feat(moq-net): serve each subscriber its own ranges, with time anchors - #5929
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A subscriber now reads only the groups its own Subscription::ranges cover, resolved where it is served and again whenever they are replaced, instead of reading every group the aggregate brings in. A new Anchor::Time(pts) resolves from the cached groups' starts; an untimed track refuses it. The drop scan names only sequences inside the reader's ranges, so the SUBSCRIBE_DROP accounting can reuse it. moq-c and moq-mux stop re-resolving relative starts on their own. moq-ffi, moq-c, and the bindings carry the time anchor, and the FFI update now reports a refused one. Adds track_range_serving, which found and fixed two per-range walks per hand-out. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The resolved window and its bookkeeping live behind one box so every reader that embeds a cursor stays its old size. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughSubscriptions now filter reads to groups covered by their own ranges. The track model resolves absolute, relative, and time-based anchors into group windows and rejects time anchors on untimed tracks. FFI conversions and consumer updates propagate conversion and update errors through Rust, C, Dart, Go, Kotlin, Python, and Swift interfaces. Tests, migration notes, documentation, benchmarks, and raw-track update handling were also updated. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to

moq_consume_track_update queued updates for the reader task, which dropped a TimestampMismatch, so a time anchor on an untimed track silently kept the old ranges. Once subscribed, updates now go through the track's Control and fail at the call; one made before SUBSCRIBE_OK applies once it arrives and a refusal then ends the consumer. …atagrams too A copy joined mid-group stamps a later frame than the group's start, so it could convince a time end that the group started past it. A refused cursor also read and discarded datagrams instead of returning its refusal. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…vers The arrival walk passed groups below the floor without parking them, so widening the ranges (or a SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE lowering Group Start) could never serve a cached group that arrived before the ones already read. A relay could not fold a second subscription into one by lowering the start. The cursor now remembers the highest floor its walk applied. When the floor drops below it, the cached groups in between are looked up by sequence and parked, so each update costs only the groups it re-offers, and the subscriber's delivered set keeps any from going out twice. This reverses #4940's no-rewind rule; its two publisher tests now pin the new contract. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…ol updates A resumed reader resolved a relative range only on the floor-less first copy, so once a route switch let that copy go, replaced ranges never resolved and `next_in_range` stayed at `from`. It now resolves them on whichever ready copy answers for them, taking the resolution from before the copy's failover cap raised it. Ranges replaced through a `Control` reached a cursor's servable window only on its next read, so a held group's expiry was judged against the old ranges. The cursor now publishes its cap beside the window, and a `Control` replacing the ranges republishes the window at once. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

… as one value A read's drift snapshot could be taken from a window still waiting on its first group, which serves everything, just before that group arrived and settled it. A zero-delay `Absolute(0)..Relative(0)` then judged group 0 against group 1, which it never reads, and skipped it. Both read paths now take the snapshot again once the first arrival settles the window. A `Control` republishing the ranges and the cursor moving its cap could interleave and leave a servable cut from one writer's stale input. The published value now holds both inputs, the window's runs by ranges revision and the cap, and each writer replaces only its own and derives the servable under the same write. Keep both Unreleased MIGRATE.md entries (JSON deltas and #5929 ranges) in dart, go, kt, py, swift, moq-c and moq-ffi. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Keeps both MIGRATE entries beside main's per-subscriber ranges (#5929). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Port the peek/take reservation onto per-subscriber ranges (#5929): a widening's owed group stays owed until a taking read. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The range filter from #5929 hands its owed groups out as handles, and its tests finish or reveal through a handle, under the one-writer rule. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re-ports the time anchors #5929 split out onto main's shape, through every binding. An unsettled time end now walks the groups forward from where it stopped: a starts index carries the newest group known to start inside it past a stalled one, the first group that may still start is the only one read on speculation, and settling resumes at the first sequence not yet accounted for. A failover cap never replaces an unsettled time end, and a datagram is judged by its own timestamp. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
#5929 (fe722ce) doubled the instructions per track subscribe (3,233 to 6,950 in the track_subscriber_join loop under callgrind): Cursor::new published a placeholder window and then ran update_servable, whose closure ran twice and built the window's runs into a fresh RangeInclusiveSet each time, plus one more set per cap. Every join paid about five BTreeMap and three Arc allocations for a window that is almost always one run. Build the published window directly in Cursor::new, resolve the runs once per update, and keep them as a Servable, which holds a single run inline and caps it in place. A subscribe now takes 4,492 instructions; what remains over the pre-#5929 cost is the Window itself. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
#5929 made each subscription read only its own ranges; moq.h still described the aggregate read. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
First half of
quest/m1/subscribe-ranges/dynamic.md: serve each subscriber its own ranges. The other half (range requests ontrack::Dynamicreplacingrequested_group/fetch_group) stays in the quest; see the decisions. Time anchors were split out to their own PR, starting from thequest/m1/subscribe-ranges/time-endbranch (quest). What changes
track::Subscriberreads only the groups its ownSubscription::rangescover, resolved where it is served and again wheneverupdatereplaces them. Before, they only set where reads started, and a subscriber read every later group the aggregate brought in.set_groupscap holding nothing: no parked consumer, no abort watch. Before, a narrow reader under an open aggregate parked one of each per produced group. A move of the floor, ranges, or cap owes the sequence spans it newly admits (a few ranges, never groups), and the walk re-offers what the cache still holds there, lowest first, throughstate.lookup.range. Each cached group in a widened span is visited once, so a widening costs O(log n + k) for its k groups, never the cache or the audience. A group evicted meanwhile is filled upstream by range, as any miss is. A finished track now ends a reader with nothing left in range rather than holding it open for a cap that might rise; failover still counts a group past a copy's local cap as unread (has_unread_group).Group Start) now serves the cached groups below the old floor, even ones that arrived before the groups already read, so a relay can fold a second subscription into one. This reverses fix(moq-net): serve a quiet catalog after a resume floor is cleared #4940's no-rewind rule;a_widening_update_serves_a_cached_group_below_the_old_floorandthe_end_drops_below_a_lowered_startpin the new contract, and the lite draft's SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE section states it. Cost bound: this is the widening above, so an update costs O(log n + k) for the k groups it re-offers. A peer alternating the floor pays that per update, bounded by the cache in the span, and the subscriber's delivered set keeps any group from going out twice. It re-offers only groups the arrival walk could have read: never fetched backfill, and never a group a route still withholds untilreveal_group.Windownow reports each range resolved, and the clamp raises or caps that resolution instead of substituting the bound. A start not resolved yet (such as a range updated while the replacement is still pending) keeps its own anchor rather than becoming the floor, and the copy raises its local start to that floor when it answers, so a group the reader skipped below it is never handed out late. The reader keeps its ranges as a copy resolved them, before that copy's failover cap raised them, so its floor andnext_in_rangeoutlive that copy and resolve after a route switch.set_groupscap, so a range behind the live edge is judged against its own newest group: a zero-delay0..2on a track holding 0..=10 now serves group 1 instead of skipping it for group 2, which it never reads. Each run is judged by its own groups: a gap between ranges is never a drift edge, and a single run keeps its lower bound, at one lookup like a plain cap. AControlreplacing the ranges republishes the window at once, so a held group is judged against them before the cursor next reads; the window and theset_groupscap are published as one value, so neither writer can leave a mismatched pair.poll_dropnames only sequences the reader asked for. This is the piece SUBSCRIBE_DROP can reuse.RawReaderthat fix(net)!: report a reader's largest within its local bounds #5924 added onmain, which counted back from the track's largest and held reads until it was live, gives way to passing the ranges to the model, which resolves them where it serves. moq-mux's container consumer starts at the newtrack::Subscriber::floor()instead of adopting the first arrival, which newest-first delivery made the latest, and walks over a gap between ranges at once viatrack::Subscriber::next_in_rangeinstead of waiting out its budget (forever on an open track) for groups it never gets.track_range_servingdrains one reader over disjoint ranges, swept over range count and span. It found two per-range walks per hand-out (the re-offer scan and the settled check), plus an O(ranges) compare on every poll; all three are now O(1) per hand-out, using a ranges revision on the preferences channel. The remaining dip at 256 ranges by 64 groups tracks total cached groups, not ranges.track_range_widening(replacingtrack_parked_abort) widens one reader by 8 cached groups mid-cache and back, swept over cached groups (64 to 16384) and readers beside it (1 to 1024): 3.9 to 4.1 µs per widening at 1 reader, 3.9 to 4.5 µs at 1024, so flat in readers and logarithmic in the cache.Public API impact
