feat(mux)!: clock a declared catalog reorder per group in TS, MKV and FLV - #6453
Conversation
Quest-Claim: 8afdbb190a23e507
Checkpoint signed group-local scheduling and bounded payload retention for progressive AVC with a declared SPS depth. Preserve the published-catalog compatibility decision and the unfinished full exporter/producer rollout. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <codex@openai.com>
# Conflicts: # rs/moq-mux/MIGRATE.md # rs/moq-mux/src/container/mkv/export.rs
Absent reorder keeps the inferred clock; an explicit declaration, zero included, decodes each group from its own frames. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The H.264 and H.265 importers copy the SPS's reorder depth into the catalog, hold the first declaration, and refuse a deeper one. @moq/publish declares 0 and refuses reordered encoder output. The finished decode-order quest is replaced by a follow-up bounding the inferred clock. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
moq-video advertises its probed rendition as a hint, so the first keyframe's SPS confirms the declared depth instead of adding it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Main removed `export ts --sync` (#6554), so the counted clock, its tests and the sync docs go; the declared clock and its legs test stay, the latter on a B-pyramid Live re-added to the timing harness. Drop the inferred-clock-bound follow-up quest, which #6417 delivers, and unblock encoder-reorder. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
FLV read through `poll_read`, which swallows group ends and cuts, so a group shorter than its declared `reorder` stayed held until the next keyframe or the track's end. Read events, as MKV and TS do, and flush the clock on a group end or cut. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

TS export trims open-GOP leading pictures a join or recovery orphans before they reach the decode clock, so on a declared rendition the rest of their group decoded at different slots than on an export that kept them. Hold a trimmed picture's slot on the declared clock and drop it at release. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The shift was fixed at the header, so a catalog that declared `reorder` later put its first group's leading DTS before zero near the timeline's start and failed the export. Raise the shift to the deeper declaration; it never shrinks, so tag times keep increasing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A source that repeats a frame's timestamp made the encoder emit a chunk at the same time, which the `reorder: 0` guard treated as reordering and aborted the track. Skip the repeat at input; a backward timestamp still fails the track. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Main finished broadcast-epoch, program-cap, and decode-order, and moved drop-web-transport-trait to m1. Drops this branch's edits to the finished quests, keeps its m0 Goal trim (without the CONNECT-header bound, landed in #6601), the Route::auth keep in main's rewritten net-exports, and the OBS decode timing child in release-audit, and retargets decode-order links to #6453. Problem
TS, MKV and FLV export author each video frame's DTS from timestamp history: what the exporter read before, the catalog
jitter, and a delay that only grows. Two exporters that joined or lost groups at different points can clock the same frame apart, and flat or backward PTS can hold frames without bound. Published catalogs carry no reorder depth, so absence cannot be read as "never reorders" without refusing media thathang-v0.21.16publishes today (the fMP4 controlunwrapped_samples_present_at_their_composition_time).Approach
An explicit declaration contract that keeps published absence behavior:
rs/hangandjs/hangadd an optional videoreorder(u8): the most frames that can precede one in decode order and follow it in presentation, the unit of H.264max_num_reorder_framesand HEVCsps_max_num_reorder_pics.0declares none, which is not the same as absent.DeclaredClock(rs/moq-mux/src/container/decode.rs) clocks one group: its n-th frame decodes at the group's (n -reorder)-th presentation slot, and its firstreorderframes one tick apart just before the earliest slot. It holds at mostreorderframes, then releases each frame as it is read, and refuses deeper reordering.declared()refuses a depth above the codec level's DPB (H.264 Table A-1, H.265 MaxDpbSize - 1) or a nonzero depth on VP8, VP9 or AV1.DecodeClockuntouched. A TS DTS before zero wraps in the 33-bit field, and an open-GOP leading picture TS trims on a join or recovery still holds its slot, so the rest of its group decodes where it does on an export that kept it. FLV clocks in milliseconds and shifts every tag by the deepest declaredreorder, since its timestamps are unsigned; a deeper declaration after the header raises the shift, which never shrinks.@moq/publishdeclares0, skips a capture frame that repeats the last timestamp, and aborts the track if WebCodecs ever emits a chunk at or behind the previous one.draft-lcurley-moq-hangspecifies the field, the publisher's MUSTs, the consumer algorithm and the refusals;doc/concept/hang.mdfollows.Tests: zero depth, open-GOP leading pictures, slots before zero, per-group reset, level validation, malformed PTS retaining at most
reorderpayloads, TS legs joined at different groups with a group stalled authoring identical DTS, FLV and TS group-cut invariance and refusal, an FLV group shorter than its depth leaving whole when it ends on an open track, TS leading pictures trimmed at the start keeping their slots, an FLV declaration after the header, a repeated capture timestamp in@moq/publish, importer declaration and the hold/refuse rule. The fMP4 control still passes.Impact
reorderin Rust and JS. Additive; an older consumer ignores it and keeps inferring decode times. No catalog version bump.hang::catalog::VideoConfig::reorderandmoq_mux::catalog::VideoHint::reorder, both on#[non_exhaustive]structs. No other new exports.moq-mux): importers now declarereorder, so H.264/H.265 exports switch to per-group clocking; a frame reordered deeper than declared, or an unreachable depth, ends the export; a deeper SPS mid-track fails the import. A group's leading pictures now leave up toreorderframes later than under inferred timing (presentation is unchanged), whicha_congested_path_sheds_what_it_made_latenow accounts for by comparing a whole group's least lag at each end.moq-mux): the H.264 and H.265 importers declare the catalog's videoreorderfrom the SPS (max_num_reorder_frameson a frame-only H.264 SPS,sps_max_num_reorder_picson H.265) and keep the first declaration for the track; a later SPS that reorders deeper fails the import. For a rendition that declaresreorder, the MPEG-TS, Matroska, and FLV exports derive each group's decode times from that group's frames alone, ignoringjitterandframerate. A group's firstreorderframes decode just before its earliest presentation time, so a DTS can precede zero: MPEG-TS wraps it in the 33-bit field, and FLV shifts every timestamp by the deepest declaredreorderin milliseconds. A frame reordered deeper than declared, or areorderthe codec level cannot reach, now ends the export instead of moving its timestamps. Correct the source, or leavereorderunset to keep inferring decode times from timestamps as before.@moq/publish: declaresreorder: 0; reordered encoder output aborts the track.Validation
On b68685e (main merged, which removed
export ts --syncin moq-dev/moq#6554, so the counted clock and its sync tests left with it; the declared legs test stays on a B-pyramid timing harness):just check: PASS (3,725 + 519 + 226 Rust tests, JS, drafts, quests, docs).just test interop --all: PASS (on 33923b1; later commits touch only TS/FLV export,@moq/publish's encoder and the draft changelog).quest check --base origin/main: PASS.unwrapped_samples_present_at_their_composition_timepasses unchanged.Re-merged main through 70ad3971c4 after the queue dropped this PR on quest README conflicts (main had also finished the HLS admission, AUTH listener, and shared-parser entries, so both lists drop them and
Decode order).just check(all butflake, which this sandbox cannot build) andjust test interop --allpassed before the last main commit; after it,cargo nextest run -p moq-gst -p moq-mux(1915),just drafts check, andquest checkpassed.Decisions
reorder, including0, bounds it.pop/pop_counted/FLV'sauthor_dtsis dropped: absence must keep today's DTS.reorder+ 1 are known: the same DTS as holdingreorderframes, with less latency.reorder(set at the header, raised if a later declaration is deeper) instead of rebasing at the first DTS, so the timeline does not depend on where the export joined.MaxDpbFramesfallback, and publishing a new rendition on deepening are dropped: absence is safe under this contract, and a deeper SPS fails loud instead.inferred-clock-boundfollow-up quest and the release audit'sDecode orderentry.quest/m1/ts-reliability/decode-order.mdand deletes it. Main's copy says absentreordermeans 0; the maintainer's decision above (absent keeps the inferred clock) supersedes that, so its absent-means-0, offset-inference and new-rendition items are dropped, not left as remaining work.moq_mux::catalog::VideoHintgainsreorder, filled like its other fields, becausers/moq-videoadvertises its probed rendition as a hint and the first keyframe must confirm it rather than add the depth. No FFI field: no binding consumer yet.Follow-ups
reorder. Main is merged here: the inferredDecodeClockkeeps fix(mux): bound what the decode clock holds in MKV and TS export #6417's arrival-based settling unchanged, and the MKV/TS exporters pass each frame's arrival to it beside this PR's per-groupDeclaredClock.Requiredlink to this quest is dropped here and its plan points at this PR, so it is ready once this merges.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
