feat(data)!: data consumers return each value's timestamp - #5677
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
Rust JSON/Flate next returns Timed values, snapshots add latest, and mux wrappers mirror reads. Catalog/stats callers retain latest-state behavior. Both snapshot bugs reproduced on base; 229 JSON/Flate tests passed before final compressed-cursor strengthening. Wider Rust caller check in progress. FFI/C/bindings held for exact timestamp representation and C read API decision; full scoped check and all-language interop not run yet. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
The independent Rust caller suite passed 1813 tests with 3 skipped. All-target compile and docs passed; lint exposed lost-group tracing becoming unused, so preserve the existing diagnostics. Final check-test on this source is pending. FFI/C and wrappers still await their public representation/read contract; no claim of full quest completion. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <noreply@openai.com>
moq-ffi JSON consumers return MoqJsonValue (value plus timestamp_us) and the snapshot consumer gains latest(). C's moq_json_value carries the timestamp, and the Python, Go, Swift, Kotlin, Dart and C++ wrappers expose it. Fix the teleop example, added on main, for the Timed reads. Preserve the timestamp's original scale across FFI
For timed tracks whose scale does not divide evenly into microseconds, this conversion truncates the frame time before exposing it to every native binding. For example, a value at tick 1 on a 90 kHz track becomes 11 µs, so an application republishing the returned timestamp cannot reproduce the original tick; this defeats the stated synchronization/relay use case and bakes a lossy field into all binding APIs. Return the timestamp's raw value and scale rather than converting through as_micros().

Agreed on the goal, deferred on the vehicle. The maintainer chose exact { value, scale } timestamps for every binding, not just this record, so the change lands first in a separate binding-wide PR that adds an exact timestamp record to moq-ffi and converts MoqFrame, MoqDatagram, and producer arguments across moq-c and every wrapper. This PR is held until that lands, then switches MoqJsonValue, moq_json_value, and the wrappers to it. The microsecond field here matches the current FFI convention in the meantime and is recorded as interim in the description.

Update: the maintainer decided this PR lands first with the microsecond field, so it no longer waits. It matches every other binding timestamp today (MoqFrame, MoqDatagram, producer arguments), and the rounding is now documented on MoqJsonValue, moq_json_value, and each wrapper's Timed/Value: rounded down to a whole microsecond, so a 90 kHz tick may not survive a read and republish exactly. The exact { value, scale } record for every binding timestamp, this one included, is planned as its own quest in /quest/m1/binding-timestamps.md (#5890).

Serialize JSON before acquiring the global state lock
When a C JSON consumer receives a large value, Rust evaluates the State::lock() receiver before the JsonValue::new(value) argument, so the global libmoq mutex remains held while serde_json::to_string serializes the entire document. The previous implementation deliberately serialized before taking this lock; the same regression also appears in run_json_stream, and concurrent C operations now stall behind payload size. Construct the JsonValue first, then lock only for the slab insertion.

Fixed in c39da9b: both run_json_snapshot and run_json_stream now build the JsonValue before taking State::lock(), so the lock only covers the slab insert.

Document the changed consumers in every binding guide
This changes every binding's JSON consumer return type and adds snapshot latest(), but only the Go binding guide was updated; doc/lib/{py,swift,kt,dart,c}/index.md still omit the new timed value shape and read semantics. Users entering through those primary guides cannot discover how to consume the breaking API, despite the scoped surface-change rule requiring each of these guides to be updated in the same PR.

Preserve the subscriber's group cap in latest
When a caller caps the subscriber with set_groups(..N) before constructing this consumer, calling set_groups(latest..) here removes that upper bound because an omitted end explicitly makes the range unbounded. If the track has a newer group at or beyond N, latest() reads it and subsequent next() calls continue beyond the caller's requested range; the same regression exists in moq-flate's snapshot consumer. Raise only the start floor while retaining the existing upper bound.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed: set_groups(latest..) goes through end_at(Unbounded), so latest() drops a local set_groups(..N) cap set before the consumer took the track, in both moq-json and moq-flate. moq-net has no public way to raise only the floor (raise_start_to is pub(crate)), so the fix needs a moq-net API choice; raised with the maintainer rather than fixed in this round.

Fixed in 7703f15, per the maintainer's choice above. track::Subscriber and track::Ordered gain a read-only bounds(). latest() in moq-json and moq-flate takes its target from the bounded poll_largest (#5924) and calls set_groups((Included(largest), end)) with the current end, so a cap set before the consumer took the track holds. The regression is latest_keeps_a_cap_set_before_the_consumer in both crates. It fails with set_groups(largest..).

Ignore datagrams when choosing the latest snapshot group
When a peer sends a datagram whose sequence exceeds the newest snapshot group, track::Ordered::poll_largest reports that datagram because the API tracks the newest group or datagram. Treating its sequence as a group target then discards the readable snapshot and raises the group floor past it, so latest() can block or skip every valid state until an even higher group arrives; the same logic affects moq-flate. Choose the newest group specifically, or reject mixed-channel snapshot tracks, instead of using the track-wide largest position.

Agreed: a datagram takes a sequence and advances poll_largest, so the floor rose past every group and latest() stalled. Fixed in 4cf13a9: latest() now drains the groups poll_next_group already has and keeps the newest. That ignores datagrams and stays inside any cap without reading or moving the bounds, so the bounds() getter is dropped. Regression latest_ignores_datagrams in moq-json and moq-flate fails on 710c025.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
A datagram shares the sequence space and advances the track's largest, so latest() raised the floor past every group and stalled. Drain the groups the reader already holds and keep the newest instead: it ignores datagrams and keeps a caller's cap without touching the bounds, so the moq-net bounds() getter has no consumer and goes. Problem
JSON and binary data consumers discarded each frame's timestamp, so an application could not carry data onto another track or sync it with video at the time it was published. Snapshot reads also collapsed every buffered state into the newest, so a reader following a playhead lost the 9s state once 11s was buffered.
Approach
Rust core. moq-json and moq-flate snapshot and stream consumers, and the moq-mux JSON/binary wrappers, return
moq_net::Timed<T>(.valueplus optional.at, the frame's exact timestamp and scale). Snapshot consumers get two reads:next()/poll_next()yields every state in order. Groups older than the subscription'smax_delayare still skipped, so a slow reader stays bounded.latest()/poll_latest()skips to the newest state (the old behavior). Catalog and stats readers use it. It drains the groups the reader already has and keeps the newest, so it never touches the reader's bounds: a cap the caller set holds, and datagrams (which share the sequence space but are not groups) cannot strand it.The mux wrappers refuse
lateston a stream-mode track (UnsupportedMode) rather than silently drop lossless records. This matches@moq/jsonand@moq/flate, which already returnTimed<T>with the samenext()/latest().Bindings. moq-ffi JSON consumers return a
MoqJsonValue { value, timestamp_us }record, andMoqJsonSnapshotConsumergainslatest(). Each wrapper exposes it in its own convention:moq.json.Timed(value, timestamp)timedelta | None*json.Timed{Value, Timestamp}*time.DurationJson.Timed<Value>(value, timestampUs)UInt64?values()emitsValue;valuesAs<T>()emitsTimed<T>(value, timestamp)Duration?moq_json.Value(MoqJsonValue)int? timestampUsmoq::JsonValuestd::optional<uint64_t>moq_json_valuegainstimestamp_us+timestamp_presentmoq_framePython, Go, and Swift snapshot consumers add
latest()/Latest(); Kotlin, Dart, and C++ get the generatedlatest(). C keeps its callback API: a snapshot callback now fires for each state (thenextread) instead of only the newest.Binding timestamps are microseconds, like every other binding timestamp today (
MoqFrame,MoqDatagram, producer arguments). They are rounded down to a whole microsecond, documented on each field: a tick on a track like 90 kHz may not survive a read and republish exactly. Rust and JS keep the exact scale.Decisions
Settled by the maintainer.
timestamp_us: Option<u64>microseconds, matching today'sMoqFrame,MoqDatagram, and producer arguments, and document the rounding. The exact{ value, scale }conversion of every binding timestamp,MoqJsonValueincluded, is its own quest (exact timestamps in every binding, planned in quest(m1): plan exact timestamps in every binding #5890) and lands after this PR.next) and gains the timestamp fields.next/latestAPI to C. No other C consumer pulls, so this would invent a new lifecycle.Timed/Valuerecord (value plus timestamp), mirroring RustTimed<T>and JS.latest()and a caller's group cap (Codex P2 on64f5d2716; maintainer, 2026-10-19)latest()no longer moves the bounds, so the read-onlybounds()getter chosen here had no consumer and is dropped. The alternatives (a publicraise_start_to, an omitted end keeping the cap, documenting the reset) are moot for the same reason.latest()(mirrors@moq/json/@moq/flate).largest()in Rust, FFI and every wrapper. Diverges from JS, and the track'slargest()returns a position, not a value.latest()(Codex on710c0251a: a datagram advancespoll_largest, so the floor rose past every group and the read stalled). Pending maintainer confirmation.poll_next_groupalready has and keep the newest. Ignores datagrams, respects the cap without reading it, and needs no moq-net API, sobounds()is dropped (nothing reads it; serve.md'swith_rangemodel can add a getter when a caller needs one).bounds()anyway as the read half of serve.md's range model. Exported with no consumer.Impact
Timed<T>; snapshotnextyields intermediate states. Uselatestfor collapse-to-newest.next()returnsMoqJsonValue(or the wrapper'sTimed) instead of a string; snapshotnext()no longer collapses. None, both compression modes, group rollover, latest timestamp pairing, and a shared compressed next/latest cursor (Rust), plus timestamp andlatest()round trips in the FFI, C, Python, Go, Swift, Kotlin, and Dart tests.latest_keeps_a_cap_set_before_the_consumer(moq-json, moq-flate): a reader capped at..5reads 3, then 4 after more groups land, never past the cap. Fails with the oldset_groups(largest..).latest_ignores_datagrams(moq-json, moq-flate): two groups then a datagram;latest()still returns the second state. Fails on710c0251a.4cf13a98b0:just checkpassed; Swift skipped (no toolchain on Linux, covered by the macOS job).just test interop --allpassed on710c0251a; the last round touched only Rust-core consumers and docs, so it was not re-run.Follow-ups
