fix(net)!: report a reader's largest within its local bounds - #5924
Conversation
track::Subscriber and track::Ordered largest()/poll_largest() report the largest location within the bounds set_groups set, instead of the track's. Past a cap of ..N they report the newest cached group below N; below the floor, nothing. Moving the bounds wakes a parked poll and reports again within the new ones, even below the last report. The resume cursor passes the reader's bounds to the serving copy. The JS Track.Subscriber and Track.Ordered largest() follow the same rules. moq-c's raw reader lifts the previous update's cap before reading the edge its relative ranges count from. Record the maintainer's change of the set_groups rename to limit in the serve quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The track's settled end ended a capped reader's largest stream even while the group it reports under the cap could still take frames. Past the cap, the stream now ends on the track's settled end only once that group has finished; the track closing still ends it. A group finishing bumps the largest revision so a capped reader wakes on it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

JS bumped a written signal on every sink per finish, and every parked largest() reader raced it. Share one signal across the sinks and race it only while capped below the largest. Sweep tracks x subscribers in a new js/net largest bench (nightly), and add a Rust track_largest_finish bench over subscribers: there a finish already wakes each parked reader through its settled-end park on the track state, as on main, and the revision bump measures no extra cost. Racing promise.then(() => false) against an already resolved true always picks true, so every pending assertion passed even when largest() resolved. Record settlement with a flag after a macrotask settle instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A reader's largest() reports the track's largest only while it is within its bounds, and only once the track's feed is live: never a cached group standing in for it past the cap, and never an idle copy's leftover edge. Drops the cache-derived fallback and its revision counter. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A capped reader's largest() no longer reports the newest cached group under its cap; past the cap or below the floor it reports nothing. This removes the JS written signal, hooks.groupFinished, the timeline scan, and both largest finish benchmarks. Adds the track-live quest for a public live signal. When a track finishes while its current largest is outside this reader's bounds, this poll returns None with seen unchanged; if the same reader later widens its bounds, newer becomes populated and a subsequent poll returns that old position after the stream already terminated. This violates the documented None-on-end contract and is mirrored in js/net/src/track.ts, where widening after undefined likewise exposes the ended track's largest. Record terminal state per reader so later bounds changes cannot resurrect the stream.

moq-video, moq-audio and moq-cli play positioned a latest-only reader with a one-shot noop poll of largest(). On a warm relay copy still waiting on its source that poll is pending, so they set no floor and replayed the cached backlog once the copy went live. Keeps both Unreleased entries in js/net/MIGRATE.md and rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md: this PR's largest() note and the lite-07 SUBSCRIBE_DROP note. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Problem
track::Subscriber::largest()andtrack::Ordered::largest()reported the track's largest location even when the reader had capped itself withset_groups(..N). A reader that skips to its newest group, as the data consumers in #5677 do withset_groups(largest..), jumped past its own cap, and the omitted end then removed the cap entirely. Separately, a relay's idle copy reported the largest an ended feed left, so a player could start from stale state while a fresh upstream subscription was still starting. The JSTrack.Subscriber.largest()/Track.Ordered.largest()had the bounds gap too.Semantics
The maintainer decided on 2026-10-19 that
largest()never reports ephemeral, cache-derived state. It reports only upstream-confirmed state: the source's reported largest (SUBSCRIBE_OK / SUBSCRIBE_START) and what its live feed delivered since.largest()/poll_largest()reports the track's largest while it is within the reader's local floor and cap (asset_groups/setGroupsset them), as before.set_groups, and the crate'sstart_at/raise_start_to/end_at) wakes a parkedpoll_largest, which reports the largest once it is within the new bounds and newer than the last report. The largest is a running max, so new bounds hold the current edge or nothing, never one below the last report: a cap moved below the largest stays pending, andwhile let Some(l) = largest().await { set_groups(l.group..) }does not spin.poll_largest(track::Producer,track::Consumer,Subscriber,Ordered) waits until the track's feed is live (Feed::Live), or until nothing more can move its largest (sealed, aborted, or settled), so an idle relay copy reports nothing until its new upstream answer shows, even one that declared an end it has not reached (Codex). Cached groups are still served meanwhile. A local producer is live from creation, so it is unaffected. JS has no idle copies: its largest is only ever reported or written by the live feed, so it needs no gate.Approach
moq-net). The cache'spoll_largest/take_largesttake crate-privateBoundsand filter the existingLargest(a running max of the source's report and frame writes, not pruned by expiry) to them. The sharedpoll_largestintrack.rsfirst polls the track state for live, then the cache, then the settled end. The resume cursor passes the reader's bounds to the serving copy, and seeds its floor from the subscription's absolute floor as a plain cursor does (Codex).Subscriberkeeps the last report and the polling task'sWaker, which a bounds change wakes.@moq/net).Subscriber.largest()checks#state.largestagainst the cursor and races the largest, closed, settled-end, and cursor signals. A front's resumed reader (feat(net): resume JS tracks across same-epoch route swaps; keep a replaced route feeding until its successor delivers #5836) gets the same check in the resume source, which reports the serving copy's largest only within the reader's cursor and wakes when it moves, mirroring Rust's resume path.largest_withinand the cache revision counter, JSwrittensignal, hooks.groupFinished, the timeline scan) and both largest-finish benchmarks. With no stand-in, a write that leaves the largest in place wakes nobody, so there is no new fan-out to measure.moq-c's raw reader re-applies each subscription update withset_groups, so it reads the edge its relative ranges count from off the unboundedtrack::Consumerrather than its own bounded largest (Codex). It polls that edge synchronously, so under the live gate it now applies an update's wire preferences at once and holds a relative range's local bounds until the edge reports, re-polled with the task's waiter, and holds group delivery meanwhile so no group lands under the old floor (Codex, CodeRabbit). A floor an earlier update put above the edge still can't be lowered, becauseset_groupsonly raises the floor, as on main; the assigning floor in the rename quest owns that. The positioning readers that used a one-shot nooppoll_largest(moq-video and moq-audio decode consumers, moq-cli play, moq-room chat) pended on a warm copy still waiting on its source and replayed its backlog, so they now wait forlargest()before their first read; the wait ends with the track, and subscribing itself never blocks (Codex, maintainer's choice). moq-room'schat::Subscriber::newstays synchronous and waits in its firstpoll_recv, as the JS chat reader does inrecv. A repo-wide sweep found no other remote positioning caller: moq-json window, moq-hls history, moq-relay fetch, moq-gst and the JS json/flate/room readers already awaitlargest(); the bindings reach it only through moq-c; the noop pollers left (moq-muxcontainer::Producer, the moq-json snapshot producer, the moq-cli publish and moq-mux TS programs announce gates) read local producers, which are live from creation; and the moq-mux container consumer'slive()start polls with its real waiter and falls back to the newest arrived group, as on main. The wire publishers answer frompoll_live,peek_largestandlatest_sequence, which this PR leaves alone.quest/m1/public-model/serve.mdrecords the 2026-10-19 decisions (range naming, floor as a local bound, upstream-only largest). The newquest/m1/track-live.mdcovers a public live signal (poll_live/live()) so callers can skip old cached groups while a fresh upstream subscription starts. It is not exported here.Public API and wire impact
