feat(net)!: track demand reports the wanted group, with refresh on join - #5930
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`track::Demand::wanted()` replaces `used`/`unused`: `None` while nobody consumes the track, `Some(n)` while consumers want group `n` or later. `track::Info::refresh` is the ratio of a group's bytes after its first frame to the first frame past which a join asks for the group after the newest. IETF DYNAMIC_GROUPS maps onto `refresh: Some(0)`, a downstream NEW_GROUP_REQUEST counts as a join, and the upstream driver asks when `wanted` passes the largest group. JS, moq-ffi, and the bindings follow. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

moq_track_info gains refresh and refresh_present, and moq_publish_demand_wanted reads the group a demand watcher's subscribers want. The on_demand callback now repeats MOQ_DEMAND_USED whenever that group moves. The C++ docs and MIGRATE.md cover the moq-ffi demand change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The provisional subscription a moq-transport SUBSCRIBE subscribes with joined at the live edge, so an absolute filter was judged under the refresh ratio before its fixed start replaced the range. Bound it to the filter first when the filter resolves without the live edge, in Rust and JS. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughTrack demand now reports the next wanted group instead of only whether subscribers exist. Track refresh metadata controls when a live-edge join requests a later group. The IETF publisher and relay use join and cache state to handle new-group requests. Public APIs, language bindings, consumers, tests, and documentation are updated to use the new demand model. …'s would A fixed start is no implicit join, so its NEW_GROUP_REQUEST went unheard. Judge it like an update's: past a group the track holds, a join under the refresh ratio. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A datagram past the newest group already took the sequence after it, so asking for latest + 1 named a written sequence and the refresh never fired. Ask for one past max_sequence instead, in Rust and JS. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A join stored the next free sequence as a number, so a datagram taking it before the publisher reacted left the ask on a written sequence and the refresh was lost. A join now only marks a refresh pending, and wanted reads it as the namespace's next free sequence until a group lands there. Writes wake the demand watchers while one is pending. Mirrored in JS. live-edge join requests a new group only when the newest group exceeds the
configured ratio, not on every join.
Review comments at @rs/moq-c/MIGRATE.md:
- Around line 13-17: Update the migration snippet’s group-start condition to
handle the no-group-yet case: track whether a group has been written and start
the first wanted group when none exists, even if its sequence is 0. Preserve the
comparison against the largest written group for subsequent groups.
Review comments at @rs/moq-net/benches/refresh.rs:
- Line 45: Update the refresh benchmark around refreshable(track) so each timed
interval measures only the join and demand check, excluding group creation and
publishing. Prepare the next group outside the timed interval, using iter_custom
if needed, while preserving comparisons across track and audience counts.

… refresh bench The JS note says a join asks for a group only over the ratio, and the C snippet starts the first group before any is written. The refresh bench writes each answering group outside the timed section. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Keeps both Unreleased MIGRATE entries in js/net and rs/moq-net (this PR's largest() note and #5930's track demand note). Boxes moq-mux's new SiState::Active reader: the larger track::Ordered tripped clippy's large_enum_variant, as moq-hls already boxes its live reader. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
#5930 moved Used/Unused to GroupDemand; the package doc still listed them on TrackDemand. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
--epoch is gone (moq-dev#5967), so its refusal of --stats goes with it; the stats report asks Demand::wanted (moq-dev#5930) whether anyone reads it. Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
