Problem

listen.timeout bounded a connection's handshake through SETUP and SETUP OK, but auth admission in between ran under a separate hardcoded ten-second cap (ADMIT_TIMEOUT) that listen.timeout neither extended nor shortened. A peer that finished SETUP could hold a connection open past the configured deadline while admission was pending, an auth server answering connect after ten seconds was refused however long the deadline was, and listen.timeout = "0" did not wait forever through admission as documented. Closes the handshake-admission-deadline quest (decided 2026-10-13 on #5244's review).

Approach

  • moq_tokio::server::Request::within(work) finishes a future within what remains of the handshake deadline, closing the session with the timeout code otherwise. The deadline itself stays private and still runs from the first packet; nothing starts a fresh timer at admission.
  • The tokio listener (connection.rs) and moq --listen run admission under request.within(..). The io_uring listener runs its spawned admission task under its existing Deadline and aborts the task on expiry, so an expired admission leaves nothing running detached. All three record the refusal as Unavailable, as the old timeout did.
  • HTTP reads (admit_http) race the web listener's timeout, the same listen.timeout; an HTTP read has no handshake deadline object to inherit, so its bound starts at admission.
  • Auth::admit and Cluster::admit wait on the decider for as long as the caller does and document that the caller owns the deadline. The server decider drops its in-flight connect when the relay stops waiting, so the auth server sees the request dropped at the deadline.
  • moq_auth::Client drops its client-wide reqwest timeout: connect inherits the caller's deadline, while attach, revalidate, and end keep a ten-second bound, now applied per request and reported as Error::Unavailable.
  • In-band token verification keeps its fixed bound (ATTACH_TIMEOUT, formerly ADMIT_TIMEOUT): it runs after the handshake, which listen.timeout does not cover.

Tests

  • auth_lifetime: an unanswered admission closes the connection at a one-second listen.timeout; a decision eleven seconds in is admitted under a thirty-second deadline; "0" admits a decision an hour in. Paused time between the admission and the decision, real sockets otherwise. All three fail on main.
  • web: an unanswered HTTP admission answers 502 once the listener's timeout passes.
  • moq-auth: connect waits eleven seconds for a slow server while an attached credential is refused at ten, on paused time.
  • uring: a pending admission is abandoned at the handshake deadline. Skips without io_uring, so it runs in CI, not here.

Impact

  • Public API: moq_tokio::server::Request::within is new. moq_relay::auth::Auth::admit, moq_relay::cluster::Cluster::admit, and moq_auth::Client::connect keep their signatures but no longer time out on their own. A reqwest timeout on attach, revalidate, or end is now moq_auth::Error::Unavailable rather than Error::Request.
  • Config: listen.timeout now includes admission (doc/bin/relay/config.md, doc/bin/relay/auth.md). Changelogs for moq-relay, moq-auth, moq-tokio, and moq-cli note the behavior change for slow auth servers.
  • Wire: none.

Alternatives

  • Keep ADMIT_TIMEOUT as an inner cap, or add a separate auth.timeout: both rejected in the quest's decision (one deadline through admission).
  • Naming: Request::within matches the crate's private within helper. bounded or until_deadline would read as well; happy to rename.

Follow-ups

  • moq --listen has no in-process admission test; rs/moq-cli/tests/listen.rs drives the binary with --auth-public, where admission never waits.

Clippy, rustfmt, and the four crates' tests pass locally; just check stops at its JS half here (no Nix shell), so CI covers that.

Thanks for this! Two things block it right now:

  • The new uring::tests::pending_admission_is_abandoned_at_the_handshake_deadline fails in the io_uring CI job with "the admission outlived the handshake deadline: Elapsed". It skips without io_uring, so it likely never ran locally; the uring path doesn't seem to abandon a pending admission at the deadline yet.
  • It now conflicts with main in rs/moq-relay/src/connection.rs, rs/moq-relay/src/uring.rs, rs/moq-tokio server.rs and quest/m1/README.md.

On naming, Request::within reads fine to me; no need to rename unless a reviewer pushes back. Ping when it's rebased and the uring test passes and we'll review.

Thanks @mriise! The maintainer marked this ready for review. The 2026-10-20 update fixes the earlier blocker: uring::tests::pending_admission_is_abandoned_at_the_handshake_deadline now passes locally on io_uring (5/5 runs with MOQ_STRICT=1), and just check and quest check pass.

Walkthrough

Authentication admission now uses the listener handshake deadline across CLI and relay listener paths. Request APIs expose deadline-bounded work, and relay admission can be withdrawn when the caller abandons it. Owner connections follow caller-controlled deadlines, while attached-credential admission, revalidation, session-end reporting, and in-band token verification retain ten-second limits. The changes add timeout and delayed-admission tests and update documentation and changelogs.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 69aa5

Authentication admission now follows the listener's handshake timeout instead of a fixed ten-second cap. When the timeout is set to infinite, a slow or unresponsive auth server can let pending authentication tasks accumulate with each new connection, because nothing caps how many run at once. The documentation also promises that embedded authenticators are told when a caller gives up, but the public API gives them no way to see that. Add a cap on concurrent admissions and narrow the documented cancellation guarantee before merging, unless the infinite-timeout risk is explicitly accepted.

P1 Badge Add migration steps for callers losing the timeout

When a downstream directly awaits moq_auth::Client::connect (or moq_relay::Auth::admit / Cluster::admit) and the decider never answers, this change now waits forever instead of returning after ten seconds, so existing retry and shutdown paths can silently wedge unless callers add a deadline. I checked rs/moq-auth/MIGRATE.md and rs/moq-relay/MIGRATE.md; neither ## Unreleased section describes that required migration. Add the deadline-wrapping guidance to both affected packages.

P1 Badge Update Admissions rustdoc to the caller-owned deadline

When an embedder uses the returned Admissions directly or a Connection<Accepted<_>> with no outer listener deadline, this new unbounded await can last forever, but the public Admissions rustdoc still says any decision taking over ten seconds is refused (auth.rs lines 982-985). That false contract can cause embedders to omit the now-required bound; update it to describe the caller-owned deadline and reserve the ten-second language for in-band attachments.

P1 Badge Add the moq-cli timeout migration

For existing moq --listen deployments that set --listen-timeout, this changes auth admission from the old fixed 10-second cap to that flag, whose help declaration in rs/moq-tokio/src/listen.rs:172-177 defines the handshake timeout and permits 0s; short values can now reject slow auth earlier, while zero can wait forever. rs/moq-cli/MIGRATE.md has no ## Unreleased entry telling operators to review that value, so add package-specific migration guidance.

P2 Badge Include HTTP admission in Web timeout rustdoc

When an embedder constructs Web directly and relies on Web::with_timeout, this new branch also times out every HTTP auth admission and returns 502, but that public method's rustdoc still says it only bounds idle/header handling and WebSocket SETUP. Direct users can therefore miss the new failure mode for slow HTTP auth decisions; include HTTP admission in the method's timeout contract.

Thanks @mriise! Ready to merge at 69aa5f4. Pushed on top of your branch (maintainer edits):

  • Merged main; no conflicts.
  • Docs the reviewers asked for, no code changes:
    • ## Unreleased MIGRATE entries for moq-auth (Client::connect has no timeout of its own), moq-relay (Auth::admit and Cluster::admit are caller-bounded, and listen.timeout now covers admission), and moq-cli (--listen-timeout bounds admission).
    • The Admissions and Web::with_timeout rustdoc now describe the caller-owned and HTTP admission deadlines.
    • doc/bin/cli.md and the moq-cli changelog name --listen-timeout.

Checks: just check passes locally. PR CI skips by design, so the merge queue is the gate. Codex reviewed the final head with no findings, and every review thread has a reply.

Bound server-backed initial admissions before spawning tasks.

Decider::spawn creates a detached task for each Self::Server admission and awaits client.connect for initial connections. Admissions is unbounded, and its contract states that nothing serializes admissions. With listen.timeout = "0", unanswered requests can wait forever. A slow auth server can therefore retain one task and request per accepted connection.

Add finite admission concurrency or backpressure before this tokio::spawn. A semaphore inside the spawned tasks would still allow unbounded task growth.

Do not promise cancellation for embedded deciders without exposing it.

Auth::admit also supports Auth::embedded. When the caller drops the future, the embedder still owns Admission, but the public API provides no way to observe that the reply was dropped. Admission::abandoned is test-only, and grant and refuse ignore failed sends. The embedder can therefore continue authentication work after the handshake ends.

Limit this guarantee to the internal Decider::spawn path, or add a public cancellation or closed-state API. Update rs/moq-relay/MIGRATE.md with the same scope.

Use kio polling for the new cancellation branch.

moq-relay exposes an embeddable library target, so the library guidance applies here. The merge-base already used tokio::spawn in Decider::spawn; this change adds only the tokio::select! cancellation branch. Existing Tokio usage does not create an exception to the explicit guidance.

Poll the admission request and the Tokio oneshot closed() future through moq_net::kio::wait instead. This is a localized refactor, not a high-effort change.

On CodeRabbit's two outside-diff findings from the 22:47 review:

  • Embedded deciders are not told (auth.rs:899-903). Agreed, fixed in 47f1055.
    • Admission::abandoned is test-only, so the withdrawal guarantee held only for the server decider.
    • The Auth::admit rustdoc and rs/moq-relay/MIGRATE.md now say two things: dropping the future drops the auth server's in-flight request, and an embedded decider is not told.
    • Making abandoned public would let embedders observe it. I left that out until an embedder needs it.
  • Unbounded server admissions (auth.rs:788-800). Not changed.
    • Each spawned task serves one pending connection. It returns once that connection's handshake drops its reply (admission.reply.closed()), so tasks never outnumber pending handshakes.
    • A finite listen.timeout, the default, bounds both.
    • "0" is the operator explicitly asking for no deadline, and pending handshakes are already unbounded under it. A cap on admissions alone would not bound them.
