feat(net): resume JS tracks across same-epoch route swaps; keep a replaced route feeding until its successor delivers - #5836
Conversation
A request's broadcast handle stays the same when another route of its epoch takes over: a logical front re-sources each track, and every reader resumes on the new route's copy from the first group it lacks. Mirrors model::resume in rs/moq-net, including per-reader delivered records and group recovery. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Ready-for-review pass complete.
(written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
A replaced copy kept only the groups it had at the swap, so a group the old route got after the swap, already superseded when the new route's subscription started, reached nobody at a zero budget. Now a replaced copy keeps delivering until the serving copy delivers its first group F, then is bounded at max(newest handed out, F - 1). Same rule in rs/moq-net and js/net, with the deterministic regression test in both. Also plans the Rust port of JS's ordered-read fix as quest/m1/resume-ordered.md. When a Rust subscriber polls only datagrams and each successive same-epoch copy has an unread group, this predicate remains true for every bounded replaced copy, so every route swap leaves another subscription and cache in self.copies. A peer that repeatedly migrates the route can therefore grow retained state without bound. Fresh evidence after the prior fix is that setting until stops each old copy from accepting newer groups, but neither deduplicates nor caps the copies whose cached groups satisfy this check; preserve later group reads with a bounded or consolidated backlog instead of retaining one route copy per migration.

Cancel the served-copy lookup with the caller
When a track is still being read from source A while source B is current and A's metadata answer stalls, aborting the hold passed to resolveTrackInfo cannot stop this preliminary lookup because #askServed receives only B's retirement signal. A canceled IETF TRACK_STATUS request therefore remains pending and keeps its metadata demand and retained source alive until A answers or the route changes, so repeated canceled requests can accumulate state. Pass the caller's hold through this lookup as well.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
Resolves the JS group handover (#5836): the resume reader keeps both its groups_read tracking and the subscription floor seed. JS front readers gain the bounds check Rust's resume path already has: the resume source reports the serving copy's largest only within the reader's cursor and wakes when it moves, with a regression test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Main's held-copy fallback (#5836) positioned the group at the reader's frame alone; route it through the same check as the serving copy, so a reader that inflates a compressed group takes the prefix it needs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Resolve the conflict with #5836's websocket.protocols toward the shape the maintainer chose: a top-level `versions` list of version names, mirroring Rust's `Client::with_versions` and the FFI `versions`, mapped to ALPNs for WebTransport and the WebSocket fallback. `webtransport.protocols` and the unreleased `websocket.protocols` are removed and throw when passed. A peer without an ALPN is offered only the named SETUP-negotiated versions. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Completes JS track handover (quest file deleted here).
Summary
A
js/nettrack subscription now survives its broadcast's route moving to another provider with the same epoch (e.g. a relay migration after GOAWAY). It mirrorsmodel::resumeinrs/moq-net. Both languages also change how long a replaced route keeps feeding (see Replaced copies below):Origin.Requesting.activeis a logical front (resume.tsFront) instead of a clone of the route's broadcast. A same-epoch route taking over re-sources it; the handle stays the same object. Epochless routes behave exactly as before.max(newest handed out, F - 1). Before, it was bounded at its newest group at the swap. A group the old route got after the swap, already superseded when the new route's subscription started, then reached nobody at a zero budget. A reader that has read no groups bounds a replaced copy at what it has instead (Rust keeps it for those buffered groups, as main does; JS lets it go at once).Track.Subscriber(direct or resumed) keeps an interval set of handed-out sequences, so a re-created group or one a second route delivers is handed out once. Gaps past the budget are forgotten, so only gaps within it cost memory (same bound as Rust'san_endless_track_with_gaps_stays_bounded).info()already recorded what the track is.test/drain. Runs at zero latency budget with one request and one subscription, read for the whole run. The publisher mints an epoch. The relays and A's cluster dial offer lite-07 (epochs only travel there), and so do the JS sessions over WebSocket. Asserts every group arrived exactly once andactivenever changed.js/watchandjs/hangonly mirrorrequest.active, so on a same-epoch swap they now keep their catalog and track subscriptions. No change was needed there.Public API impact
Origin.Requesting.active: keeps the same handle across a same-epoch route swap. Code watching it to resubscribe no longer sees a change; restarts still change it.Track.Subscriber: hands each group sequence out at most once (a re-created group was delivered twice before).Group.Consumer.closed: now settles once its reader callsclose(), even with unread frames (it never settled before).Connectionoptionwebsocket.protocols, mirroringwebtransport.protocols. The default list still leaves outmoq-lite-07-wip; an unsupported entry rejectsconnect().moq-net(and so the relay): a replaced route's copy stays subscribed, unbounded, until the new route's copy delivers its first group. The end bound then goes out with the usual subscription update. Behavior only.Decisions
Settled by the maintainer:
websocket.protocolsstays public, mirroringwebtransport.protocols.test/drainneeds lite-07 (the only version that carries epochs) over WebSocket, because its stand-in for DNS is a TCP proxy.test drainfor the startup failure. It got no groups through relay A before any migration, and did not reproduce in 40 instrumented runs. If it recurs in nightly, add per-group tracing to the harness under a follow-up quest. (The recent nightlytest drainfailures on main are a different issue: relay A not logging that every session left.)max(newest, F - 1). The deterministic probe stays as a regression test in both languages.doc/conceptand the lite draft only promise resuming "from the first frame it lacks", which this makes more true, so neither changes.recvGrouppromises the lowest buffered group first, so the quest covers both orders.Follow-up quest-plan prompt (paper trail):
