeout keeps its in-flight slot until it answers.Admission::attached()tells an embedder an in-band token from a new session.Client::attach(&Consumer, Request)verifies another credential for an admitted connection. The attached lease revalidates on its own cadence but never POSTsend; it ends with its connection, and only the connection's own lease reports End, after every attached request has landed.moq auth servecounts each attached JWT against its own--limit-tokencap until the session ends.lease::ConsumerbecomesClone; dropping the last clone ends the lease, andcloseends every clone.TOO_MANY_REQUESTS.Request::closed()/Request.closedlets an acceptor observe withdrawal of an unanswered token.Connection::auth()returns anAuthhandle owned by the connection:add(token)presents a token on the live session and re-presents it on every replacement session until itsTokenis dropped;grant()watches the live union. A session closing mid-replay does not end a retained token, and a transient refusal (INTERNAL_ERROR,TOO_MANY_REQUESTS,CONTROL_MESSAGE_TIMEOUT) presents the token again on the connection's reconnect backoff;UNAUTHORIZEDandNOT_SUPPORTEDstay final.server::Request::auth()exposes the handle beforeok().doc/bin/relay/auth.mdgains "In-band renewal";doc/concept/{moq-lite,standard}.mdupdated.Impact
moq_auth::Client::attach(new);moq_auth::lease::Consumer: Clonewithcloseending every clone (behavior change);moq_net::auth::Request::closed(new);moq_tokio::Connection::auth,moq_tokio::Auth,moq_tokio::connection::auth::{Token, Watch}(new);moq_tokio::server::Request::auth(new);moq_relay::auth::Admission::attached(new).Request.closedadded to@moq/net's authRequestinterface.INTERNAL_ERRORon Lite (stillUNAUTHORIZEDon IETF). The relay now answers in-band AUTH with real grants instead of refusing them. A token past the pending bound is refused withAUTH_ERROR TOO_MANY_REQUESTSon Lite (IETF's AUTH_ERROR registry carries it asUNAUTHORIZED); the queued overflow was previously anUNAUTHORIZED"unanswered".connectwith the same session id for each in-band token. Attached grants never sendend, and stop revalidating before the connection'send.moq auth servecounts an attached JWT against its own--limit-tokencap.Decisions
Settled by the maintainer (✅ marks the selected option); 6 was picked by the iterating agent, and 8 and 9 were decided on 2026-10-13.
Persistent client API
Connection::auth()(Auth,Token,Watch) here first; feat(auth): a request token is one more auth on requests() #5148 rebases onto this handle and adds request tokens through it.Session::auth()and re-present after reconnect.Admission ownership in moq-auth
Client::attach(&lease::Consumer, Request)with a cloneableConsumerwhosecloseends all clones; identity checks reject another client, a non-owning lease, or changed connection facts.connectthat owns End and mints credential leases.Pending AUTH work bound
Distinct Expired / Timeout refusals
UNAUTHORIZED, reason phrase says why); typed expiry stays with Expired token error, which now also owns switching the relay. Partly revisited by 8: an auth server that could not decide is refused as transient (INTERNAL_ERRORon Lite), notUNAUTHORIZED.Stats tier across credentials
Overflow refusal code (picked by the iterating agent as the recommended option)
TOO_MANY_REQUESTS: it is one condition (the peer outran the verifier), and a presenter can tell it from a bad token and retry once its pending tokens settle.UNAUTHORIZED("unanswered"); only the relay's in-flight overflow usesTOO_MANY_REQUESTS.Unsupported-token signalling vs fix(net): send explicit AUTH NOT_SUPPORTED on Lite #5269
SessionError::Unsupportedand drops its own draft sentence and the LiteVersion-to-reset shim.Auth-server outage during renewal (CodeRabbit, mriise):
Unavailableand the 10 s admit timeout are refused asUNAUTHORIZED"token refused", andmoq_tokio::connection::Authtreats any refusal as final, so one outage drops a retained token.Unavailablewith a transient code on Lite (the existingINTERNAL_ERROR, so no new wire value; IETF still collapses toUNAUTHORIZED), and have the retained token retry transient refusals on moq-tokio's reconnect backoff, never extending an accepted grant's expiry. This partly revisits decision 4.Embedders and in-band attachment (mriise):
Auth::embeddedaccepts in-band tokens, but an embedder cannot tell an attachment from a new session, andADMIT_TIMEOUTfrees the in-flight slot while the embedder's decider keeps running.Admission(Admission::attached()), keeping embedders opted in, and hold the in-flight slot until the decider answers rather than freeing it at the timeout.Validation
just checkpasses, and CI is green after merging fix(interop): give the Rust interop clients the repo rustfmt config #5381.0891041(raw query bytes, public-rule tokens as unsupported) are fixed with regression tests.a93d325..5d5a0dfare fixed with regression tests where practical (attached lease ends with its connection, attached JWT cap, replay across a closed session, empty query segments).a6ffc5c(Codex, OpenAI) are fixed with regression tests: an empty token is refused once the connection's own credential revalidates to a grant the session cannot use, and an attached lease withdrawn or expired mid-Revalidate lands it before the connection's End. Codex's follow-up onf0ab7e3(validate the exact grant snapshot that is issued) is fixed without a test, since the race needs a revalidation between two adjacent reads.INTERNAL_ERRORwhile the session still closes at its only grant's expiry, a retained token presented again after 1 s and 2 s of backoff,UNAUTHORIZEDstaying final,Admission::attached()on both paths, and a decider past the admission timeout keeping its slot until it drops the admission.just test interop --allpasses on the merged head, including the denied-token matrix and finite track tails.TOO_MANY_REQUESTS), certificate sessions refusing tokens as unsupported; moq-auth attach never reporting End, End waiting for an in-flight attach, attach identity checks; moq-net/JS pending bounds and their overflow code; moq-tokio token surviving session replacement; an end-to-end TCP and WebSocket relay test where a token widens a live prefix and withdrawal resets only its streams.rs/moq-net/benches/auth.rsandrs/moq-relay/benches/auth.rs(just rs bench-relay-auth), smoke-run nightly.Follow-ups
