feat(net)!: broadcasts have no finished state - #6660
A broadcast has no finished state anymore. Online means announced, the end of content is a track FIN (for hang, the catalog's), and how long a finished broadcast stays up for late readers is app policy (moq_mux::Linger, moq-dev/moq#6636).
Changes
moq-net: removed broadcast::Producer::finish, Finish (linger, wait), finished-only supersession (Consumer::supersede, Routes::superseded, Announcer::superseded, the finished/superseded broadcast state), and TrackWeak::hold_finished. Epoch routing (moq-dev/moq#6452) is unchanged.
Relay proof first: the new relay_upstream_close integration test shows a relay keeps delivering a finished track to subscribers it already has after the upstream session closes or aborts, on lite-03 through lite-07-wip and moq-transport 14/17/22. It caught a bug: on lite, a session teardown aborted subscriptions that had already received SUBSCRIBE FIN and were in their tail grace. Fixed: Tail records the end, and both SubscriptionCleanup and the serve loop's tail arm finish an ended subscription when the session dies instead of aborting it, so the outcome no longer depends on which sees the close first (internal_session_end_gives_back_live_and_finishes_ended covers the arm).
@moq/net: removed Broadcast.finish(), Finish, the finished-broadcast guards, and hooks.linger (with its CACHE_WINDOW use there).
moq-ffi: removed MoqBroadcastFinish and MoqBroadcastProducer::finish(). The new MoqMediaCatalogProducer::finish() finishes the catalog. The broadcast stays announced and serving until close().
moq-c: removed moq_publish_finish and moq_publish_finish_close. The new moq_publish_catalog_finish(broadcast) finishes the catalog, mirroring moq_publish_catalog_section. The broadcast stays up until moq_publish_close.
Bindings (py, go, swift, kt, dart, cpp): removed the BroadcastFinish wrappers, their linger helpers, and BroadcastProducer.finish(). CatalogProducer.finish() (Finish() in Go, MediaCatalogProducer::finish() in C++) ends the content. Dart bindings are regenerated.
Interop: every finish publisher (rust, js, python, go, cpp) holds its finished broadcast for a fixed 10s, then closes it.
Docs: doc/concept/moq-lite.md gains the model paragraph. doc/lib/{rs/moq-net,js/net,c,cpp,dart,go,kt,py,swift} are updated.
Stale MIGRATE finish entries are fixed inline (see Impact).
Impact
Public API, all breaking (!):
moq-net: broadcast::Producer::finish() is gone. In the last release it was a deprecated alias for close(), so call close() instead. To end content cleanly, finish each track, keep the producer for as long as late readers should find it, then close it. moq_mux::Linger does this for a hang broadcast. Consumer::supersede, Announcer::superseded, and the Finish type had no release, so they need no migration.
@moq/net: Broadcast.finish() and Finish are gone; they were never published. Close each track cleanly, keep the broadcast as long as you want, then close() it.
moq-ffi and every UniFFI binding: MoqBroadcastFinish / BroadcastFinish and its linger/wait/close are gone, and so is BroadcastProducer.finish(). In the last release finish() was a deprecated close() alias: call close() (end() in Kotlin) there, which typed bindings now enforce at compile time and Python with an AttributeError. To end content first, call finish() on the broadcast's CatalogProducer, keep the producer up for your own retention window, then close it. The binding MIGRATE entries say this.
moq-c: moq_publish_finish and moq_publish_finish_close are gone. In the last release (libmoq) moq_publish_finish(broadcast) was a deprecated alias for moq_publish_close: call moq_publish_close there; the old name now fails to link, so the change is loud. To end content first, call moq_publish_catalog_finish(broadcast), which returns 0 or an error and leaves the handle valid, then moq_publish_close once your retention window passes. The moq-c MIGRATE feat(net)!: remove the deprecated broadcast finish and abort #4152 entry says this.
The moq-dev/moq#5795 and moq-dev/moq#6157 MIGRATE entries that named a finish handle are rewritten. Per moq-dev/moq#6610, full notes are written at the cut, so this Impact list is the migration source.
Wire: none. The lite relay fix changes only when a relay ends a subscription it already saw finish, from a reset to a clean FIN.
Decisions made
A catalog finish replaces the broadcast finish in moq-ffi and moq-c. The quest says to delete moq_publish_finish, but the bindings own the hang catalog, and without a finish call a binding user has no way to end content (a track FIN on the catalog is the model's end of content). Keeping it as moq_publish_finish(broadcast) matched the released close alias's exact signature, so a release caller would compile and silently keep its broadcast up. The maintainer picked a rename:
Keep moq_publish_finish as catalog-only, with a MIGRATE note
Rename it so release callers fail to build ✅
Delete it as the quest says
The C name is moq_publish_catalog_finish, next to moq_publish_catalog_section. Its UniFFI mirror is finish() on the existing catalog handle (MoqMediaCatalogProducer, whose set_section mirrors moq_publish_catalog_section), not a renamed MoqBroadcastProducer::finish_catalog(), so BroadcastProducer.finish() disappears from every binding and release callers of that alias fail too.
The JS catalog keeps its MAX_SAFE_INTEGER max-age. It is not finish bookkeeping: it keeps the sole catalog snapshot replayable for a viewer that arrives after the media retention window. js/publish had no remaining Finish bookkeeping to drop.
Interop publishers use a fixed 10s linger instead of one derived from max-age, matching the epic's "retention is app policy".
The lite-03/04 relay fix is in scope. Without it, a lite-03/04 relay turned a finished track into an abort when its upstream died during the tail grace, which is exactly the property the quest required proving before the delete. lite-03/04 with a graceful close still can't carry the end, because their ACK-based close drain finishes before the relay reads the FIN. The test covers only abort for those versions and says why. They are old drafts, so I did not chase it further.
Checks
cargo test -p moq-net (unit + integration), including relay_upstream_close on every version above
nix develop --command just check: rs, py, js, markdown, gh, quest, and shell pass. check flake fails locally only because the sandbox can't unshare (/proc/self/uid_map), and it cancelled the binding lanes, so I ran those individually: just {go,cpp,kt,dart} check and just obs compile pass. just swift check skips on Linux because there is no toolchain, so CI covers Swift.
nix develop --command just test interop --all: all pass, including finish from all five publishers (rust, python, go, cpp, js) to every reader
just fix hits a compile error in the decode_clock bench that is already on main (crate::Result in rs/moq-mux/benches). This PR does not touch it.
Re-run on 65c82a3 (catalog finish move, tail-arm fix, CodeRabbit's quest wording fix, and merges of main): nix develop --command just check fails only check flake on the sandbox unshare (/proc/self/uid_map); the lanes it cancels pass individually (just rs test-changed, just py test, just {kt,go,cpp, dart} check, just obs compile, quest check, shell). cargo test -p moq-net passes. The new internal_session_end_gives_back_live_and_finishes_ended fails on the old tail arm and passes now. nix develop --command just test interop --all passes. On the intermediate 3be1b5b, rust-swapped -> js timed out (38s of 30s) in 2 of 3 full-matrix runs while passing in 11-12s in 3 of 3 isolated --publishers rust --subscribers js runs. This PR touches neither the Rust CLI publisher nor the browser's tone check, so it looks like a load flake.
Follow-ups
lite-03/04 graceful close drops a pending SUBSCRIBE FIN at a relay (ACK drain closes first). It is now planned as lite-close-fin.
ffi-close listed this quest as a blocker; the merge of main drops that link, since this PR deletes the quest.
The rust-swapped -> js interop round times out under full-matrix load (see Checks); worth a test-flakes quest if it recurs on main.
…n dies
A lite-03 or lite-04 publisher declares no end, so the relay waits out a
tail grace after the subscription's FIN. A session ending during that grace
aborted the track, and a downstream subscriber still behind lost every
group the relay held. The FIN already said the track is over, so finish it.
Adds a relay test proving a finished track reaches existing downstream
subscribers after the upstream session closes or aborts, on lite and
moq-transport.

Finishing a binding broadcast finishes its catalog and leaves it up until
close; interop publishers keep a finished broadcast up for a fixed 10s.
Docs describe the model, and stale MIGRATE finish entries are fixed.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The changes remove broadcast finish handles and max-age-based linger behavior across the core implementation and language APIs. They add catalog-finish methods in several APIs, so content can end while a broadcast remains announced until explicitly closed. Subscription handling and relay tests are updated. Documentation, migration guides, and interop publishers now describe or use the revised lifecycle.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to 3be1b
This change removes the broadcast finished state and adds catalog-level finish APIs. The remaining issues are a harmless redundant finish call during relay subscription cleanup and one stale line in a planning document. Merging carries little risk; both can be fixed as small follow-ups.

The moq-c MIGRATE entry still said moq_publish_finish was removed, but it

moq_publish_finish keeps the released signature of the old moq_publish_close
alias, so a release caller compiled against the catalog-only finish and never
released its broadcast. It is now moq_publish_catalog_finish, mirrored by
MoqMediaCatalogProducer::finish and CatalogProducer.finish in every binding,
and BroadcastProducer.finish is gone, so release callers fail to build.

A lite subscription the publisher already ended still handed its track
back with the session's error when its serve loop saw the session close
before the driver's cleanup, which finishes it. Finish in that arm too,
so the outcome no longer depends on poll order.

The merge dropped the Go time import and the Python _opt_from_us import
along with the finish linger helpers, but main's Fill.MaxDelay needs them.

Update the stale reference to the removed broadcast finish().
This PR removes broadcast::Producer::finish(). Lines 43-44 still say that swapping h.broadcast.close() for a dropped finish() fails the same way. A reader can take this as the removed broadcast method. Rewrite the sentence for the current model. For example, name a dropped last producer in place of close(). Alternatively, remove the sentence.

Merging 65c82a3 with the maintainer's approval, including the catalog-handle finish() naming. The non-Grok review of this head is clean, every finding is fixed or answered, and the pre-land quest check passes against origin/main.
Main removed broadcast::Finish (#6660), so Publication::finish goes too,
along with the finished-prepared admission tests and the follow-up quests'
finish mentions. Main's new TS export tests and the interop finish client
now take Publication fill clones.
